Thank you for sharing this. I am starting to learn more about my heritage. My great grandma practice these rituals. I always wanted to understand but our problem is we both speak a different language. Regardless the language barrier I still try to understand it when I am with her.
An example of a decolonised African mind. Interestingly 98% of Africans worldwide detest their forefathers and their beliefs. That is the legacy of being the colonized and not the colonizer
but i really Love Vodun, Hoodoo, Santeria etc...i find it very intresting, but since i have been training myself in Witchcraft, i don't really know how to start? any ideas?
I know this is late.. but start looking for Ifa, Yoruba religion, also look at the Metu Neter which is the Egyptian equivalent to the Orisha's or Ifa. I have looked into many of these spiritual paths... being a witch is just a different form. So master your craft.... then you will find the similarities.
Traditional practices are frowned upon , but americans have taken them up as a way to connect to a culture that has been lost to them . the problem with this is that it clashes with the current modern practices in nigeria as christainity and islam are the main religions.. it is not going to change despite the outside interest..
if you look at the history of buddhism when it came to america and how it was changed by americans...it has become more like us and less like the Japanese....it is inevitible. we will make the religion in our image.
I am very interested in this.I am currently learning more about traditional practices in europe, but it does not feel fully me. As a mixed African/European - American (commonly mistaken for a latino...), I really don't know what path to follow. My family history is very fragmented to where I do not know my grandparents, let alone older ancestors. Any advice? Where can I learn about path you follow?
You need to find a God parent that you can build a close relationship with. This is my religion and everyone has a God parent. My head is covered by shango
I love what you have done... I am following that of Lucumi, but it is all the same.. People who put out the negativity needs to stop.. That is how Christianity6 has done not only other religions but within itself.. Meferefun Iya!!
All over the world believers have had to face the economic stranglehold that the major religions have on them. In Nigeria i witnessed people who left the religion in order to get jobs because Christians/Muslims would not hire traditionalists. My own Oluwo had to hide his Ifa name in order to attend a Christian school. Until the persecution of traditional religions of all sorts, stops, all over the world, we will not have peace. We must allow others the freedom of religion that we also seek.
Did you also feel that some nigerians resented you being an american that sought to embrace a culture they saw as "theirs?" (I was in nigeria; i didn't consider the people to be that friendly...)
I met Chief Atanda in Lagos and was with priests and priestesses of HATTAF or family members. people were very friendly. we had escorts at all times since it is a very poor country and there is the possibility of pick pockets, etc. but overall people waved to us and seemed eager to meet us. i am looking forward to going back in August to be initiated to Ifa.
the people of africa, where made to turn away from ifa.many of then refuse to give up there tradition, and became slaves, but how ever they took ifa as a secret practise.and did it at night,as well as gave the orisa, christians names.the christian told them that asu was the devil, and all other lies
I love what you do Yeye Osun. I have been to Oshogbo myself and the experience going through the Osun grove was deep. I love all my Yoruba brothers and sisters. May our ancestors teach us to unite and love one another more no matter where we are on this planet. Ase
Catholicism is not practiced or an intergral part of the rituals of Santeria. The syncretism occured as a tool for survival.
These statements are generally made by so called "purists" who look to attack Santeria since it is the most practiced African diaspora religion in the US.
Why are you so touchy! Why do you assume you are being attacked? People like you have been the most aggressive in approaching me. They don't seek communication....where is the love.
Perhaps knightblnc isn't touchy at all but simply responding to your incorrect remark. Communication is offered by his correcting your incorrect statement. Lukumi religion has NOTHING to do with Catholic theology or ritual practice. Respectfully posted.
Lukumi and Santeria are different in the sense that Lukumi does not condone the use of saints. At least in my house. We don't call Sango "Santa Barbara" and so on and so on. It is 2007 and it's time to get educated. We are no longer in slavery and we no longer have to hide behind saints.
May our Iya Oshun keep you always blessed for sharing the truth of our beautiful religion with the world. For the world has a misconception that must be fixed!
