As an Econ major in college, I learned that the Economists first worked for the Kings and Queens. In history, they advised them to make certain that there were a tremendous amount of people in poverty so that they would always have cheap labor. So, I no longer listen to most of those people.

As an accounting major (now CPA) who got his butt kicked in intermediate price theory, I've always regarded PhD economist with reverent awe and, ceteris paribus, have held that economics is the truest descriptor of large group human behavior. Regardless of their origins, in our current world, were I a president, a candidate, or a king, I would surround myself with the best and brightest I could find and hope thereby not to make stupid policy blunders.

Two things: Hilary is right about economists. They are more often wrong than right. F.i. almost all US economists will tell you that the policies in Scandinavia are dangerous socialism. Yet Sweden, Denmark and Finland are among the richest countries in the world. Thanks to those policies.

Secondly: Obama is right on this one. ONLY massive investments in research and development of new energy sources, will solve the problem long term. A tax rebate will be akin to peeing in your pants to be warm

Scandinavia countries have some of the highest suicide rates in the world. Because of the incredibly high taxes to fund socialism, especially taxes on foreign imports, most people are as in debt as most US dentists, which as a profession, has one of the highest suicide rates as well. I'd call that pretty dangerous.

Sorry - you are entitled to your own opinions, but not your own set of facts. According to the WHO stats on the suicide rate pr. 100.000, Finland is no. 16. Denmark no. 27. Sweden no. 31. Norway no. 41. (US is 43 and UK 62).

Many of the countries with much higher suicide rates have much, much lower taxes.

Oh - and Sweden, Finland and Denmark are parts of the EU - so the import taxes are heavily regulated.

The comment is just another example of people believing the scare stories.

But - to be fair to you - two decades ago, we did have very high suicide rates.

They have been falling constantly since then. And you know what: That has a lot to do with a national plan to fight suicides, where schools, doctors, youth workers etc are schooled to recognize symptoms in at-risk youth + restricting the sale of a popular painkiller.

When the programme was launched, I saw it as a nanny state thing. But it worked very well. Others could - should - learn from that approach.

No. 16 is one of the highest rates - the ex USSR has most of the higher ones. Some of my personal experience is dated - when I was in Iceland a US car cost 3 times as much; ditto liquor. Many of the younger adults I knew were sunk in debt and alcoholism. What's the average tax rate in the socialist EU? I'm lucky to have higher than average earnings and I paid about 18% taking standard deductions. I own my farm and have no debt and I'm happy, maybe in spite my country's leadership.

If you're going to talk debt, no nation is more in debt, on a national and an individual level, than the United States. That is directly related to cutting taxes and promoting a consumption culture because its good for business.
