My two aunts had Parkinsons. Those movements are not made up! Michael J. Fox is a brave man and it is time for us to proceed with with stem cell research - think about it - if we find a cure for Parkinsons (a disease of the brain), we will also find a cure for Alzheimers and Mad Cow disease. People - Educate yourselves. Don't rely on stupid comments of people not in the know. You Go Michael - I'm behind you all the way. May G-d bless your soul.
People also do not understand that not ALL stem cell research is embryonic. (By the way, the reason not much has been found is because a CERTAIN University had all the "legal" stem cells and is charging an arm and a leg for anyone to do research on them.) Scientists are now excited about a new way of getting cells. It is where you take ONE CELL from a blastocyst. Just one cell, and they can propigate more from that. The baby (as far as they can tell) has no adverse effects or disabilities.
JoeeBlogs, right on! Not one cure or aide from embryonic stem cells, it's a pipedream, yet many cures using adult stem cells. Whano, life begins at heartbeat? That's not only ARBITRARY and illogical, it's unscientific!
Tell us, what has embryonic stem cell research done? Besides the moral issues of killing human life, it is pointless to pour money into a science that shows no promise, but actually has been shown to cause harm, like tumors. Adult stem cells are the way to go!
How are you qualified at all to claim that embryonic stem cell research "shows no promise?!" I research adult stem cell development, and these are two separate fields with distinct potentials to cure disease.
Go hell nazist american! What is kill a human life for you? A Embrionic stem cell (a "pseudo life") research ia a murder for you, and what you do in Iraq and afeganistan, what is? A MURDER TOO!
I prefer save a REAL LIFE and kill a "MAYBE LIFE". If you don´t, I´m sorry....
In the middle ages the FLU was FATAL, the world was FLAT (or so most religious authorities thought). God puts us on this earth with challenges to solve with the gifts he gave us and our ability to reason is the greatest one of those. Voting No on Missouri Amedment2 would be like curing a headache with blood letting.
Our government gives up our children's lives everyday through war. Parents are providing, nurturing and protecting those lives and raising them to be moralistic, contributing human beings that that can be taken from us at any time over political conflicts. Regular, hard working Americans are all dispensible to our government. Why should they care to cure the sick when there are plenty of future human beings to use at their will.
Stem cell research issues may not directly affect you now, but given time all people will find they know a loved one or friend who will need this research in order to survive. How do people think they found a cure for Polio, Small Pox, Rubella, Mumps..ect.. " Research " only then they used live animals and not just stem cells. Are you thankful we have those cures?? You bet your sweet ass you are!!!
To all the the conservatives who have used the "not with my tax dollars" argument, regarding the funding of stem cell research: I don't want to fund the war in Iraq. Can I opt out?
You know what I really hate? people talking about something they know nothing about. Please, first RESEARCH from OBJECTIVE sources and THEN talk. Until then, just shut up.
If God could choose stem-cell research or no stem-cell research, he would choose the first. Didn't Jesus ask us to help those who need it? There have been breakthroughts that don't require living embryonic cells so if everyone could put their prejudices aside and just help the situation. THAT is what God would want.
Are you really this uninformed?? Stem cell research is LEGAL in the US also! The only restriction is on government funding. Private companies can put all the money they want into it. And in case you haven't noticed, it is almost always the private sector that developes cures and makes medical advancements. Do some research of you own next time so you dont make such an ass of yourself.
All ya "christians" walking around and boasting about how you love Jesus, but the real question is does Jesus love you? Believe what you want, but do not mess with progress and do not force your belive system onto others. Worry about your soul and salvation, as for me..I would sell my soul to the devil to see my beloved son walk again. But sadly because of people like you my son is in a prison of paralysis, with no hope for parole.
Why can't people understand that stem cell research has nothing to do with encouraging abortion? Life begins when there's heart beat and I don't recall abortion being done that late in the pregnancy
It is part of the same industry - creating life to be destroyed to line people's pockets. That's what this is really about - abortion isn't about "women's rights" - it is about cash. Same for embryonic stem cell research which has yielded no real results...the dark side of capitalism.
Life needs to be nurtured, touched, cared for or it will die. An embyro, grown without human emotional contact, kept alive through scientific methods has not been created as a human being but simply a way to possibly save millions of loved, nurtured beings.
The most recent literature on this issue shows embryonic stem cells have not yielded any statistically significant treatments. Whilst there are at least 40 current treatments for diseases using adult stem cells, there isn't a single successful treatment that uses ES cell.
As far as I can see, adult stem cells are the way forward - not yet more money pumped into ES Cell research which hasn't yielded a single cure.
You're repeating talking points from Rush Lintbah and the Republicant party.
Should we do away with invitro fertilization now too, because that results in the discarding of embryos? Supporters of Embryonic Stem Cell research would also provide strict rules to prevent any misuse and require written consent from donors.
I just wrote this and now realized how long it was. So, it comes in installments...
The very simple fact is that the majority of the public (yes, Christians) are very misinformed, and, understandably so, when you consider that the bulk of their information requires no critical thought and is straight from the mouth of James Dobson or that man standing behind his wooden pulpit. The issue regarding stem cells and Christianity is far more complex, from my point of view, than this single topic...
Rush Limbaugh is out there saying right now that Michael J Fox is lieing abaout how bad his diease really is and is just overplaying it for political reasons.
George W. Bush and his Republican congress were the first to authorize funding for any kind of stem cell research, and funding has increased every year of his tenure. He is even funding fetal stem cell research with pre-existing strains of fetal stem cells. Though I am sorry for his illness, Michael J. Fox is an actor with a political agenda. His recent commercial has nothing to do with advancing a cure for Parkinson's or any other disease.
has anyone else noticed that there has been really no progress what so ever with embryonic stem cells? anything that looks even remotely promising has come from adult stem cells, and even they are only to the point where it's like covering your body in leeches to get rid of the flu.
Those are fanastic books. Before reading that, I was brought up in a christian home but starting to have doubts, after reading that I became an atheist.. I was fed all these lies, and never realized it. PLEASE read these books
In regards to Stem Cell research, wasn't Christopher Reeves deeply involved in this research? I am no expert on it at all. It just seems that the idea in working with stem cells is to help human life. It is poorly educated in my view however. Miss information about this doesn't help anyone. Need more input.
You are allowed your oppinion. She is allowed hers. In America you then VOTE for those that will support your ideals in a majority rules sort of way. If you dont like something...vote for the people you think will change it. If you do then vote for the supporters of it. I think we ALL need to take a breath and love each other more than our opinions.
I am part of an experimental treatment using stem cells. The alternative treatment was certain death in about two years. Maybe this "brain trust" will cure me, but I am banking on the stem cells.
Of course you're right. Embryonic Stem Cell Research ONLY produces cancer cells. If you were actually doing Embryonic Stem Cell Research, you probably wouldn't be commenting on a video on Youtube. Here is a fact: Embryonic Stem Cells are taken from zygotes that were fertilized via in vitro fertilization. Normally, the zygotes are kept for a few years and then discarded if the patient has no need for them.
May all of you morons that oppose stem cell research develop a neurological disease or at least your children, then come back and give your opinion once you've watched and cared for a loved one while they waste away and suffer.Fuck! Americans have to be some of the most ignorant people on the earth!
The medieval people of USA, Halleluja. People are suffering, help them now. Religious faith are destroying this world. Use your brains. Your ignorance is amazing. There is no God.
It doesn't matter that you don't believe in God, He still believes in you. Ruminate on this, Grasshopper: if I believe in God and die to find he doesn't exist, is that worse than not believing and dying to find he does?
I know this is a really stupid question, but since our country, the USA, is being run by Middle Ages sort of people, why can't another cpuntry accomplish this stem cell research? We aren't at the top of the world statistically as far as turning out scientists anymore.
You would think that if any of them knew any vets coming home fucked up from the war that they would be the first to jump at the chance to make a vet's life better.
Just give us a couple of bombs worth...throw us a bone...at least pretend to care...
Are you all retarded. Do any of you know what you are talking about. NO! Embryonic stemcells only produce cancer cells in all the research. I know I have done it, now adult stemcell research on the other hand is producing nice results in lab tests.
Thank you PillDoc98, I am a cancer survivor who went through a stem cell transplant. Rather than using the stem cells I saved from my child's umbilical cord, they used my own stem cells saying they're (the saved umbilical cord stem cells) pretty much "useless". Those who want support this research, may do so on their own dime. The Govt. doesn't need to do it. It's not illegal, do it yourself!
Great point, Embryonic stem cells have use. Adult stem cells are the way to go. Funny how the same people who attack the drug companies are the same ones screaming for this huge waste of money, time and life! Morons!
um. clearly you're not a scientist. stem cell research is at the beginning of its work. It has a lot of potential to cure diseases because embryonic stem cells are more easily manipulated into a wide variety of cells. Promising research abounds, from singapore, to Israel, to California. Adult stem cell research may also be beneficial, but possibly more limited in its benefits.
To see how much the government, past and present, are getting away with, go see the new m3xlc4n videos: The Aaron Russo Interview (America - Freedom to Fascism). Real information. Great opinion and solutions. A great Wake up call. Be a good youtuber, pass it on please.
Pro-lofers are real nuts...They believe in life from conception to birth...after that they don't give a shit what happens to you...They are the lowest of the low !!!
Typical conservative bullshit. Don't give a shit about the suffering of billions who are alive, but fight to high hell for non-persons. Wizzid, I contribute to Cancer research, so yes, I support stem cell research personally. And I guarantee that I pay a hell of a lot more in taxes than you do. Quit crying, you big baby.
There is no God, there is only us. Reading through these posts I am more sure than ever of one fact, we are fucked. You are a bunch of ignorant sheep.
Wrong. Liberalism is the philosophy that we are all stronger when we come together to work for very basic things that benefit all: education, equality, environment, health care.
I can understand the side of the republicans as using aborted fetuses as a kind of stem cell factory, it seems quite disgusting when you think about it, I'm not drawing moral conclusions, but the Romans sacked the Carthagians because they regularly sacrificed their own children to the gods. Even Barabaric Rome saw how disgusting that was. So they wiped them out.
Hey libs - you're not convincing conservatives of their "flaws" by spouting out lies. You don't tell US what we believe - we know it far better than you do. So cut the crap about masturbation being murder and all that nonsense. Your type has no chance of winning a true debate.
Conservatives say they care so much for human life -- HAH! That concern ends when a baby is born. Thousands of innocent Iraqi babies have been slaughtered because of the lying neocon and their rightwing supporters and they couldn't give a crap. Your hypocrisy is disgusting.
conservatives never complain about fertility treatments... in which millions of unborn fetuses are lost. doesn't anyone realize how ridiculous the phrase "kill the unborn" sounds? why do conservatives care so much about the unborn and not about the living? and don't even get me started on the undead....
People who go to extraodinary lengths to have children should consider adoption. There are lots of children, worldwide, who need parents. But, then again, fertility treatments are "ME" oriented rather than focused on that young life. Isn't that so?
even if you feel they should adopt, it isn't gov't's job to tell them that. it's their choice. i agree with nisleib, that the death penalty and torture situations are disgusting for christians. i don't understand how forcing people to be good (making immoral illegal) does anyone any good. all it does is turn people away from christ.
Your reply was realy off base! 1st, I never said they "should" adopt, merely consider it. And I never implied that the government should tell them what to do. That's a matter of conscience. My conscience, however, is OK with executing a murderer. I take it you feel that murder, rape, or assault should not be illegal because "making immoral illegal" "turns people away from Christ." That is a really weird anarchist [not to be confused with anti-Christ] point of view.
The irony is that most of these right wing wack jobs who think stem cell research is murder love the death penalty.
America has the most un-Chritian Christians in the whole world. They are like the Taliban of Chritianity. The next thing you know the will be stoning people in the streets for eating shellfish.
continued... Not to mention the fact that they love war and are pro-torture. I don't know who Jesus would bomb if he came back tomorrow but I would bet one of his first targets would be the 700 club.
You fools don't follow the teachings of Jesus. Jesus cared about helping the poor and healing the sick. You care about tax cuts and the ability to torture people who don't believe in Jesus.
I am a conservitive who has complained about fertility treatments casual use of human life. I is not a popular stand on an issue. I don't want to deprive anybody of being a parent, but this proceedure has alot of moral flaws in it. I also love the living. and I love you.
Apart from "playing God" with the unborn by some, the unborn also have no way of representing themselves - that is why conservatives care so much. The undead do not factor into this equation at all (whatever is meant by undead), however, it is the brain-dead people without a concious that are the problem.
So, you suport stem cell research? Cool, how much money have you contributed? If you haven't, then why are you wanting to force me to contribute with my tax money? It is perfectly legal for you to contribute to fetal stem cell research YOUR hard earned money, just don't try to force it out of people who find it morally objectionable.
But you don't find allowing billions to die horribly of diseases morally objectionable, a cluster of unborn cells are more important, what the hell is wrong with you? You are sick.
If a human is hurt lying in a building thats on fire & there are a jars of stem cells sitting across the room and you could only save one, who are you going to rescue?
I am an idiot? You and the brain dead Christian Zombies are the idiots. Two cells in a peitri dish is not a human being. You think using eggs from fertility clinics to do research is evil even though those eggs would be discarded if they weren't used.
That is your opinion based upon religious teachings that don't even reflect the actual teachings of the religious leader you purport to be following. Jesus never said abortion is wrong. The bible NEVER explicitly states that abortion is wrong. Jesus did have very strong feelings about helping the poor and healing the sick, not that it matters to American Christians.
I don't remember abortion being mentioned anywhere in history books before Roe v Wade...does that mean in didn't exist during the time of Christ and therefore it is not a sin????maybe the same would be true for shooting someone with a gun..afterall guns were not around in the time of Jesus, so killing with it must not be a sin...great logic nisleib.NOT
Duh....sperm not meet egg, no fertilization therefore no embryo (ie child), same thing with an egg and no sperm....get the difference? An egg must be fertilized to get an embryo (or cloned in the case of the embryonic stem cell research)
Mr. Fox has some gall doing a political commercial for a candidtae in a distrct he does not live in. His assertions are wrong and,...isn't he a Canadian?!
Your post seems to suggest that he shouldn't speak his mind on issues that do not involve him directly. What an evolved concept. Taken to its logical conclusion: strait people wouldn't have any say over how gay people conduct thier lives, men would have no say over what women do with their bodies, and the US wouldn't be involved in Iraq. I love it! You're a genius!
What about all the babies that are stillborn or miscarried? Is it wrong then to use the stemcells? A good friend of mine was battleing lymphoma that started during her pregnancy. Saddly she lost the baby. He was stillborn at 27 weeks. They were able to use his stemcells for a transplant for his mom. She would have never wished for this, but because of this little angel she was able to get a second chance at life and is now in remission.
If the baby miscarries or is stillborn, what good are the stemcells anyway? They obviously didn't do their job.
I find it quite convenient that your friends child was stillborn right when she needed the stemcells AND the fact that they WORKED and that everybody was impeccably READY for the proceedure...
If they worked for her, they should have worked for the baby.
Your friend made one hell of a decision. The fact that she feels the need to lie about it is proof it was an immoral one.
There is no problem using stem cells from a stillborn or miscarried child. The issue we have with stem cells is destroying life to get them. I am happy to fund adult stem cells.
No we should not use stillborn children or embryonic stem cell/cloning. It would be like using the Nazi research on live jews, gypsies and handicapped during ww2. We did the ethical thing when this research was found. We destroyed it. What makes Mike Fox's life more important than an unborn child...Hell, why don't we just kill the old and use some of their organs for the younger or richer people of America...it is the same thing ethically as what is being proposed.
your the dumbass. A fertilized embryo is a baby. So Stem cell research that uses embryos kill babies!! Get that through you thick liberal baby killing skull!!
Numbers 5:27 describes the God-mandated abortion of an adulterously conceived baby. According to the Bible, which you either believe is all right or all wrong, God aborts babies.
If Bush's science and political advisors had a freakin' clue, the entire Republican party and the moral majority could have their cake and eat it too! Instead, both the science and political advisors appear they're too stupid, and the debate rages on, quite needlessly.
I'm a huge fan of Michael, so don't get me wrong. The issue here that we do have the ability to grow stem cells WITHOUT using human embryos. My point is that this technology, created in the last year or so, renders the political argument about whether or not to use stem cells meaningless. YES to stem cells. NO to stem cells from human embryos.
You want misleading? I'll give you this: The whole argument is whether the US GOVERNMENT should fund this research. PERIOD. Your tax dollars. Private firms will continue to do this important research, and will likely be much more succesful than the GOVERNMENT could ever be. The private sector is where the best & brightest people are in this country, not the government. It's the far left that needs to wake up on this one.
Any cell on your body with a nucleus is life by this definition. That's why I say a little prayer every time I take a dump for all those millions of babies being flushed.
A few died to research today so that tomorrow 10,000 lives are saved with that same research.
Without research like this, the prospects for our children's future is no brighter then our own.
Even if it were illegal, there's so much to be gained that research will never stop until it's completed. And the complaints of a few will be drowned out by the cheering of millions of healthy individuals.
It is essential that the research remains legal so it can be monitored and held to a standard.
Right on. People don't know much about stem cells unfortunately. We need all different kinds of stem cells as they all work differently in different situations.
The difference between Michael J Fox and a foetus is that a foetus doesn't have a personality, it's nothing you'll miss, so why can't something you never knew save a person you do know? A foetus doesn't mean anything to me since it doesn't have a personality, it's like killing a deer to prevent you from starving.
If you died, I wouldn't miss you either. So going by your amazing logic, it is OK for me to hire a hitman and kill you. After all, it doesn't affect me.
Obviously you know nothing about a fetus. If you would have personally sought information, you would have been able to spell fetus. Instead you appear to have been dictated to by a liberal what to think about unborn children.
Wow, that's deep. Hitler and the Nazi's used the same rationalizations. And they did make many medical advancements that perhaps we otherwise wouldn't have made. It's still sick and wrong though.
i hope Micheal J Fox gets better. However to hope he gets better by killing others is just rediculous. Stem cell embryos kill babies. Use other stem cells only
the embryoes that would be used are going to be discarded otherwise. The only consistent opposition to stem cell research is to also oppose in vitro fertilization.
One more thing. Since abortion and embryonic stem cell research kill human beings and is an immoral act then can't we say the sam about artificial insemination? One viable embryo out of a petrie dish of 20,000 is harvested while the other 19,999 are destroyed.
I'll bet Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Laura and James Dobson forgot to mention that. They were more than likely too busy condemning Mark Foley's conduct with the pages
"Adult stem cells show far more prospect than embryonic stem cells, and their propagation does not cause the destruction of life."
If that's the case then WHY are scientists b othering with embryos? Personally I think my fellow christians are being manipulated by this psuedo-political issue(LIKE ABORTION) manufactured by Karl Rove to get them to vote republican.
I don't know, ask the scientist, maybe Dr. Hollands in Canada who said: "embryonic stem cells have yet to be used to treat any form of disease." Yet adult stems cells have.
I am sorry but what do you mean by psuedo-political issue like abortion? Do you relieze that since abortion was legalized over 30 million americans have been aborted? (thats a low estimate from CDC)Do you understand how few were actually for cases of rape, incest or health of baby or mother?
But what about Bush & Co. hollering about abortion AND DOING NOTHING ABOUT IT? Come on, they've had the majority in congress and The White House since 2001 and Karl Rove, a political genius. They haven't done squat. YOU ARE BEING LIED TO BY THESE CLOWNS.
I love that christians wont be for this, but you know, lets wait until our babies grow up and fight a fake war. Abort them before theyre thirty anyway.
Has anyone even considered the fact that several endocannabinoids, including anandamide have been found to drastically slow the progression of these debilitating diseases (Such as Parkinson's, Huntington's, Alzheimer's)...and the FDA says marijuana has no medical applications.

Regular, hard working Americans are all dispensible to our government. Why should they care to cure the sick when there are plenty of future human beings to use at their will.

How do people think they found a cure for Polio, Small Pox, Rubella, Mumps..ect.. " Research " only then they used live animals and not just stem cells. Are you thankful we have those cures??

Why can't people understand that stem cell research has nothing to do with encouraging abortion? Life begins when there's heart beat and I don't recall abortion being done that late in the pregnancy
whano123 5 years ago
It is part of the same industry - creating life to be destroyed to line people's pockets. That's what this is really about - abortion isn't about "women's rights" - it is about cash. Same for embryonic stem cell research which has yielded no real results...the dark side of capitalism.

As a student Doctor whose studied this issue:
The most recent literature on this issue shows embryonic stem cells have not yielded any statistically significant treatments. Whilst there are at least 40 current treatments for diseases using adult stem cells, there isn't a single successful treatment that uses ES cell.
As far as I can see, adult stem cells are the way forward - not yet more money pumped into ES Cell research which hasn't yielded a single cure.

The issue regarding stem cells and Christianity is far more complex, from my point of view, than this single topic...

phatty82 5 years ago
People who go to extraodinary lengths to have children should consider adoption. There are lots of children, worldwide, who need parents. But, then again, fertility treatments are "ME" oriented rather than focused on that young life. Isn't that so?
Wizzid 5 years ago
even if you feel they should adopt, it isn't gov't's job to tell them that. it's their choice. i agree with nisleib, that the death penalty and torture situations are disgusting for christians. i don't understand how forcing people to be good (making immoral illegal) does anyone any good. all it does is turn people away from christ.
phatty82 5 years ago
Your reply was realy off base! 1st, I never said they "should" adopt, merely consider it. And I never implied that the government should tell them what to do. That's a matter of conscience. My conscience, however, is OK with executing a murderer. I take it you feel that murder, rape, or assault should not be illegal because "making immoral illegal" "turns people away from Christ." That is a really weird anarchist [not to be confused with anti-Christ] point of view.
Wizzid 5 years ago
The irony is that most of these right wing wack jobs who think stem cell research is murder love the death penalty.

Apart from "playing God" with the unborn by some, the unborn also have no way of representing themselves - that is why conservatives care so much. She would have never wished for this, but because of this little angel she was able to get a second chance at life and is now in remission.

this brings up a great point--we shouldn't count life before it hatches... to be entirely crude.
phatty82 5 years ago
If the baby miscarries or is stillborn, what good are the stemcells anyway? They obviously didn't do their job.
I find it quite convenient that your friends child was stillborn right when she needed the stemcells AND the fact that they WORKED and that everybody was impeccably READY for the proceedure...
If they worked for her, they should have worked for the baby.
Your friend made one hell of a decision. The fact that she feels the need to lie about it is proof it was an immoral one.

Even if it were illegal, there's so much to be gained that research will never stop until it's completed. And the complaints of a few will be drowned out by the cheering of millions of healthy individuals.
It is essential that the research remains legal so it can be monitored and held to a standard.
