  • this is wonderful but i prefer the bootleg version, sounds truly out of this world

  • This is one of many masterpieces by Bob Dylan

  • @mikhkos Morrison wrote a large number of poems and songs, and he had an IQ of over 160

  • At least he's singing. Now his voice sounds like a coffee grinder.

  • This is one of those Dylan songs where his singing is a bit irritating.

  • @mikhkos Haha. For a second I thought you were talking about Van Morrison. I was like, "What the heck? Van Morrison was all sex appeal?" XD

  • such a great song so many great lines, i just don't know where to begin and it makes me feel so sorrryyyyyyyyyy

  • fucking badass harmonica solo

  • This album is about divorce, and it is very personal. It's a masterpiece. This song is part of a larger journey. Listen to it all, it is catharsis for those who need it.

  • this song is so epic. most people will never hear it.

I couldnt believe after all these years we didnt know bob any better than that...

  • He gets "angry" very well.

  • This song so well speaks the pitty you feel for "idiots" when you look into their future and see that they're headed for distruction... Wonderful song

  • @OHWISEONE1996 pity not pitty and destruction npt distruction

  • the cold wind of morning whistled by, a storm of motion, a humming and roaring with ever-shifting overtones; but you sat snug behind a tilted wind-shield, which slid the gale up over your head. Sometimes you liked to put your hand up, and feel the cold impact; sometimes you would peer around the side of the shield, and let the torrent hit your forehead, and toss your hair about

  • @ilv0lpe

i think that what his songs are supposed to do

  • doesn't get much better than "i can't feel you anymore, i can't even touch the books you've read"

  • raw, unadulterated spite. through the poetry comes the anguished "idiot wind...you're an idiot." you can sink your teeth into it.

  • simply amazing.i get chills when he says"you'll never know the hurt i suffered and all the pain i rise above and ill never know the same about you"epic.his voice says it all.

  • @gasquetgoddess Yeah! And your "censoring" too!

  • Dylan is Sublime. Everytime I hear this song or "Potively Fourth Street," I think about my father; the anger just seems to flow from it.

  • @mussman717word There are so many assholes I think of when I hear Fourth Street--not calling your father that...that's just who I think of...

  • "One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzing around your eyes, blood on your saddle." Dylan is so scathing with his words. I love angry Dylan!

  • @1281Anne Yeah, Bitchy Bob is wonderful!

  • @1281Anne...how about Dylan's Masters Of War, "And I hope that you die, and your death'll come soon, I'll follow your casket, on a pale afternoon", that's pretty angry.

  • timeless.....

  • without a doubt my favorite song of all time. How many lines in this song can you relate to? Dylan is a genius. Saw him in Seattle in 2001, a great experience. Check out one of his newer songs "Mississippi", another gem. Lacks the power of this one but still pure Dylan magic.

  • we're idiots babe. it's a wonder we can ever feed ourselves. genius at work...

  • Amazing :)

  • Love this song.

  • "Someone's got it in for me, they're planting stories in the press".

  • Dylan is th shit!

  • Dylan is the shit!

  • This song, along with most of bob dylan's other songs, is great because you can listen and relate it to someone or something you know personally. That's an artist. Someone who has the ability to always slip in the cracks of your emotions that go unsaid all too often.

  • to my idiot doctor!!!

  • A sad and bitter-sweet battle of emotions... As if dylan was lighting a torch of redemption in this song

  • Great song, fantastic lyrics. One of hisbest

  • Rapping before the birth of rap.

  • @NYRomanista haha I always considered subteranian home sick blues the first rap song ever...

  • great song

  • Sir Bobness of Dylanshire, we salute you - even though you are a truculent old prick.

  • perfect -his best song imo

  • what more can one say, just another brilliant album from the man himself-------he is a genius that is for sure.

  • Dylan Rules! that simple......kids behave now!

  • "The preist wore black on the seventh day, and sat stone faced while the building burned.

I waited for you, on the running boards, near the cyprus tree, while the spring time turned, slowly into autumn".

    Genius

  • reminds me of my boss!!!!!!!

  • actually. I am a psychologist.

  • Robert Zimmerman is a Musical God

  • Bob Dylan is a fucking genius

he fit so many lyrics in and make it work.

  • This song reminds me of this girl I know who is 22 and refuses to stop acting like a child.

  • Me too...she's 23...

  • @evildnalor all his songs do

    almost

  • Rightly you did!

  • I can't even touch the books you've read

  • Out of such heartache and regret Dylan presented a crowning achievement of poetic imagery and sound: "..She inherited a million bucks, and when she died it came to me--I can't help it if I'm lucky" and a dozen other examples, of remarkable elegance, can be heard on this Lp. When Dylan received the Kennedy honors he sat alongside other honorees in the balcony--I couldn't help thinking: "I wonder if these people truly know what exactly Dylan contributed to the world?"

  • i love this song but ...i have to say that the Ny session version is far better and should have benn on Blood on the tracks

  • This song is pure genius. What a song. Loved it since it first came out. Dylan forever.

  • no one read below this...just enjoy the song

  • This song rings and rings in my head! Ccyclling to work it comes on an on. This is one special song! "Your corrupt ways have finally made you blind!" I just love the lyrics - play it again - and again - and again!

  • I believe riz means to say "keep on keepin' on"

  • thanks i needed a shot of this......

( a man named GRAY) NEVER BLACK OR WHITE WITH DEE WOMAN)

  • the best line ever...'sort of encompasses the pathway of dylan's art...and how all the pathways can be different...how all of us can be different....how all of us have questions....how all of us can find the answers ..... "there's a lone soldier on the cross, smoke pouring out of a boxcar door .. you didn't know it, you didn't think it could be done, in the final end he won the war after losing every battle"

  • You've hurt the ones that I love best and covered up the truth with lies

One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzing around your eyes

    Blood on your saddle

    Do lyrics get more powerful?

  • This one is for Emma. I hope some day you fall in love with a guy who puts you through the heartbreak and torment you put me through. "You're an idiot babe..."

  • I've been double crossed now for the very last time and now im finally free...

You'll never know the hurt Ive suffered nor the pain I rise above...

  • yeah im sure a starving child living in poverty couldnt possibly imagine the suffering and pain a middle class person must be enduring...

  • pavlov

  • People suffer to many different degrees within all levels of society, you don't have to be at absolute 3rd world level poverty to experience profound misery, anguish and pain...People who use the above argument seem to be looking for a way to callous themselves to suffering related to their more immediate environment rather than genuinely expressing real concern toward 3rd world people (or 1st world)..maybe not in all cases, but from discussions I've with others Ive gotten this impression

  • i can see where you are coming from. but what my point is you need to appreciate what you have and that it could be alot worse. im 17 and i swear ive heard so many people mainly girls my age complain about there social lives and how much they hate there lives and it is really sickening.

  • Maybe they are experiencing things that may not be easily recognized from your perspective, or face issues that are related to their characteristics, temperament, dispositions, and how these criteria interact within society. Possibly they have dysfunctional familial circumstances that are too personal to be revealed, or their difficulties relate to past traumatic experiences that cant be resolved..patience, empathy and compassion are the better choices before condemnation or harsh judgment.

  • very good points and your very much right and i do agree with you i suppose.. but im not sure your hearing what im saying. what im saying is that uptownjesusRS is being ignorant when he/she thinks there pain is beyond what anyone else suffers. with reference to people who i believe are the worst off in the world, more than people with family difficulties and such. my opinion though

  • Just because you've got money doesn't mean you're immune to suffering.

Examples: Kurt Cobain, Howard Hughes, Walt Disney, Heath Ledger.

  • yeah but what did they all suffer?... me sometimes i get down like this morning i felt like shit and was contemplating smashing into something with my car at high speed.... but thats not cos im suffering alot.. its cos sometimes i can be very weak, and ignorant and blind and not appreciate what i have. i am a fool... but then i came around. because its not so bad, people have it worse. so i cant pretend i have suffered as much as them. its disrespectful

  • What else do you term living with pain like that? I call it "suffering"...

  • and i call calling it suffering, being weak and ignorant.

  • Suffering is suffering, no matter the magnitude. You cannot speak for someone else's subjective experiences.

  • ive been through what you call 'suffering' and i know its bad and it is hard. im not denying that. but at the end of the day people need to toughen up and get on through. thats what i did and things are so much better. thats all im trying to say.

  • Now you're talking about two different things. "Toughening up" and dealing with your suffering has nothing to do with your original point of saying "these people didn't suffer because they aren't poor and starving".

Plus, you have no idea what Bob went through before or during his fame. He could have spent all his money or racked up huge debts or gotten involved with people that used him. So, like I said, you can't speak about someone else's experience - you can only talk about your own.

  • no there very much the same thing im talking about...... so let me sum it up so you can make sense of it......everyone needs to toughen up, and understand that there are people worse off.....now im not paying bob out, im a huge fan of bob, he has said some things i disagree with over time, but hes said a lot more which i really do agree with

  • as for the poor and starving.... i think anyone suffering in there life now would trade places with someone living in poverty for very long.. its when you dont turn a blind eye that you appreciate what you hve and how lucky you are

  • why do you put this shit on the internet. People like you are so sad, that shit is so pathetic to go do. Like no one else has issue, stop being so self centered and selfish, go see a shrink or something, don't put this shit on the internet you tool

  • i agree, just because other people have it worse doesn't mean you shouldn't have it better. dude just talked about driving his car into something, stop arguing on the internet and go see a shrink riz.

  • I still havent won the war......but goddam this song always helps

  • I love this song! *****

  • Haven't listened to this song in a while, probably cuz I'm not bitter and pissed as I was before. I forget how biting the lyrics are, definetely one of the most vicious songs ever wirtten

  • have you considered the meaning is not as obvious as you think

  • have you?

  • amazingg song!

  • Indeed ya. This album floors me every time.

  • been separated from my daughter due to her vindictive mother, she's 22 now and loves living with me, yeah Bob, I won the war after losing every battle

  • Many people don't understand the concept of winning the war after losing every battle. Congratulations to you on two counts. First and foremost, having the opportunity to bond with your daughter after so many years. And secondly, for having the intellect and patience to understanding that you could win the war without winning any of the battles.

  • You should write a book about that story.

  • 14 de feb!

  • The song is about his ex wife Sara after their divorce...he was angry and hurting-plain and simple.

  • this album is from 1975, then didn't force until 1977, so that isn't exactly it. It just deals with the problems they had been having recently...they were split up at the time, not divorced.

  • Bob was angry when he wrote and performed this song, the alternative version is so much heartfelt and reflective, he realised he was as much to blame, listen to the alternative hear the difference, a man so sad, acoustic which makes it sound softer official Bootleg Series -1-3, brilliant version as well.

  • Yes, the angriest song I've ever heard

  • angrier than Positively 4th Street?

  • are you kidding me?

  • Blood on the tracks is one of those records that you will always remember the exact day you listened to it.

  • The thing I have always loved about Dylan is his ability to shoot from the hip. Most of us process words in our heads before we speak and we often withhold emotions from our phraseology. But he doesn't sugarcoat it, or process it, or even try to make it easy to comprehend, he just puts it out there raw without rationalizing it first and with all the emotion and innuendo. That is why some people will find it distasteful and others will understand. You either get it or you don't.

  • I've been told this was Bob's resentment at the hippy movement's inability to affect any real change. Though it's probably up to interpretation.

  • It's not about a woman, it's about all of us.

  • It's more about AJ Weberman than anything else.

  • Wasn't AJ the "garbologist"?

  • He invented garbology. He was also a Dylanologist, Phone Tapper, and stalker.

  • Your an IDIOT BABE its a wonder you still know how to breathe, i like singin this to my ex girlfriend lol

  • I always told myself to NEVER have a favorite

Dylan song. There's too many. But I have to admit, it my heart this song wins. Keep writing

    Sir Bob. We'll keep listening.

  • this song is awesome...In fact the whole album is amazing...bob is my hero

  • Absolutely. He's mad at people in general, he's mad at her, he's mad at himself. This is one of the angriest songs ever written, I think. Classic.

  • Angry and beautiful. Not many can pull that off. Dylan for the win... "I haven't known peace and quiet for so long, I don't remember what it's like".

  • this song brings out the best in me in a painful situation.. blood on the tracks is pretty great.

  • Oh Oh Oh Oh Ohhhh

  • The ferocity of the lyric: "smoke pouring out of a box car door."

    Kee-rist!

  • Lots of venom in this song...

  • no offense but did someone just compare fiona apple and tool to bob dylan ?... I mean their music isnt bad but lyric wise dylan has them beat ...maybe shakespear or mark freakin twain has dylan beat on words..but lets face it ..they didnt play no guitar!!!

  • Mind blower... I have read just about everything Mark Freakin Twain has ever wrote... and, if good ole Sam would've ever had the time to learn the guitar.. WOW... thats something that could be discussed for years and years!

  • i fucking love this song....... so fucking great.

great lyrics.. and just bob dylans great appeal.

  • My father played me this song when i three and i am 23 years old and still remeber it.

  • Possibly the best song on 'Blood On The Tracks', although "Shelter From The Storm", "Tangled Up In Blue" and "You're A Big Girl Now" are high up, as well.

  • lily, rosemary and the jack of hearts is the best on blood on the tracks!!!

  • I think Don't Think Twice It's All Right (also a Dylan song from the Freewheelin' Bob Dylan) is a better break up song.

  • best break up song ever

  • prince's purple rain takes that distinction.

  • I do understand what you mean by all of that. However, most music made today by newer artists either has to be cool and sung with a good voice or kids will disrgard it. And that's a shame. Music doesn't have to be made just to make you dance and have fun. It can also be made for revealing deep and personal feelings like the output from Nirvana or this song here.

I don't hate today's music, but it's played without much of an edge now and for me, that's a turn off.

  • Where are the poets of today? {please don't lump rappers in with the likes of Dylan, Morrison, Baez and Havens}. The talent just isn't as plentiful as it once was. We were spoiled, and many failed to appreciate the genius around that period. I thought it would continue as before. Sadly, it just hasn't.

  • I know. Anybody that comes out today who thinks they can make it are only duplicating a past act and that's being unoriginal. Nobody can present us with something new and we can't get our minds blown away.

Me, I'm only 15 (ongoing 16), but I love the older music. I agree with you when you express your disappointment how many failed to appreciate the REAL genius from that period. The words came out from the heart, the albums were all vinyl records, and everybody loved somebody popular

  • check a band called THE BLACK LIPS. they rock. poetry for this age

  • haha DON'T LUMP RAPPERS

    DON'T LUMP RAPPERS YOU GUYS

  • You're an idiot, babe.

  • No need to be rude. Just an aesthetic disagreement.

  • "{please don't lump rappers in with the likes of Dylan, Morrison, Baez and Havens}."

Ironically, at the time Dylan was recording Oh Mercy, Daniel Lanois, the producer, asked him what he likes to listen to. Dylan said Rap and mentioned some rappers- Public Enemy- if I remember correctly- and spoke about their way with words with appreciation and even enthusiasm.

If you don't believe me just read his autobiography.

  • @d1974 this just proves that Dylan is an idiot.

  • @MrMonsterstiffy No it means he can appreciate other forms of expression... assbag.

  • @MrMonsterstiffy no the wind is an idiot!!

  • Even you, yes2day.. you had to ask me where it was at. I believe after all these years you didnt know me better than that...

  • People see me all the time and they just cant remember how to act..

  • Dylan could always paint a vivid picture with a song.....

  • song is amazing

  • lol...ok ty john have fun ;)wink wink

  • It is from the bible..in the old testament when someone was bitten by a poisonous snake they would look at the bronze snake on a stck and be healed...also, it is symbolic of Jesus on the cross. Thank you Johnedwin

  • Would a bronze snake on a stick be acceptable?

    Thank you

  • Now THIS is how you gripe about a bad relationship.

  • I have become an idiot trying to understand how she got that way.

  • I love just tunelessly singing along to this, its such a passionate song. God bless you Bob.

  • "Smoke pouring out of a boxcar door"

  • What I love about this song is how, in i guess trying to show up Sara, he shows up the persona of Dylan. Whenever i listen to this i can feel how difficult it might be living with 'Bob Dylan', both for Sara and Robert himself.

Oh and I love the outrage in his voice: "Even YOU! Yesterday! you had to ask me where it was at! I couldn't BELIEVE that after all these years, YOU didnt know me any better than that!"

I guess we all feel like that about people we love sometimes.

  • There's no such thing as a favorite

Dylan song, but if I allowed myself

to have one, it would be this one.

Pure Genius. Long Live the Owner

    of the Shire.

  • what about black diamond bay...is it near the top spot?

  • I really couldn't place that song so I had to

look it up. Another Gem! I just wonder how all those words come out of one head? Thanks so much for bringing B.D.Bay to my attention.

    Cathy

  • wonderful stuff!

  • he did that live when i saw him it was the one song that really got the crowd moving and it was a powerful version i had dreams of it for months after

  • The best part of this song is how it can almost be about Bob himself.

  • Bush is "Idiot Wind".....

  • LARS is a a great vocal, but to me it's always come across as more playful than venomous. Sort of like he's sticking his tongue out at Joan. JMO of course

  • This is the greatest song ever written and yes I'm including the Beatles too.

  • Hell, this is a 10.

  • It's an 11 in my book.

  • "One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzing around your eyes, blood on your saddle".....

  • blowing like a circle around my skull, from the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol...

    oh what a rhyme!

  • I always loved this one, awesome freakin' tune!!!
