Anyone else think this was the best song on 'Enemy'? Not after the first listen maybe, but it has more replay value than basically anything else on that disc.
Great song, makes you wonder that, despite Cuba being paradise and how great people view Castro, why they wanted to leave Cuba and go to the USA in the first place. Must have been bad...
@stereomad new account btw. I was actually asking why they left Cuba in the first place? Still, great song and, for the love of god, dont think im pro-america
@stereomad, if it was a pro cuba song, why did they hesitate to play it? i think it's merely critical towards fidel castro, who builded a 'revolution', but didn't care about children ('sitting in a rocking chair'). to me the phrase 'the devils playground' is irony, just like former sovjet poets would use irony to prevent being arrested.
it's not pro-americn either, but the people escaping cuba did that because of their desire to be free, to built a future. you can't blame america for that.
@lejazzetmoi Thats fucking silly. This is a pro-Castro, PRO-CUBA song.
They aren't being "ironic" when they refer to America as the Devils playground, it is. It does the most evil things in the world everyday. People aren't "free" in America.
@lejazzetmoi America is the devil's playground because it is the place of the most powerful capitalist class, the capitalists that control the worlds' economy and ruin it. I live in Detroit, i've seen what the banks have done to my city. They're waging a all out war to the death with the workers, and they have the heavy firepower. Also, they murder people all around the world to ensure they have increased profits and control. The USA is scary.
guess you're right when saying the 'devil's pl.gr.' phrase isn't irony, because from cuba's view it is.
did you see this dvd? unfort. can't upload b/c dvd is encrypted. james said that initially he didn't want to play baby elian, so to me it's clear it's not a pro cuba song. also the encounter w/ f.castro seemed quite uncomfortable.
imo this song is about the sadness of 2 people/nations fighting a war on the expense of children. you don't just sit in a rocking chair when you built a revolution.
the reality is that elian gonzalez is part of a broken family which is a very sad thing. i wonder if he ever got the love that a child deserves. according to the lyrics he didn't.
@Nothiean, yeah, it's not part of the lyrics but ok.
let's hope he's happy at the cuban communist youth and sometimes can pour his heart out to fidel castro about the tragedic events that happened to him and his family.
This is about Elian Gonzalez, a 6-year-old Cuban boy who left the country in a boat with his mother and 12 others to seek asylum in the US. The boat didn't make it, and Elian was rescued by fishermen and brought to live with relatives in Miami. He became the subject of a major news story when he was ordered back to Cuba to live with his father (his mother died on the journey). US marshals had to seize the boy and send him back against the wishes of his relatives and many Cubans living in the US.
I agree, but he only played it acoustically as Fidel Castro and other Cubans asked the manics to play it. They said no because they had not rehearsed it, but eventually, James decided to do it, but it had to be solo.

@daryl4classic ts actually a pro-Cuba song. It deplores the US in their actions in the whole baby Elian saga.
