The yankees have always been more popular than the mets even back in the 80s, I tend to notice that most mets fans live in queens or brooklyn, while most yankee fans live in manhattan/bronx.
@DarkosApprentice I agree with how you base Mets/Yankees fans from different boroughs. I grew up the only Mets fan on my block in the Bronx but you'll still see them in the Bronx although its nothing like the amount of Yankees fans there. I honestly can say living there, I didnt see any yankee fans boasting yankee pride til post 96' After that I noticed people in my neighborhood putting yankee banners, flags, and sticker decals on windows, cars, stores, and other small businesses in the area.
I really miss all the swagger, balls and attitude this team had. We need to develop another team like this. Even though Mike Pelfrey is not the best pitcher we have, he shows that grit that this team needs. He is not afraid to be confrontational with opposing players. I thought we had that in Mike Piazza until he showed no balls in the Roger Clemons incident. I'm not saying we need a brawling team but we do need a team with balls, who are not afraid to play tough and take out anyone in their way
Oh man did that bring back memories, my dad God rest his soul was the hardest hard core Mets fan there ever lived, he knew more about baseball then any other man I knew, BOO FOR THE YANKEES, LET'S GO METS!!!
No one knows who would of won the game if Buckner makes the play. The biggest misconception of that play is the Mets would of lost if Buckner makes the play. Incorrect the score would of been tied and gone to further extra innings. And the Sox have than just Buckner to blame. They had two with no one and couldnt get the job done.
@zicon6 1. I KNOW Pagan is an outfielder...I watch the games, thank you
2. Where'd you hear that, just checked the news online, can't find a single thing even saying he's thinking of leaving the Mets, let alone that he's going to the Yanks...source?
The memories from this magical season will be with me FOREVER!! I am from St. Louis...born and raised in Cardinals country and since June 15, 1983 I have been a DIE HARD Mets fan! Just ask my daughter SHEA!!!!! A true fan is a fan that takes the good with the bad! Omar's gone, Jerry's gone! LET'S DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YA GOTTA BELIEVE!!
I don't care what ANYONE says, I enter every season thinking it's going to be the year...even if we're in the umps b June, damnit, they may be bums but THEY'RE OUR BUMS!
Mets fans love their team a HELL of a lot more than cranky Yankee fans!
And unlike Phillie fans, they can actually form a whole sentence without cursing!
Go on, roast me for that, I don't care...I live in California and have never even BEEN to NYC (want to move there) but I've loved them my whole life!
@44032 all I can recognize other than Mayor Koch are Howard Stern and Tony Bennett. I'll have to dig around in my mothers basement and see if I can find the VHS from back in the day!
Actually, this song was played regularly (at Shea and on radio and tv, too, I think) in either 1981 or 1982. I remember for sure; Hubie Brooks was still on the team. I always liked it. I don't even recally hearing it after the early 80s. But the video is a good one, and obviously this was made during or after the '86 season (being that Lee Mazzilli is wearing #13 in the video). I loved the song. Great video, too, but, as I mentioned, the SONG actually debuted in '81 or '82, not '86.
i remember this from back in 86 and i still get all choked up and fired up seeing this all these years later they should do a remake with the new regime LETS GO METS!!!!
@xhemexx People always say that, but even without Buckner's error the game would have headed to the 11th inning tied and with all the momentum on the Mets side. The game was already tied; it's not like if Buckner makes the play the game is over.
@Weirsy06 The Mets had alreayd tied the game up on Stanley's wild pitch. And Mookie says that he would have beaten Buckner to the bag even if he'd fielded the ball. Look at the video: he could be right.
@Weirsy06 I don't think Buckner was beating Mookie to the bag anyway. Not a chance. If it didn't go through his legs, at least he would have saved the run from scoring, but the inning would have continued with first and third and the game tied.
This has got to be the worst God-awful-est theme song and video ever! What a cheesy take-off of the Stupor-bowl shuffle! And Gary Carter looked like a homo!
@JR08620 Not gonna lie, they're looking pretty decent right now. I live in Philly (sucks I know) and my friend, who is a HUGE Phillies fan flat out said "Shit man, I'm actually scared of the Mets this year". All I can say is, we'll see. Also, how about this Ike Davis character, good or what?!
@JR08620- The wilpons and omar suck balls...I want to the Mets vs. Yanks in the world series! Im a yanks fan but I feel for the underdog at times...Baseball is all about money..just like how you have players on the DL over a dam broken nail,lol....
Just bring back the days when Buddy Harrelson was playing short...now THOSE were the days! I remember all too well when my parents took me & a then-boyfriend to Shea a few weeks before my folks moved overseas in 1971. I still have the Mets logo cups that I bought that evening..I think I'll be buried holding one of those cups!
Oh sure, all the fun stuff happened after I moved out of New Jersey in '84! Oh well....but I watched every single game on TV & adjusted my work schedule around every playoff & championship game. Great to see Joe Piscopo here-he sat 8 rows behind me when I was at a game Memorial Day weekend '82

i am a mets fan. i dont know why. they are the most depressing team to watch. BUT!,, this video made me less depressed. now i will watch them loose again today! lets go mets :(
@nealflex They're depressing to watch because players that they push and think are good i.e David Wright and Jose Reyes (David in particular) who possesses a swing that rivals one of a little leaguer, and mean while a player like Mike Jacobs, who's REALLY tremendous but lacks the sexy stats, gets look down upon, just really sad.
us true met fans arent fazed by this season or any season like it. We were still better then the days of Anthony Young and being the worst team in baseball...you're not a true fan unless you accept the fact that they can have the best talent in the world yet its management and executives who are the dead weight on the team making bad decision...That's what it is in this team...the management has ALWAYS sucked...I'm use to it, it doesnt faze me...

Hmmm...... Well the Mets from what I know now since Im a big fan and I was born in the 90's, I know 1986 was like the greatest year for Mets fans haha Mets n Yankees in Yanks Stadium they won the o um anyway(lol) we had our down points but we're still good I mean we suck sometimes I hav 2 say but I mean its not like the Yankees didnt either I mean they always brag about the World Series but how many times have the Mets won games and how many times have they beaten the Yankees ? I would love to find out what group of musicians and singer did the music to this video. It sounds very mid-80s with the melodic vocals and synthesizers.
Yeah, tat trade wouldn't work; I think we'll be OK with Johan, Maine ad Pelfrey, and Livan's not doing too badly, not spectacular but at least a .500 pitcher. We need a good 4th pitcher, so I say either promote a AAA prosepct and see how he does, trade for a mid-level pitcher, or give Oliver Perez one more VERY BRIEF chance- 3 games, if he doesn't perform.........
And anyway, I like Murphy a lot- good .285 or so hitter, good glove at 1B, and young- he has potential, Delgado's almot done....
Wilpon needs to sell the team.

And that comes in part from the manager...
Dump Jerry Manuel!
Wright, Reyes, Pagan, Thole, Ike...good infield!
Santana, Niese, Dickey, Pelfrey...good rotation!
Pagan's been anohter great surprise!
Feliciano has carried the load out of the bullpen!
But aside from them--we CAN do this, I still believe this team can at least contend, but it needs another starter, another reliever...and Maneul GONE!

The '86 Mets were the Bad Boys and Pranksters of baseball. Everyone who wasn't a Met fan HATED them with a passion.
But, just like the title of a book written about the '86 Series... The Bad Guys Won.
Go Mets.

I would love to find out what group of musicians and singer did the music to this video. It sounds very mid-80s with the melodic vocals and synthesizers.

No way; we're too banged up to trade, nobody would want to trade with us, because anyone we'd part with is on the disabled list.
Besides, I REALLY like Daniel Murphy at first base. Young, he has a good swing, is already a solid .280+ slap hitter, and is decent defending.
Young, already solid, and with the potential to develop, I like Murphy a lot.
If they keep Ramon Martinez at second and Murphy at 1st-
Wright, Reyes, Martinez, Murphy- all young and talented, improving together.....

Also read "If at First" by Keith Hernandez. It chronicles the 85 season. Leaves out the coke and hookers part, but good for nostalgic reasons.

Let's not forget that he made Dave Kingman lose his position at first base. I'm still P.O.d about that more than 25 years later
