  • Heard this on totp:1977 the night dont know why but think its tremendous

  • I'm that bit happier for this...

  • fab

  • too fuckin; cool

  • I seen this when it was first broadcast. I'm sure John jumped around and trashed the amp (much to Willy's dismay). ???

  • One dislike? That's really Free!

  • Pugnacious version. Great stuff.

  • I saw Wild Willy busking with that guitar outside Putney Station!!

    My Moment of fame.

  • hey, wiggle58...maybe we crossed paths. my youth was also extremely misspent but at least we had the honour of misspending our adolescence to the accompaniment of these brilliant lunatics.

  • yay - loved these guys - followed them round all over the place in my misspent youth.

  • im going to see them soon in whiotstable

  • It was a bit lame when He almost crippled Himself on this show ,

  • This is the best song in the world.

  • Brilllllliaaant!

  • saw it at the time, but not since..absolutley ace.i laughed and cried.barret is a true guitar god and otoway pure eccentric. YEAH!!!

  • I saw him for the first time around ´73 when he used to play in a pub in oxford and he used to swing down on a rope hanging from the ceiling, while doing a tarzan impression !

I´ve read a message on this site that said he couldn´t sing, couldn´t play and couldn´t even walk right, I don´t agree with any that and apart from being a great live act, he wrote some brilliant songs, like "trying times" . . . .

  • Yep it was me that said he couldnt sing. John, in his autobiography, would back that up with "had a vocal range of almost an octave" (or similar). But that doesnt detract from the fact that the guy is pure entertainment. Im a massive fan, he should have had more success and Id agree with the comment on brilliant songs, "Josephine", "What a Woman", "Greeny Blue", "Misty Mountain" and loads more... I wish him all the success in the world, he deserves it.

  • I went out and bought than album the day after this was on Whistle Test -those were the days!!

    Phil x

  • @Djunfitforwork whistle test was were you got the real up and coming bands.

  • these guys are bloody nuts

  • I saw them in Birmingham around 1977-8. Impossible to forget - I feel lucky to have seen their certain mad genius at work. It was mayhem - their amp kept stopping and they kept kicking it to make it work while still playing and singing. Wild Willie was playing the same broken guitar excellently. Thanks for putting this up. Please put up more by them - have you got "Delilah" and "Green Grass of Home"?

  • OMG, THANK YOU for posting this! I'd been dying to see this performance on "The Old, Grey Whistle Test"!

  • The best thing I have ever seen in my life. I can now die a happy man.

  • Brilliant ! Dont suppose you've got Beware of the flowers.....?

  • Watch this space....

  • Thanks for the speedy response!! :)

  • Cracking stuff but one question - which is John and which is Willy???

IMHO this is a better version than the 'live' version from TotP also posted here on youtube!

  • Really Free,Kick ME!Great times, thier live gigs were great fun.
