so Cynic has abiously (spelling sucks I'm Croatian) been a proggresive band whey before Tool ever made something as atmospheric and proggresive sounding as Focus. Completly diffrent music background...you cannot label Cynic as being a certain style of music...The same goes for Tool from the aenima era up to today (before that it was a great band with an awsome vocalist and Drummer)

The only "God" in Tool is the drummer. Maynard makes the band but there are vocalists who could just destory him in range, projection, control and over-all tone (but that is a matter of opinion I suppose.)

BUT, although I love Cynic, it deeply upsets me that they use the pitch harmonizer for his voice...the guy can sing but if they want someone with that range they need a new vocalist because right now they are just cheating.

@c4r50n1 But again, his voice is jumped an octave. It's not pitch correction, it's a far larger degree of pitch alteration than mere correction. So either way, it's for effect and it's not like he's relying on it to sing when it's not really his voice anyway. Vocoder or autotune, that super-high voice is not his. His voice sounds actually remarkably good live, all things considered, and I'm not even a gigantic Cynic fan.

@Tetragrammaton8TV You can use autotune live, it just won't really correct your singing and only give you a robotic effect. Listen to when he's talking at the beginning how occasionally when he talks the pitch shifts really fast. That's because of the autotune.

Cynic is tool on steroids. That's pretty much the only fair way to compare or contrast the two. Cynic was around first, so the statement that Cynic is copying Tool is just outright false. I am a fan of Tool myself, but tool isn't even in the same galaxy as far as musicianship.

That really pushes my buttons when people judge how good a band is by how popular they are. Look at Nickelback. They're more popular than Cynic will ever be.
