This is what happens when one flies over the cuckoo's nest. No way really to judge this kind of music because 'anything goes': no way to judge its 'beauty' because there is none. It's music for the mentally ill and mentally disturbed. John Cage blows...BIG TIME!!! People that can't write melodies and harmonies usually gravitate to this kind of nonsense. That's why his wife cheated on him...I think instead of water-boarding suspects, they should just play John Cage nonstop and the pep will SING!
@xVancha Absolutely not. It should exist...by all means. It shouldn't, however, be jammed/shoved down our throats as some sort of gem for it is not! And, that's no LIE!!!
@realmusicone But what if it's a gem in the mentally ill genre? I have yet to appreciate any death metal, but I'm aware some bands are better than others. Just as the best death metal bands sound terrible to me, perhaps the best mentally ill artist sounds terrible to you?
@xVancha Probably...if it's someone trying to imitate throat singing and sounding like they got something-else jammed down their throat, I'd think it's crap!
@realmusicone well yeah, it's all about the message with John Cage, as a lot of people say 'the mind and not the ear', although I do love a lot of his 'music'. But I understand why one studying music would be frustrated with having to study John Cage talking about sound. But on the other hand I love the 'disease' idealism linked to the prepared piano pieces and the micro-macro-cosmic structures. I think it is very thought provoking and it says whatever you need it to say.
Glad to not find as many haters as I'd expect from youtube. You don't have to like it but what gives you the right to act offended that other people like it? You are the reason all these radical artists make art like this, you treat it as an insult to your taste in music and your sensibilities. It's the fact that you're so adamant about being inside the box that made Cage's work worth doing. If you didn't exist he wouldn't be that famous.
@DickNixonArisen I thought so. Uncreative minds gotta try to pull a fast one. Well problem is NOT EVERYONE IS FOOLED. Not everyone buys into the heap of crap you're "trying" to sell. Only dummies buy! A sucker is born every second...haha!

@realmusicone If you would lose your job, degree and your life for criticizing a musician, maybe you need to find a different setting to work in. Somehow, it seems likely to me that you are overemphasizing the degree to which this particular musician is considered sacred ground. If your complaint is more with the establishment that has enshrined a person's work as gospel, then direct your complaints against that establishment and not against the person.
Haters are missing the point. Cage was about ripping out 'skill' and 'intellectualism' and 'vision' which reserved the judgement of music to an elite, packaged and sold music-as-product to people. Cage said "Fuck this shit, I'm going to space. Appreciate the simple joys of listening and making sounds from random stuff."
He was trolling classical purists and the music industry.
I don't know why you are all hating on John Cage. This performance may be a odd, but it is interesting and unique, and I, for one, enjoy it thoroughly (though I'll support sundiamond9252's notion on the preferred way to listen to it). John Cage produced some truly beautiful works in his time, some in a more traditional vein ("Dream" and "Six Melodies" come to mind) than others, and I firmly believe that the man was a genius. You don't have to be a pseudo-intellectual to appreciate his work.
I've come to the conclusion that people no longer understand good music from random sound. It frustrates me to see that the tradition from Handel to Bach to Beethoven to Stravinsky ends up here. This is insanity. I'd put Lady Gaga above John Cage.
@dalecampbl9 You are so ignorant and you are showing your stupidness. John Cage is one of the most genius musician for one reason. No other compositor creates that much energy in a song. Go and listen to 4'33 in a real orchestral and feel the amount of tension it is created in the room. It makes you uncomfortable, and that what's make him a genius. Lady gaga uses three easy electro chords and makes a song. John cage is a genius so as malevitch in painting. Same Style.
@HolyGK Go ahead and walk through a mine field in the middle east and feel the tension that creates, moron. Yes, Lady GAGA uses 3 electro chords to acquire millions of fans while this idiot John Cage (i'm sure he's knows his music theory) decides to compose this shit. Harmony is there. Harmony is a requirement for music... it's the very definition of music, in layman's terms. Any musician will tell you harmony is nonexistent without melody. You harmonize something, not "melodize." So, it's not music.
@finalrasenganshinobi oh I see what you are saying. well john cage or any great musician will tell you to not go look in a fucking dictionary for the definition of music. hahah. Thats the problem with music. Too many labels and politics. ANYTHING can be art. ANYTHING can be music. as cheesy as it sounds, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. do you buy your art from target?..
In my opinion, this isn't necessarily a matter of playing music, but rather, playing in the sense of the way a child plays with a ball. The child doesn't play with the ball in a specific way to make it look appealing to either himself or others, he plays with it just simply to play with it. So for those of you who don't "understand", there truly is nothing TO understand, except that... Well, there's nothing to understand...
My Rose has left me I'm in a mood She's run off to Kenya With the bloke from Allied Carpets But she wasn't immunized And that's a legal requirement She'd been getting awfully slapdash Since we bought that new hearth-rug. Oh Rose how we miss you... But where are you now? Alone with your salesman - YOU ADULTEROUS COW!!!
He looks insane- and, yes, I think he must be quite insane. Monteverdi through to Mahler, music elevated the human spirit with its sublime beauty, but Postmodern music seems to glory is weirdness and ugliness.
Cage doing interesting work interrupted by Plimpton sounding like an idiot (he was not but here he is) and then it goes to fireworks....not very good but a moment of Cage uniquely.
@itssavvyandstuff why not ask him instead of looking dumb on here? he answers tumblr questions (generally) and has vowed to be a nice person (within reason)
@hollium I've asked him things on tumblr before. He's never responded to me, and I don't want to waste his time with silly questions about why he favourited YouTube videos
@DorianMalone0 ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the humanity
I don't know anyone who would listen to John Cage for aesthetic pleasure. I prefer funky house, that's my electronic scene.
HOWEVER! And this is important to not, John Cage isn't famous for producing aesthetically pleasing sounds. He's famous for revolutionizing electronic music. He's famous for experimenting. He's famous for studying and listening to sounds.
@Valkyriefury I listen to Cage constantly as I do find it aesthetically pleasing. I love his use of sounds and silence and i admire him for his philosophy on what music can be and I'm influenced to just appreciate sounds for what they are. For example, "I don't hear the music I write: I write in order to hear the music I haven't yet heard". Have you heard any of his 3 constructions? Listen to 3rd Construction, you may find that to be more pleasing to listen to.
@Valkyriefury i listen to his music a lot. its wonderful. he composed music for 50-60 years, there is a probably a piece of his that you might even like. check it out.
There are so many interesting sounds in this video! Cage loved sound. Music has a sonority and so does this. Its actually pretty fascinating how unique the sounds are!
@DoctorUnken Great comment, finally someone who has a right on John Cage, this is not music is garbage and do not come to talk about the usual bullshit, which sounds new music research music and musical research? if you want to hear new music, progressive look for it on youtube Lucio Battisti "LATIN SOUL "great Italian singer avant-garde experimental music real!
@nadar56 lucio battisti died in 1998 (6 years after john cage died). how is he new music? also i would venture to guess that lucio battisti (along with battiato, rocchi, area, and other italian prog musicians) were influenced by john cage.
john cage is a joke.he's a joke among laymen and musicians alike. His whole career he composed maybe two works that were even intriguing. Disagree with me? Well very few others do. Milton Babbitt has more fans than this guy.
@khbgkh Your comment sounds completely misinformed. John Cage is not a joke, he may seem so because he doesn't fit into the recent history of commodifying and commercializing music - which has caused a hegemonic and homogenous notion of sound, where most people can't even bare listening to music outside of their own communities/country/cultures. You are upset because he is challenging/disorienting your notion of sound and music, which you are resisting to open your ears up to.
@khbgkh Well, someone had to do the avantgarde things so laymen would have something new to listen to and musicians would have some new boundaries for their creation, dude.
@khbgkh he wrote hundreds of pieces, certainly you could find many more than 2 that are interesting. and cage is definitely much more popular and still much more influential than babbitt. thats a fact.
@SrDisorden George Plimpton always professes to know what he is talking about; he was a resident expert on everything. In this case, he knows absolutely nothing.
Idiots.

It was about his discoveries, not his music.
Valkyriefury 9 months ago
@Valkyriefury I listen to Cage constantly as I do find it aesthetically pleasing. I love his use of sounds and silence and i admire him for his philosophy on what music can be and I'm influenced to just appreciate sounds for what they are. For example, "I don't hear the music I write: I write in order to hear the music I haven't yet heard". Have you heard any of his 3 constructions? Listen to 3rd Construction, you may find that to be more pleasing to listen to.
iluvperkushun 9 months ago
@Valkyriefury i listen to his music a lot. its wonderful. he composed music for 50-60 years, there is a probably a piece of his that you might even like. check it out.

There are so many interesting sounds in this video! Cage loved sound. Music has a sonority and so does this. Its actually pretty fascinating how unique the sounds are!

DoctorUnken 11 months ago
@DoctorUnken Great comment, finally someone who has a right on John Cage, this is not music is garbage and do not come to talk about the usual bullshit, which sounds new music research music and musical research? if you want to hear new music, progressive look for it on youtube Lucio Battisti "LATIN SOUL "great Italian singer avant-garde experimental music real!
nadar56 10 months ago
@nadar56 lucio battisti died in 1998 (6 years after john cage died). how is he new music? also i would venture to guess that lucio battisti (along with battiato, rocchi, area, and other italian prog musicians) were influenced by john cage.
gregasterisk 6 months ago
@DoctorUnken its only weird if you have a closed mind (and ears).
gregasterisk 6 months ago
Hey, I remember when this first aired. This would have been the first time I ever heard John Cage's music.
Kohntarkosz 11 months ago
john cage is a joke.he's a joke among laymen and musicians alike. His whole career he composed maybe two works that were even intriguing. Disagree with me? Well very few others do. Milton Babbitt has more fans than this guy.
khbgkh 11 months ago
@khbgkh Your comment sounds completely misinformed. John Cage is not a joke, he may seem so because he doesn't fit into the recent history of commodifying and commercializing music - which has caused a hegemonic and homogenous notion of sound, where most people can't even bare listening to music outside of their own communities/country/cultures. You are upset because he is challenging/disorienting your notion of sound and music, which you are resisting to open your ears up to.

@khbgkh Well, someone had to do the avantgarde things so laymen would have something new to listen to and musicians would have some new boundaries for their creation, dude.
premavansmuuf 9 months ago
@khbgkh he wrote hundreds of pieces, certainly you could find many more than 2 that are interesting. and cage is definitely much more popular and still much more influential than babbitt. thats a fact.
