This is historical horseshit! The move depicts Babington actually accousting Elizabeth and drawing a gun on her. In reality none of the events depicted in this scene actually happened. While Babington plotted an assasination attempt on the Queen, he never came close to carrying it out and was betrayed by co-conspirators before he could do it. So sad that people see this and think they are getting "history".
Watch "Elizabeth R" with Glenda Jackson for a truer depiction of events.
To this day no one can definitively prove that Mary had any part of the Babington plot. Now people who show Elizabeth's side make her out to be vindictive, while those who support Mary's side see her as an innocent pawn. I like to think all this could have gone on w/o her knowing of it. I mean she was locked away for years, if she wanted Elizabeth dead she could have done it earlier. Also, how can she be tried for treason if she is not even an English subject; she was the Queen of SCOTLAND!!
@clancybkj Treason is defined as the act of plotting to overthrow one's government, to harm or kill its sovereign, or the violation of allegiance to one's sovereign or to one's state.
Queen Mary of Scotland was deemed to be plotting to replace Elizabeth as Queen of England, by means of assassination; hence she was tried for treason. And it's generally accepted that Elizabeth didn't want Mary to be executed, but was given no other choice.
It had to have been gut-wrenching for Elizabeth to sing Mary Stuart's death warrant. If you think about it, Elizabeth knew that if she signed Mary Stuart's death warrant, it would send seismic waves through out Catholic Europe and put her ( Elizabeth) more in the lines of asassination.
I find that bitterly ironic. Elizabeth cared more about her life than Mary cared about that of Elizabeth's. go figure, eh? I mean, Mary had no problems with regicide and Elizabeth understood the value of the life of a fellow sovereign so much more. Mary did nothing but cause trouble and leave a path of blood behind her wherever she went.
@TheNuharoo I never though if it that way. Didn't mean to offend you if I did. I guess I shouldn't of said gut-wrenching but maybe nerve-wracking? She had the sake of her country to worry about. And anytime a monarch had to sign a death warrant there was always a pro and a con. So Elizabeth did know that if she signed Mary Stuart's death warrant, there would be whole lot more pressure on Elizabeth because Catholic Europe hated her. Elizabeth and Mary Stuart didn't care for each other.
Yeah, I think gut wrenching is the word and when you read about Mary Stuart, France didn't want her, her own son didn't want her in Scotland, the Scottish nobles didn't want her and Spain was only using her as an excuse to declare war on Elizabeth. Elizabeth worried more about the consequences than Mary ever did. On the other hand, Mary would have butchered the Protestants (along with the rest of England) if Elizabeth had been killed.
@TheNuharoo Oh puhlease. Mary, though given a county lady's life, was held captive and shoved around the inlands of England for 19 years. She had to leave her home, her son, and risked it all to ask help from her cousin who treated her already like a criminal. Bitches stay hypocritical and I'm not even Catholic; can't stand their Faux Christanity, but how many of them died under Henry's hand so he could fuck around with Anne while he tried to drag C of A through the dirt? E1 was no better..
not true any of these details in this movie. there was never really any concrete evidance that the queen of Scots had anything to do with plots to assassinate the queen. I would not be surprised if the queens counsel plotted to get rid of her and create false testimonies and evidence against her. even so the queen should have shown mercey she had already locked up the girl with her maids, the same mercey her half sister showed to her before she died as she knew Elizabeth was apposed to her rule
@michael31538 Quite the contrary...there was proof of treason from Mary, Queen of Scotts. Elizabeth was shown mercy because there was was no proof against her with regard to Wyatts rebellion. As a matter of fact right up until he was burned he exonerated Elizabeth.
Blanchett captures the look of strength and ethereal beauty like no other. You can see the emotions flowing from her eyes going from fearing to fearless as the weapon is pointed directly at her. For not saying anything at all she manages to put on a very powerful performance.
Who is the guy who came to tell Mary of her arrest? By the time of the Babington plot, Mary was in the custody of Paulet, I believe. He can hardly be called a traitor; he owed Mary no loyalty.
I saw this in History the other day. Even though it might not be accurate, it was still an amazing movie!! :D I was sitting in class tweeting about it all day. Hahah :) @youknowthat1kid
okay smart ass...no one ever said this movie was inacurate. BTw mary stuart would have gotten rid of all the protestants if she came to power...look at wat Mary tudor did...and do some research on mary stuart...she made a mock up of being queen of scotland..hence the reason she ran off to england
am i right that it took 2 blows to cut her head off 1 missed and hit the back of her head the other blow severed her neck but left some skin hanging and the execututioner used the axe to saw it off ew...
The soundtrack for this movie pissed me off! both songs used in this scene ( the attempted assassination and when Mary here's about the failure) are not available. Does anyone know where I can get these?
It was for the Babington plot that Mary was executed.
And one historical mistake was that Philip did not invade over Mary he invaded after the bull of excommunication I think. I may be wrong. Sorry if i am. It was probably both
lol Racism in england but this time be-heading them

Based on portraits I've seen of Mary Stuart, the actress portraying her actually looks like her a little.

At the 2:43 mark she looks more like the Lady Galadriel then Elizabeth. Know sweet Elizabeth that your mother Anna is Fiercely proud of you.

TRASH! NONSENSE! RUBBISHY, BORING FICTION!
Elizabeth was not a beautiful young woman, she was an old hag by this time!
She was never shot at!
The plot to put Mary on the throne came for a reason. She and Burghley and Walsingham persecuted and murdered Catholics.
Why do they always show everybody worshipping her?
And Mary Stuart here is GROTESQUE!
She was reknowned for a great beauty and she did not speak with a silly fake Scots accent! She was brought up in France.
