I found these videos the other day, and reading your parts list (about what I expected) and cost (less than I feared), I think I want to do this. The Borg have always been the most feared of all ST enemies, and who doesn't want to inspire fear in geeks! Thanks for sharing.
@kevinromaine It was a blast making the costumes. What I enjoyed most is that I didn't have to replicate anything; I just got to use my imagination and wing it as I went. The most difficult part of making these costumes is ensuring that they're functional, ie., having easy pee pee access. :) Have fun and share your results once you're done! :)
Your Borg costumes are truly the best I've ever seen. I'm thinking of going as a Borg this yr for Halloween but I'm not creative enough to fabricate something this amazing. Noticed that you commented last Aug about making the costumes to sell... how's that going?
@hollyspry Sorry for the late reply. The new suits are looking awesome. I took a completely different approach and based them on a new fibreglass design. They assemble/disassemble easier and they're a lot sturdier than before. The final touches are still being worked out (electronics, voice modulation, etc...) so once I'm complete, I'll post more videos, this time in HD so that the more detail is revealed.
This is absolutely the most authentic homemade Borg costume I have ever seen! You look like you came straight out of the TV show! I could have sworn you were an extra that was used as a Borg Drone for TNG! lol
@sgtmyers88 Thank you so much! I actually wasn't content with these suits. They're more of the old school Borg look. The new ones look a lot meaner and the makeup is a lot more organic and less "Bela Lugosi". lol. Vids will be up once the final touches are complete.
There are voice modulators available, but incorporating them into the costume without using some sort of obstructive microphone is a challenge, but indeed possible. As for the costumes themselves, I'm in the midst of designing more practical costumes that are less tailored and more general in size, ie: small, medium, large, etc., thus making it easier to sell to the public. The new costumes will be completely custom and independent of pre-fabricated parts. All parts will be cast from scratch.
Cool costume, it looks great! How hard is it/does it cost to make? I'd love to make one but I haven't found any guides yet and I'm not ambitious enough to try without some kind of guide!
@Shintsu2 Hey there, I'm not sure if it's this video or my other Borg Costume video, but I posted the instructions somewhere in the thread. It may take a bit of time to find it, but it's there. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll repost it at the top of the thread. Hell, maybe I should do that anyway. lol. Cheers, and thanks for the compliment.
@jaykenstein Ah, I found the comments with the parts list - they're on Page 5. So are there any tips you could provide when making the costume from your experience on making two of them? Additionally - wouldn't it be cool if there was some way to have that Borg voice too? I guess the only way that could be achieved is by attaching speakers somewhere on the suit and playing sound clips of the Borg talking their lines - or having a remote mic where someone else uses a computer to alter their voice
@Shintsu2 The best advice I can give is to make one section at a time and don't be concerned with symmetry. No two Borg are identical nor are they symmetrical. Design one section at a time and connect each section with functionality in mind. Make sure to take measurements and draw out your design first. The ladies will appreciate a suit that allows them to use the facilities without taking an hour to dismantle the costume. Ask my girlfriend, I neglected this concept when I made hers. lol
looks fantastic when i eventually make mine i'll post a video of it but may take me some time as this is the first time i've done anything like this :D
lol. Yeah, I was on some pretty heavy pain meds at the time for a broken foot. I wasn't really 'all there' when this video was shot. I designed and built the suit and couldn't find my own the power switch. lol.
It was unconscious at the time because I had a broken foot. I'm not sure if you can see in the video, but I had a plaster walking cast on my left foot which was broken and a spare plastic walking cast on my good foot. So, it was naturally cumbersome to walk around.
I'm actually in the final stages of redeveloping the costumes. I'm still working out the licensing details because I know that I need permission in order to sell Borg replicas. Once I find out more, I'll post more information to all subscribers. Thanks again!
at the start of the video I was expecting that guy to kick down that door and make a very violent entrance. obviously my standards are way too high. Lol
Honestly, not much at all. About $150 Canadian all together for both costumes. I just collected stuff from hardware stores and surplus stores. I bought stuff without really knowing what I was going to do with it...so I even have a lot of weird pieces left over that weren't even used. lol.
The first one took a while to make because I designed it as I made it. I really had no clue what I was doing in the beginning but I had to make it functional as well as aesthetic. I made my girlfriends first and that one took about 40 hours to make but mine only took about 15 hours since I figured out what I was doing. :)
Was wondering if you would mind making me one if I give you the size and everything. And if so how much does it cost? Where are you located so I can know if I can pick it up or if I have to pay for shipping?
Wondering if you can make me one if I give you my sizes. How much do you charge? Are you located nearby where I can pick it up or must I do shipping? Your suit is really awesome man.
What type of suit is all the equipment attached to? Is everything attached as in one piece or is it several units that are plugged together? It's over the top and you belong to the collective. I have created a rush borg costume an it's so so,not a great one like yours. You should make them and sell them!!!
Thanks! The base is a two piece lycra suit (top and bottom) to make bio breaks a bit easier. I hot glued small pieces of velcro onto the pants and top to make sure that the armor stayed in place nicely and was able to come off easy. It's important not to put too much velcro on because you can limit your mobility once your armor is on. And yeah, all of the pieces are separate, though the shoulders and the upper arm pieces are attached to stiffen the look of the upper body.
Arm Cannons: 3" diameter PVC plumbing pipe, 1/2" diameter cable tidy, LED's, AA battery packs, momentary switches, any kind of wire, matt black spray paint, glue gun
Helmets: Bald caps, plaster bandage, LED's, AA battery packs, 1/2" diameter cable tidy, wire, misc electronic looking stuff that you can attach wiring to, bendy funnel spouts, matt black spray paint, glue gun.
Armor: Plating from hockey/football/lacrosse armor, velcro, electrical ground connectors, 1/2" diameter cable tidy, air cast walking boots, foam latex (for legs and arms), steel wrist protectors, leather corsets, long sleeved black lycra sports shirts, white water based makeup, matt black spray paint.
I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of other stuff, but that's what I can remember off the top of my head. Just be creative and improvise along the way. The trick is to keep the costume functional. :)
I fucking love the Borg. You sir are an answer to my prayers. This is the first legit Borg costume I've seen in awhile.
