All I can say is it's a fast car. The MK2 would have been out of production at this point as well, but what a car. It's not a normal rally RS1800 anyway, because you can tell by the driver control it has at least 300 bhp under the bonnet. That's the ultimate development of the BD series engines before they started the turbocharging
the Mk2 escort is still ,competing in rallies, along with the Mk1 ,but not so much the Mk1,....for anyone to even doubt that the escort Rwd ,has been the world's greatest competition car hands down is a fool ,there is nothing that even comes close to it ,for length of service ,30 years after the last one roll out ,its getting better cheeRS
Ari vatanen, Walter Rohrl, A. Mikkola, H. Toivonen, M. Allen... they were not only pilots, they were true philosophers of rallying. They left a big legacy to succeeding generations, and miss in our hearts! Maybe this sport go back to what it was 20 or 30 years ago, one day ...
I WANT that car. Lovely machine. One of my favorite drivers too. And I never knew Ari was in EU Parliament; that's cool. Better than Arnold Shwarzenegger being Gov. of California. At least Ari is cool; and almost certainly smarter too.
@MultiArrie - No shit...I don't know whether that's ironic or not! LOL.
I've been going back to a bunch of videos that I've commented on, and at least half of them have me in the "highest rated comments" section! That's really weird...but cool too. Thanks, YouTube...you made my day! =D
I love at 1:06 when he goes off the road he comes out of that ditch screaming!! He just kept his foot in it man I love Ari. A motorsport legend indeed.
Can anyone tell me what engine was in this car. I know the development of this car, the MK3 MCD escort used a 1700cc BDT (Turboed BDA) running around 350BHP in full works spec.
I recently met the engine builder of this car, it was a 2000 BDT block but normally aspirated. It produced around 270BHP this was good for the time. I believe it was also running on Lucas mechanical fuel injection.
@Todt1 I recently met the engine builder of this car, it was a 2000 BDT block but normally aspirated. It produced around 270BHP this was good for the time. I believe it was also running on Lucas mechanical fuel injection.
@1000Hannu "270BHP this was good for the time" -it is good now, you don't see this power in naturally aspirated 2.0 engines often, only turbocharged. No variable timing, no electronics.
@Todt1 The engine was a normally aspirated 2.0 BDA engine built by Brian Hart, producing, in high lift cam tarmac spec about 270-275 HP. Most of the performance gain in this car was simply from weight reduction.
You must remeber Ari was the ONLY man to pass 3 works Fiat 131's in 1 stage in an Escort. Either 1977 or 1979 in the Rally of New Zealand. Legend. Apparently it is reported the NZ Ford dealers ran out of Mk2 Escort tail lights because Ari's car was driven around the corners boot first, tapping the fence posts along the way. Double legend!!!
I worked with rally mechs who would pull thier fingernails out for Ari, max attack all the time!!!!! Man he was fast!!! And never gave up. MCD Escort was a cruise missile compared to all else. Thank you Ari for wringing its kneck.

and was built in WIDNES CHESHIRE,where the car rolls on the Manx,I was standing on top of the bank where it came to rest,Harryman smoked cigs 3 at a time and produced a bottle of JAMESONS from somewhere,Ari was asked by an Irishman what happened,to be told,`I THINK IT CRASHED`!!!!!
It was an out & out racer, few drivers of today would be able to handle it,it was a pleasure to see it in a masters hands, drove as though it was stolen!!! ta 4 the clip.
This car was one of the fastest rallycars of the day built by the then mighty M.C.D.who later became R.E.D.now based in Flint North Wales,in the capable hands of the `chukkle brothers`,the car was an out and out racer built to the maximum of the day,i still hear it in my sleep,it was no good putting anyone else in it,as the only one who can handle it did so,mr vatanan, thanks for the memory of thisclassic motor.
I have just been looking at (black beauty) the other day no engine in it but had a word with the owner was told its away for a rebuild (one hell of a car) i bet it will bring all the fans out when it returns thanks for letting me have a look Alain
Ari is going to be competing in this years McRae stages in a mk2 escort alongside Mikkola, Waldegard, and many others.. Google McRae rally tribute for details.
i think this is the car (what number shell it is i don't know)i seen today just after it had been stripped of all paint.on the way to be painted back into the circuit of ireland colours. stunning mint shell :)
that place he crashed the escort..with the amateur footage....same place Alister Mcrae crashed on the Manx in 1997...in his VW Golf..series of bumps, on a very fast section..small jump unsettles the car..if it lands heavily..bang your gone....
It was basically a Group 4 spec Escort but it had the uprated BDX engine that was of a bigger capacity (I think 2.2 litres) and more powerful than the BDG (275 bhp rather than 240-250 bhp)as run by the works in the 70's. It still had the Atlas axle at the back and the 5 speed ZF race box though.

The MCD car had a Dave Wild 2.0 BDG engine on Lucas fuel injection, basicly it was a F2 engine with 295 bhp.
Black Beauty was another Escort driven by Ari in 1978 and prepared by David Sutton.
