It is very curious how both the Windows systems engineer and the executive editor of one of the biggest trade magazines are both promoting a commercial product. There is not very much objectivity here... Whether you like or dislike Microsoft is not relevant, it just seems strange to me that this kind of marketing, be it in any industry, is not frowned upon
meanwhile MacOS version 7 was right around the corner featuring multitasking in a seamless GUI ... this is like watching cave men invent fire in central park
I still get a chuckle on how much Windows 3 still looked almost like a MAC environment. You would think Microsoft after a major upgrade like this would have at least been more creative and more apart from the MAC prototypes.
I almost got caught flogging the dolphin to my very first computer porn... girlfriends older brothers 'pc' - he was out... i was horny... or was when i saw an exe file with an interesting name, ran it and it was a hi-rez black & white animation of a naked woman with her boobies bouncing... then girlfriend walks upstairs, could i remember the simplet command cls? no... esc and space, it scrolled up... space space space space tap tap titty-tap tap... shit hurry up...tappy tappy.... hello darling!
1MB or ram. This is back in my hey day. I been around computers for 23 years. At age 3 i was introduced to them. Windows 3 was cool. Yep. Used it it worked very well. It didn't crash like 7. Word perfect WOW. memories
Gary Kildall is remarkably receptive to Windows. Must have been tough to sit with a feeling you so missed the boat, after having built the operating system that micosoft originally copied to land the pc deal with ibm; that could have been him!
@bud389 or a 12 core i7 system with DUAL 6990's and 192GB of RAM with 4 x 1TB OCZ SSD's with 512MB/SEC read and write in raid and 3x 30 inch 3d monitors in eyefinity mode
@bud389 not as much if u showed them an 8 core amd athlon64 8 core bulldozer chipset with an HD 6990 4GB and a 5 2TB hdds in raid, WITH 36GB of DDR3 TRIPLE CHANNEL RAM @ PC3-17000
@upturnedkangaroo I suppose if we lived in a world with time travel I could probably think of better things to do than wow the ass of retired computer hacks...
I doubt I'd be wasting space bringing a macbook air with me....
Bringing a paperclip back to the 1870's would make you a multi-billionaire...and 99% of those end up in the trash!
@MumblingMickey Kinda like how MAC stole windows' address bar idea? And how they copied the navigation pane of windows XP in MAC OS X 10.3? Or how about the completel rip off of the command tab and system preferences? How about how Apple completely stole Xerox's GUI in the first place?
@bud389 Well the mouse was invented in 1964, so you'd have to assume it was patented with a purpose. And it was, for a GUI which came with it... unfortunately for Douglas Engelbert (the inventor) patents were not accepted on software in 1964.
So as it turns out the very first GUI was in fact invented by Douglas Engelbert at the ARC department in Stanford.
Xerox might have got it from there, or reinvented it without knowing. Which begs the question of how they also invented the mouse.
Engelbert hired someone to build the mouse, a guy by the name of Bill English. English went on to work for Xerox in 1972. Where it seems he reinvented the mouse. However this time it had a ball (which the original didn't)
In the meantime Engelbert got SFA from the whole thing... (well actually he was awarded a prize by MIT in the 90's for the advent)
But like the aircraft it was going to happen anyway with or without Xerox, English or Engelbert
My guess is any investigation of software or for that matter any discovery will show a long list of theft after and often before it enters the consumer marketplace. In software its practically the driving force... despite what we think of pirates without them their would be less advent...
I don't think its a bad thing really... as they say... " He who snoozes...loses! "
@MumblingMickey Except he didn't make a GRAPHICAL user interface, it was completely text based, so no, he didn't create the first GUI, that still belongs to Xerox. It's like saying that the person who invented black powder invented the gun.
I was born in 1990! So when my parents upgraded to Windows 98, they gave me their old Windows 3.1 PC. I still remember it from the couple of years that I used it as a kid before getting Windows 98, then switching to Mac.
Never had 3.0 Had to install it on a system at work, that didn't like 3.1 3.1 was much nicer to look at than 3.0 My preference back then was 3.11 (same as 3.1 but with network options).
Yes they are using them not windows-me but 98,95 even 3.1. Mainly people who collect pc's at the time these systems were out. If you have a p-1 system you can't use xp. Some like to use the older windows.
Yes they are using them not windows-me but 98,95 even 3.1. Mainly people who collect pc's at the time these systems were out. If you have a p-1 system you can't use xp. Some like to use the older windows.
Thinking back, it was pretty hopeless. You needed balls to put your faith in something crap like this even for a SME. Created more and new problems and headaches to begin with rather than solving or improving anything else.
What's interesting is that in this version, you can change the window colour, yet in XP it's just blue or green or silver, but in Vista (and 7 probably, I don't have a 7 yet) you can change it again.
@00doowi Yep the youngsters of today who do Information Technology have missed out. I was lucky enough to start off with an IBM XT machine, Monochrome Monitor and a very early version of DOS. Next machine was a Windows 3.1 machine :)
@BensoftMedia Well 3.0 was the first popular Windows OS, and when you take out 1.0, 2.0 and ME, you have 7 good Windows versions...yes I am one of those people that liked Vista(as scandalous as it sounds).
@TheProgrammer That's the really amazing thing, isn't it? In 1990 this seemed state of the art to me. I think when I had seen screen shots of NeXTStep, all I could think of was "that's ugly!" I didn't understand the deeper implications. It is absolutely mind-blowing to realize there was already an OS out there that at its core was everything OS X is now.
Used to have Win 3 on my first proper PC which was an 8086 which to be honest loaded windows quicker than my current quad core. Although Windows back then was not the Operating System it was a program, MS- DOS or similar was the OS so probably not a good comparison. Still, makes me feel old.
what he said at the end is a lie, windows 3.0 does NOT require at least a 286. i'm surprised margaret didn't jump in. maybe she did but the video cut off. it will run fine in real mode on an 8086 or 8088.
@PEnDuLuMDeLuX Yes, there were a few. id Software was one of the most popular game makers back in the day, and Wolfenstein 3D, released in 1992, was one of the first successful 3d third-person shooters.
I love the look on her face as Gary asks the question at 4:21. She's having the same reaction Borat had when he was told American women could choose who they sleep with.
Now that I think about it, we really did hit one hell of a computer technology boom in the '90s. Before that decade, growth was kinda slow compared to its current pace.
@loldotalol379 Back then, we used computers just for playing games. Er, that's what I used mine for anyway, lol. I had Windows 3.11, though, not 3.0. But they were pretty much the same.
Holy shit. They let women style their hair like that back then?
