  • No Traction control pure skill but he had the nickname on the roof Vatanen!

  • Gartrac shell.

  • what a car and what a driver, such a shame he rolled it tho an amazing car.

  • All I can say is it's a fast car. The MK2 would have been out of production at this point as well, but what a car. It's not a normal rally RS1800 anyway, because you can tell by the driver control it has at least 300 bhp under the bonnet. That's the ultimate development of the BD series engines before they started the turbocharging

  • 8 people who dislike this have no pulse

  • I'm now reconsidering the current WRC Fiesta's new paint job because of this.

  • What was the homologation of that car? Was that a group IV or something else?

  • @SparrowNoblePoland

    Group B.

The previous Escorts were all Group 4.

  • Ari did better in a pug up the side of pikes peak

  • i saw it a few months ago, still looking awesome.

  • I saw it a few months ago, its still utterly awesome.

  • Awesome is a schoolboy word. But I have to use it here. Ari and that Escort, awesome! ;-)

  • strathclyde park at the tyres

  • He´s a JEDI!!!!.

  • The Engine is a Cosworth BDX 2.1,putting out around 278BHP.

  • would love to see loeb in a mk2

  • @R32SKYLINEBWD Loeb - no way - citroen :)

  • the Mk2 escort is still ,competing in rallies, along with the Mk1 ,but not so much the Mk1,....for anyone to even doubt that the escort Rwd ,has been the world's greatest competition car hands down is a fool ,there is nothing that even comes close to it ,for length of service ,30 years after the last one roll out ,its getting better cheeRS

  • @16rsmexico nothing comes close. okay. but what would come second to this....? would it be the e30 m3?

  • MK1/2 the worlds most successful competition car of all time ,nothing even comes close.

  • I believe that's lancia delta (6 time world champion in a row)

  • Vilken jävla hjälte. Rally will never be the same.

  • That noise! Is there a better-sounding 4 cylinder than the Cosworth BD?

    Love it.

  • Cosworth YB has the own unique sound.

Still nothing cant touch BDA tune at 9000rpm, no ferrari, lambos etc never.

  • @Rich606 , i have it as a ring tone i love it that much

  • vatanen the best !

  • Ari vatanen, Walter Rohrl, A. Mikkola, H. Toivonen, M. Allen... they were not only pilots, they were true philosophers of rallying. They left a big legacy to succeeding generations, and miss in our hearts! Maybe this sport go back to what it was 20 or 30 years ago, one day ...

  • Any doubt about who diserves FIA presidence?

  • I WANT that car. Lovely machine. One of my favorite drivers too. And I never knew Ari was in EU Parliament; that's cool. Better than Arnold Shwarzenegger being Gov. of California. At least Ari is cool; and almost certainly smarter too.

  • @justforever96 Yes Ari did some work in the transport / traffic savety department.

  • @MultiArrie - No shit...I don't know whether that's ironic or not! LOL.

I've been going back to a bunch of videos that I've commented on, and at least half of them have me in the "highest rated comments" section! That's really weird...but cool too. Thanks, YouTube...you made my day! =D

  • this was the man that colin mcrae, the man himself R.I.P , who loved the most before he started rallying at the top level, & you can see why,

  • That is simply crazy driving. I didn't even remember what it was like back then.

  • This Escort now lives at Jason Lepleys in a plastic bubble totaly restored!

    Ari is the god

  • Ari was on the limit all the time!

He now is a member of Eu parliament in Brussels but still finds the time to speak/mail to fans across the world.

The MCD car had a Dave Wild 2.0 BDG engine on Lucas fuel injection, basicly it was a F2 engine with 295 bhp.

Black Beauty was another Escort driven by Ari in 1978 and prepared by David Sutton.

  • Did they rebuild the car after the smash?

  • I love at 1:06 when he goes off the road he comes out of that ditch screaming!! He just kept his foot in it man I love Ari. A motorsport legend indeed.

  • I'd love to be a passenger. :-D

  • Anteeksi Ari,sä olit GREAT DRIVER.

  • NO milk today.

  • great driver good in the colin mcrae stges last year, also i think now a politician in finland

  • He lives on a farm in France and indeed is a politician

  • He is in EU parliament.

  • Proper rallying, enough said....

  • I couldn't be his co-driver, not for all the money in the world. The guy pushes the limits of what is possible without fear of the maybe's.

  • "i really enjoy every brake, every sideways.."

    What a legend.

  • totally agree...

    what a legend

  • Ari and the escort, superb!!

  • Can anyone tell me what engine was in this car. I know the development of this car, the MK3 MCD escort used a 1700cc BDT (Turboed BDA) running around 350BHP in full works spec.

  • I've heard a rumor that it was 2.1 BDX. But ofcourse I can't tell for sure...

  • @Todt1 2.0 BDG ENGINE

  • @Todt1 The Engine is a Cosworth BDX 2.1,putting out around 278BHP.

  • @Todt1

I recently met the engine builder of this car, it was a 2000 BDT block but normally aspirated. It produced around 270BHP this was good for the time. I believe it was also running on Lucas mechanical fuel injection.

  • @Todt1 if only someone would create a search engine for the internet.....oh wait...GOOGLE!!!!

  • @Todt1 The engine was a normally aspirated 2.0 BDA engine built by Brian Hart, producing, in high lift cam tarmac spec about 270-275 HP. Most of the performance gain in this car was simply from weight reduction.

  • You must remeber Ari was the ONLY man to pass 3 works Fiat 131's in 1 stage in an Escort. Either 1977 or 1979 in the Rally of New Zealand. Legend. Apparently it is reported the NZ Ford dealers ran out of Mk2 Escort tail lights because Ari's car was driven around the corners boot first, tapping the fence posts along the way. Double legend!!!

  • would love to see more of this car

  • Classic car and a classic man. Both were something to watch.

  • I worked with rally mechs who would pull thier fingernails out for Ari, max attack all the time!!!!! Man he was fast!!! And never gave up. MCD Escort was a cruise missile compared to all else. Thank you Ari for wringing its kneck.

  • "...i don`t think we ever really won anything, but we were really really fast in that car!" GREAT!!! :-)

  • Perfect car and a great sportsman...thanks for posting a great video!!

  • he he he 2 fast 2 furious

  • Good ole Ari, flat out as always. :)

There may have been faster drivers than Vatanen, but few who were as spectacular, which is why he will always be a hero of mine.

If you ever read this Ari, (which I doubt you will), can I just say thanks for all the memorys of your on the limit, and over the limit driving.

  • this car built by mcd,who later became R.E.D.,

and was built in WIDNES CHESHIRE,where the car rolls on the Manx,I was standing on top of the bank where it came to rest,Harryman smoked cigs 3 at a time and produced a bottle of JAMESONS from somewhere,Ari was asked by an Irishman what happened,to be told,`I THINK IT CRASHED`!!!!!

It was an out & out racer, few drivers of today would be able to handle it,it was a pleasure to see it in a masters hands, drove as though it was stolen!!! ta 4 the clip.

  • i spoke to ari and had my pic taken with him at chatsowrth rally show last weeknd

  • nice mk2 and the fast ari vatanen is best

  • This car was one of the fastest rallycars of the day built by the then mighty M.C.D.who later became R.E.D.now based in Flint North Wales,in the capable hands of the `chukkle brothers`,the car was an out and out racer built to the maximum of the day,i still hear it in my sleep,it was no good putting anyone else in it,as the only one who can handle it did so,mr vatanan, thanks for the memory of thisclassic motor.

  • he is the only one there now how to deive rally

  • I have just been looking at (black beauty) the other day no engine in it but had a word with the owner was told its away for a rebuild (one hell of a car) i bet it will bring all the fans out when it returns thanks for letting me have a look Alain

  • well yes...crash was because of the rwd. nice escort. best years of rally.

  • For sure..

Ari is going to be competing in this years McRae stages in a mk2 escort alongside Mikkola, Waldegard, and many others.. Google McRae rally tribute for details.

    Unmissable !

  • all clips of the Black Beauty is

REG: DKP 191T except the second clip, that is REG: FEK 472V Cant make out the Rally plate, but I know this car was in The Circuit of Ireland in 1982!

  • Nice footage. Thx !!

  • A great driver,crazy as hell,fast as a bullit and detructiv like a catterpilar,that was Ari Vatanen!!!

  • i think this is the car (what number shell it is i don't know)i seen today just after it had been stripped of all paint.on the way to be painted back into the circuit of ireland colours. stunning mint shell :)

  • lol at mental escort, Ari sure knew how to push any car he drove in. Thats why he is a legend, along with Hannu Mikkola.

  • mental escort

  • Sattuu löytymään Ford Escort RS2000 Mk2 :)

  • he was great driver along with mr hannu mikkola

  • mun suosikkiautoni.olisi aikanaan upeaa omistaa valkoinen rs 2000 - 76 ja 77 sininen rs2000

  • upea auto....

  • my idol..along with hannu mikkola.and kyösti hämalainen

  • mkII 1975-1980

  • these cars stillm look great and sound fantastic

  • That Escort Looks Great In That Livery! Very Fast Too!

  • that place he crashed the escort..with the amateur footage....same place Alister Mcrae crashed on the Manx in 1997...in his VW Golf..series of bumps, on a very fast section..small jump unsettles the car..if it lands heavily..bang your gone....

  • hyvä ari ja maitoo

  • last roll ford escort LoL v..ut sano vatanen

  • car was wrottn off in ireland after a rally by a junior mechanic who decided to take her for a run himself

    sad

  • ya. can't remember the mechanic's name. it was an amazing car. too powerful for 2wd, even for ari vatanen

  • legend

  • It is said to have been the fastest Escort ever.

  • It was basically a Group 4 spec Escort but it had the uprated BDX engine that was of a bigger capacity (I think 2.2 litres) and more powerful than the BDG (275 bhp rather than 240-250 bhp)as run by the works in the 70's. It still had the Atlas axle at the back and the 5 speed ZF race box though.

  • This rally footage is from the Isle of Mann, but the interview section with Ari, is actually from "The Vatanen Touch: Too". You can order it from a bunch of places, including Duke Video. Both The Vatanen Touch (the first of the series, and arguably one of the best rally videos ever) and The Vatanen Touch Too are great picks for any true rally fan. Hope this helps.

  • you can order the video from duke video on the isle of man it is called 'Flat Out' 1982 british open

  • hey thats great!never knew about that escort mk2.you have more info on that?wheres that clip from?is it off a dvd or sth?

  • I don't know much about it. But i've read its _highly_ modified and it wouldnt even fit the rules. And the engine is 2.1 BDX.

I have no clue where the clip was taken from.

  • @Vamppas The clip is from the video Vatanen Touch Too

  • I know this Escort was nicknamed 'Black Beauty' , and I think it was a modified version of one of the Eatons Yale Escorts from the late 70's. (Though I could be wrong on that point)
