I bet that he would've probably hit 400-500 HR in the major leagues. Not 900. If Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and other great sluggers played in this negro league, they would've probably hit around 1200.
@danrain12345 Why do you assume that the negro leagues were inferior to an all white league? Hank Aaron played integrated baseball, but Babe Ruth did not, he only played against the best white players of his day. The negro leaguers often barnstromed against the elite white players during the off season, including Bob Feller among others. So where does the Babe really stack up???
Barry Bonds has the record but that does not mean he was the greatest. The number of At Bats has to be considered. Mark Mcwire had 1 homer per 10.6 at bats. Babe Ruth had 1 homer per 11.2 at bats and Bonds had 1 homer per 11.7 AB.
@srp960 considering he left us at 34, he was far from finished. McGwire roided and Babe Ruth was great, but Josh Gibson was the best hitter ever and he hid from the spotlight, which is part of the reason his greatness is so neglected.

@micahtdubs Where are your stats to back this up? We are talking about HRs?
....I show Gibson only had 146, total. At that time, the Negro leagues were not on par with the MLB but were more eqivalent to the farm team play...AA, AAA etc.
@srp960 His HOF plaque credits almost 800, while various sources I've read, Larry Tye's Satchel and baseball card memorobilia to name 2. You need to change your whole view though, I could say the same garbage about "all white" baseball. The talent pool was limited to white people and would have been more like a high aa or aa club. Not only were blacks excluded, but latinos as well as jewish players and just about anyone without a pasty white hue. Read and think more deeply.
Gibson was good....really good....he once hit a ball out he got fooled on with one hand....BUT negro league pitching for the most part was garbage...Ruth is the homerun king but it wouldve been nice if Gibson had got a shot....he wouldve struggled at first but....he wouldve been good....
Not sure if you heard Joe Morgan's comments during this years Home Run Derby. All those idiot Yankee fans love to say that no ball was ever hit out of Yankee Stadium. While the announcers were saying their is debate on whether or not Josh Gibson ever hit one out; Joe Morgan said well all the Negro League players he has ever talked to said he did! - I loved it!
GREAT POEM! You are absolutely 100% correct! I wish more people knew about him! Not only the greatest home run hitter, the best player of all time! While people talk about Mickey Mantle's near home run out of Yankee Stadium; Josh Gibson actually hit one out of the park!

Considering they found him in the stands looking for a replacement catcher, not a bad career at all.
