New York City is smart for keeping all it's power lines underground. You could be cooped up inside your flat without even looking out the window and not have known a tornado was on your block.
The author is correct as far as wind speed and water fall. It is a type of hurricane in respect to what the viewer is experiencing. The difference is a hurricane has maximum sustained winds of over 100mph and this storm, which we often referred to in Florida as a "no name storm", wherein the storm kicks up fast, is localized and then goes way in a few minutes or sometimes longer...feels and looks just like a little hurricane when it is over.
I have found MILLIONS of them already..... its breath taking.. I SWARE! So intense and dangerous... well most of them. I love searching tornados in nyc!
@tourguideStan - Yeah, I was definitely using the term loosely. (Thus the inclusion of 'hurricane' and 'storm' as well. But whatever it was it packed a decent punch for about fifteen seconds there ..
@AdognamedOp Haha Yeah im in Queens too, my block was fine. But as I rode around and stuff, trees were everywhere garbage cans everywhere it was a huge mess.
The steeple is St. Stephen. This thing hit like a a tidal wave to the side of a ship and then was gone. You can see when I pull back from the window that the perception is the building is under water .. and I'm on the fifth floor. And by the time I got to the other window the brunt had passed. Not sure if it was a tornado or straight winds/rain, but the effect for about fifteen solid seconds was hurricane-like.
Is that steeple of St Marys Star of Sea in the distance? My mom grew up on 4th place, and her aunt/uncle across street from st marys( my mom and dad were married there).Based on videos I've seen, seems you had microbursts-straight, sustained winds.Tornadoes twist tree trunks, etc. which are not seen in these. We had a few bursts up here in Northern NY (north of ofNYState thruway)-leveled many acres of trees, many powerless for more than 5 weeks. Stay safe. Good video! (pros will confirm this..)
does beiing in a tornado hurt?

@iamariarilke It is not a type of hurricane. If you don't know what you're talking about, don't type anything.

I've been looking at all these "tornado" storm tapings. So far, no tornado. I think the term is loosely used.

Yeah, the videos may show nothing, but the National Weather Service on CNN confirmed 2 tornadoes in addition to the microburst. Must have been crazy.

@tourguideStan it was a confirmed tornado
