Love and War has motivated the human race for thousands of years. It's where we excel and where most of our strength comes from. Peace is a favorable albeit perilous ideal and one which I fear will never come to pass.
This song is a response to "If" by Rudyard Kipling, the most popular poem in the English language. "If" expresses sentiments that inflenced many young men who were killed in the first World War. One of these was Kipling's own son, Jack. Yet "If" still appeals to many people. Afterwards Kipling had a change of heart and wrote "If they ask you why we died, tell them that out fathers lied".
Although Kipling pulled strings to get his son to the war, you can hardly say that this song is an answer to his poem IF. The poem is about being true to yourself and having courage to take on life whatever comes on your path.
There is a difference between reference and response or answer. A response or answer is having a reaction to whatever is asked or stated. I read the poem and it's difficult to call this song a response because there is nothing in the poem that says : war is glorious and if you believe that you'll be a hero.
Maybe Whittaker stated this song to be a reply to the poem but in my view it is not.
Real Witches setting up fake witches, Zionists setting up Jews, Now CIA/NSA/MI5 setting up Arabs. Do your homework and you won't believe in war anymore.
Nonsense - Do you think, for example, that it wasn't necessary to stop the Nazis? Or wrest control of the U.S. from the English? Don&'t spout bullshit - study history.
superb and thought prevoking song.great stuff..takes me back to my childhood when my dad usedto play roger wittaker, neil diamond,ELO,glen cambel, all of who I now love..music wassomuch better then...dont get me wrong there are some amazing artists present day but the oldies are the best..
I think the song is mainly just about living in the part of the past that "should have been". If I could have the time again ...
But then that doesn't match so well with the start. So maybe it's about "two ifs"?
Cause and effect first, then for most of the song, wasting time wishing things had been otherwise.

Did Roger write this song based on his army service fighting the Mau Mau in Kenya?

@NKismynextgoal So he doesn't believe in "If" any more - but that is not a reference to Kipling's poem "If"? What does he mean then?

Who would have believed the words "I don't believe in If anymore" could be rendered so melodically...

I've loved Roger Whittaker since I was a little child of 4 years.
