@KulakxFilms How do you know that? Sorry, I am not saying I don't believe you but it is quite a hefty claim, or am I just missing something very obvious xD
No, Damn it! They should get an unknown cast like they did in LOTR Instead of these pre-existing jokes. One important key to LOTR's success was the cast was perfectly fitted for their roles, because most the actors aren't tied to any well known past performances. Thus they couldn't be judged based on their previous projects and made the movies that much more epic.
Well, Guillermo del Toro left the production this past May...so Peter Jackson is producing, co-writing AND directing this movie! It's still in pre-production, it seems, but it looks like things are finally getting under way.
As much as I adore James McAvoy, I don't like the idea of him playing Bilbo. I think one of the many reasons that Lord of the Rings was so successful was that there weren't really any huge actors in there. Don't get me wrong, some were obviously well known, like Hugo Weaving, Ian Mckellen etc, but still not exactly 'A-List' regarded.
I prefer the idea of a new-coming actor for Bilbo, as the audience wont be hyped up just because of a 'huge name', and can concentrate more on the film itself.
Anybody who thinks Guillermo Del Toro is gonna screw The Hobbit up, has not seen enough of his movies. The man is brilliant. He's a great story teller. He is working well within his genre of films and has perhaps made some innovations in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre.

@ChristBurner I agree with you about Hollywood. But listening to some of Del Torro's interviews he says he will be focusing more on being accurate than any thing else. From what I have heard from Del Torro I can assume he knows whathe's getting into and is taking it very very cautiously. But yes, you never know. I'll be there opening day regardless.

I know he is going to do a fantastic job but I still have alot of fear of certain actors not returning and the feel changing.
@UsherMoore: because "the Hobbit" takes place some 60 years before "The Lord of the Rings", when Bilbo was in his Fifties. As hobbits age differently to humans, this would mean he would look like a man in is early 30s. How do you imagine Ian Holm should play a guy who is less than half his age? Do it all by CGI? Might look a little strange.
Just in case you haven't read this statement the about 100 times it has been made before.
Everything is possible these days, i just think that he's the man for the job, or at least someone who looks just like him... but, im sure that P.Jackson & Del Torro knows what they'r doing :)
you are correct, McAvoy does not look like Bilbo in the original trilogy, but he looks a lot like Elijah Wood. Therefore, to me it would be believable that he would be Frodo's uncle.
some news to whom it may concern. gandals is back elrond is back gollum is back. and they will start with the white council for those who know what that is. and the journey of gandalf to dol guldur. ending in the hobbit.
He's seventy eight - he did also have cancer a few years ago - I mean, it would be amazing if he could be Bilbo don't get me wrong, but for whatever reason he doesn't want to. Also at the beginning of the Hobbit Bilbo is 66 I think, isn't he - which is like 40ish in human years.
actually he was 50 and 51 at the end, I know that makes it worse for me, but I hate when people change actors for the same characters, that is why the Hunt for Gollum sucked
Yeah I wish Ian Holm could carry on his role cause he perfected Bilbo in the LOTR and was the greatest person they used but he's too old now... Pity...
TOLKIEN AND MIDDLE EARTH FOREVER!!!
I also hope they release 'The Silmarillion' which is all before these about the beginning of middle earth etc... Which would be totally kickass if they keep the feel from LOTR...
@JaceRendal How could that be Peter Jackson if they ask him if he would be working closely with Peter Jackson? No dude, that's Guillermo del Toro, who directed the Hell Boy movies. Jackson could not have named a better director for the 2 Hobbit Movies. Del Toro has always executed tremendously as a director, and loves to REALLY tell the story in a tasteful an riveting manner. I am very excited about this project.
Of course McAvoy.. I mean what did Tolkien know creating adult heroes. Didn't he know that teenagers won't buy as much popcorn if they have to watch boring grownups? Why not find roles for Paris Hilton and Lady GaGa. And how about that kid from high school musical as Gandalf? And, instead of BagEnd, Bilbo could be living in Laguna Beach and maybe have a really cool Porsche. And instead of finding the ring , maybe he can find a gift certificate to Neiman Marcus for a free shopping spree...
God I hope James won't play such a stupid franchise like Tolkien, it will ruin his career. He needs to play roles that have some sort of intelligence behind them, to match his own.
He did say in another clip that it will be 2 movies, the 1st one will be his style then he said the second movie will transition it self to Peter Jackson's style of Directing...He said he was excited about that.
So it makes me think that Maybe the 1st movie will be Narrated by the Original Bilbo on Lord of the Rings and have another actor play his character.
So will it be like as if we were imagining it through a young hobbits point of view?
Makes sense because the Hobbit was always for kids.
actually, bilbo is 50 and wih hobbits that is about our age 20-30, it's their coming of age and bilbo was the age that frodo was when he went on his adventure.
Dont forget that Peter Jackson himself CHOSE del Toro to work with the movie, to produce him on an outstanding budget and has been wanting to work with him for years. So there is something in this arangement, cuz jackson is putting his baby into his hands and wants to see a different product, one that he wouldnt do.
the scenery, the actors are going to be the same. its the feeling that u get from the movie thats going to be different, which is perfect, because lort is a huge emotional struggle for the characters, the plot of the hobbit itself cannot compete with that of lort in this point. what makes the hobbit good close to lort is its tinge of fairy tale, its supposed to be an exiting adventure, the sort of which bilbo will want to go again, and that is the type Toro manages to portray really well.
Jackson did an awesome job, and the movie ended up even better than the book, but he did make it his own and not tolkiens! the amount of poetic liberty taken was amazing, even for movie adaptation standards.
Peter Jackson is a way better director then del toro... Hellboy movies whas nothing special, Jackson put an incredible amount of detail to the landscape of middle earth in LOTR and he is a great director... if del Toro fails making The Hobbit as good as LOTR i am going to freak out.
I don't think King Kong was very good eiether but that doesn't mean Peter Jackson's not a good director. Guillermo del toro is a good director also and Peter Jackson admires his work so that has to count for something. I loved Pan's labyrinth and The devil's backbone so I think he will make this great.

I agree! i want peter jackson directing, not this idiot... this film should be an extension of the others. with an extended edition 4 disc dvd.
"i'll have to tranform it to make it my own" typical brainless selfish hollywood bastard.
Peter Jackson always made the film as if it were Tolkein's, not his. If he transforms the flawless works of Peter Jackson, he will, inevitabley, mess it up.
Your misunderstanding what he is saying. He is not saying that he wont stay true to Tolkiens work,he is saying that he will use his own style more than Peters.Peter didnt just do it Tolkiens way. How could he? He used his own style, check the behind the scenes footage of LOTR and youll know what I mean. Del Torro will use his own style of filming and why shouldnt he?! Peter didnt hire him to make it so that he could copy himself now did he?Del Torro also loves Tolkiens books, hell show it justice
@Gonasay That's stupid of you to say, you haven't even seen what he's going to do and you're already ripping on him. He's done a great job in other movies. They would not have given him the chance to direct this movie had he been a brainless hollywood director. Del Toro is great and if anybody else had to direct the hobbit other than Peter Jackson I'm glad it's him.
if Peter Jackson doesn't do it, it shouldn't be done AT ALL. It was Tolkein's life work, and so it should be Peter Jackson's... nobody else can do it justice.
oh dear. this guys probli gona ruin the hobbit... it should feel like part of the same film... ian holm, ian mckellen, andy serkis, hugo weaving etc...
u see a lot of things in LOTR that link to the hobbit, u see bilbo in golums cave, u see thorin's map, the 3 petrified trolls etc. this guys gona have to pay extreme attention to detail to get it right
He said in an interview that the first hobbit film will be very much in his style, his interpretation etc, but the second film hes going to interpret jacksons style so it feels it is leading into LOTR.
Yes! I am sooooo for James Mcavoy to be the Hobbit he has a hobbit face and he was a good actor as the goat guy in the lion the with and wardrope movie! sorry don't know the actual names jeje
i have a great feeling about this. the hobbit has a much defferent feel than the lord of the rings books and it will be great to see another vision of middle earth, particularly from the creator of "Pan's Labarynth". plus peter jackson is probably still burnt out on hobbits and wizards after the herculean effort of the 3 Lord of the Rings movies.
i hope he will do a good job, Peter is a genious, i dont know if that guy can get up to that leverl. let's pray that the Hobbit will be as good if not better than the LOTR, one of the best movies ever made
i wonder if Peter jackson is going to add the scenes with tom bombadil & the battle scenes with Elendil that were shown briefly in the beginning of the Fellowship of the Rings.
I look forward to seeing what Guillermo del Toro brings to the story. Both the Hellboy movies were great fun. He is a capable story teller. Sounds like a great fit to me.
Del Toro says that shootings and everything will be like Peter Jackson's stuff. And I heared that Peter Jackson is in the crew ,too with Del Toro. And I heared Andy Sarkis will be Gollum and Ian McKellen will be Gandalf again. And McAvoy is the best actor who can play Bilbo so this will be a great movie!
We are missing the main point here. Jackson CHOSE del Toro. He would not have chosen him if he did not have faith that he would create an amazing prequel to LOTR. This man directed both Hellboys, Blade II, and let's not forget Pan's Labyrinth. He won't fail "The Hobbit".
obviously it won't be the exact same but Toro did say he wanted to make it as much his own without ruining the world that was made before. I look forward to seeing the similarities but more the differences. I mean common people, the director switch is a pretty good match, and tame at that. Its not like it would be if they decided to let Tom Burton or Woody Alen direct it! LOL!
Advice: for those havent seen toro movs: watch Pans Lab and Helboy and think of LOTR film feel. Hobit is gona be gret
Let Burton stick with more bizarre fare like ... anything by Lewis Carrol but not Tolkien. I trust Del Toro and think his past work indicates a better ability to translate Tolkien's style. Of course that's just my opinion.
There is a major factor to Del Toro making the hobbit.
-They have finally decided to do the film, AND another connecting film to the trilogy from the hobbit. This means that Del Toro has a boundary. If it was not connected he would most likely be free to make it whatever he wanted. but thats not the case; the boundary is that he has to keep a 'seemless' transition between the two movies meaning he will purposely keep all movies similar. His and Jacksons movies.
you people are retarded del toro will bring a new fresh look and peter jackson will be just as much part of these movies as he was with the trilogy.......
i know, people seem to be missing the point of using del toro, some people don't really get why they chose him, its funny really. he is perfect for the hobbit, its a really wise decision they made.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I would be content if peter jackson never touched LOTR again. I hear that he wants to make the hobit into somr king of part horror movie part inro to his films. They were good films but not definitive. Like any myth the tale is biffer then one director.
you might be able to get away with casting som1 else for bilbo BUT NOT GANDALF!!!! he's ageless so it doesn't make sense that itd be played by som1 else....he wouldnt look different!!!!
Wow this breaks my heart, if peter jackson isnt directing/ Writing the hobbit PLUS the original Bilbo and Gandalf arnt in it A it wont make sense and B it will suck it should just not be made if its not gonna be true to the Lord of the Rings thats already changed so many people
the original bilbo SUX and it wont be in movie anyway Jan MCkellen(gandalf) will be in the movie and Viggo Mortensen(aragorn ) too and saruman too so stay calm
WHAT why do you think jackson should be doing it? it would be the same thing over again. del toro is perfect have you ever seen any of his movies? he is the guy for the job. no doubt i would put money on it.
Its supposed to be the same thing again because thats what it is. its a different story but the same world, so if there was a different director heaps of things would change cos he is trying to make it his own.. so the continuity wouldnt be good. Look at harry potter they have had 4 separate directors in the series and you can tell cos actors and sets and costumes change like every movie. but no i havent seen any of del toros movies so yeah im sure hell be fine its just id prefer Jackson
But that is where you are wrong, i understand what you are saying about different stories, same world but infact the world is very different in the hobbit. sure its still middle earth, but alot changed in that gap between the hobbit and rings. its a much smaller tale, more fairtale like than the huge epic lord of the rings is. its a more smaller feel, sure it has its moments, but its more like a little adventure, so really the worlds are different. Check out pan's labyrinth, and the orphanage.
thats money for you...hollywood clowns think you cant sell a film unless someone young and "hot" plays them...
i hate personnel changes as well...sometimes it cant be helped in the case of a death of an actor...Dumbledore, and the cookie lady from the Matrix....though more often than not its just stupid...eg; Saavik from Star Trek..
yeah he cant be Bilbo. Bilbo's a middle aged hobbit. Hes 50 not 25! I think that Ian holm(Bilbo in LOTR) would make a great Bilbo. I would also accept martin freeman (main guy in hitcher hikers guide to the galaxy) he looks hobbity enough and he also is closer to the age.
youre preaching to the converted here mate!..i hope jackson just decides to do it himself..i know alot of folks werent happy with his style...(and the tom bombadil thing..--he really DOESNT add to the story)
but he should just do it..and have Holm do it too!
lol u r right! bad typo I always confuse Benicio with Guillermo after all they have the same last name, so let me correct myself. Guillermo sucks so far, but I seriously hope he proves me wrong with The Hobbit adaptation, I don't want that the LOTR trilogy will be ruin by a dishonorable prequel, I don't want to witness another destruction like episodes I, II & III did to Star Wars.
FYI the Spanish actor who played Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona was Javier Bardem, Benicio del Toro is a Puerto Rican actor winner of an academy award and has a well known career as an actor.
What I did was an honest mistake, you on the other hand are an ignorant who can't differentiate a Puerto Rican from a Spanish, hell I bet you even think Spain is a part of Latin America. So before you make your "witty" remarks, double check your facts before.
If you dont know much about hobbits, watch my video (it explains the much)

@UsherMoore: because "the Hobbit" takes place some 60 years before "The Lord of the Rings", when Bilbo was in his Fifties. As hobbits age differently to humans, this would mean he would look like a man in is early 30s. How do you imagine Ian Holm should play a guy who is less than half his age? Do it all by CGI? Might look a little strange.
Just in case you haven't read this statement the about 100 times it has been made before.

you are correct, McAvoy does not look like Bilbo in the original trilogy, but he looks a lot like Elijah Wood. Therefore, to me it would be believable that he would be Frodo's uncle.

What happened to Ian Holm?
1993DJC 2 years ago
He's too old. :(
thenevereverboy 2 years ago
he wasnt that young in the lotr, besides in the hobbit he doesn't technically do that much that would tire him etc.
1993DJC 2 years ago
He's seventy eight - he did also have cancer a few years ago - I mean, it would be amazing if he could be Bilbo don't get me wrong, but for whatever reason he doesn't want to. Also at the beginning of the Hobbit Bilbo is 66 I think, isn't he - which is like 40ish in human years.
thenevereverboy 2 years ago
actually he was 50 and 51 at the end, I know that makes it worse for me, but I hate when people change actors for the same characters, that is why the Hunt for Gollum sucked
1993DJC 2 years ago

And instead of finding the ring , maybe he can find a gift certificate to Neiman Marcus for a free shopping spree...
neoperseus 2 years ago 3
Del Toro already chose Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, and Hugo Weaving to reprise their roles. So I think we can trust del Toro so far.
I don't think he'd cast an idiot like McAvoy.

Dont forget that Peter Jackson himself CHOSE del Toro to work with the movie, to produce him on an outstanding budget and has been wanting to work with him for years. So there is something in this arangement, cuz jackson is putting his baby into his hands and wants to see a different product, one that he wouldnt do.
laramoli 2 years ago
Because Peter Jackson has faith in Del toro...Don't let us down Del toro. I think Del toro will make him proud.
Gatita089 2 years ago
the scenery, the actors are going to be the same. its the feeling that u get from the movie thats going to be different, which is perfect, because lort is a huge emotional struggle for the characters, the plot of the hobbit itself cannot compete with that of lort in this point. what makes the hobbit good close to lort is its tinge of fairy tale, its supposed to be an exiting adventure, the sort of which bilbo will want to go again, and that is the type Toro manages to portray really well.
laramoli 2 years ago
gonasay,
have u actually read tolkien?
Jackson did an awesome job, and the movie ended up even better than the book, but he did make it his own and not tolkiens! the amount of poetic liberty taken was amazing, even for movie adaptation standards.

Gonasay 2 years ago
del toro is an amazing director better than jackson, he is more of a visionary director wait and see
richiecolt 2 years ago
yes, but the hobbit wont fit in at all with peter jackson's work - and that lack of continuity will most likely leave a luke warm experience.
Jackson put an incredible amount of detail into the LOTR. it's easy to critise, but he did a phenominal job
Gonasay 2 years ago 2
Your misunderstanding what he is saying. He is not saying that he wont stay true to Tolkiens work,he is saying that he will use his own style more than Peters.Peter didnt just do it Tolkiens way. How could he? He used his own style, check the behind the scenes footage of LOTR and youll know what I mean. Del Torro will use his own style of filming and why shouldnt he?! Peter didnt hire him to make it so that he could copy himself now did he?Del Torro also loves Tolkiens books, hell show it justice
NikstSWE 2 years ago
@Gonasay That's stupid of you to say, you haven't even seen what he's going to do and you're already ripping on him. He's done a great job in other movies. They would not have given him the chance to direct this movie had he been a brainless hollywood director. Del Toro is great and if anybody else had to direct the hobbit other than Peter Jackson I'm glad it's him.
Gatita089 2 years ago
if Peter Jackson doesn't do it, it shouldn't be done AT ALL. It was Tolkein's life work, and so it should be Peter Jackson's... nobody else can do it justice.

i have a great feeling about this. the hobbit has a much defferent feel than the lord of the rings books and it will be great to see another vision of middle earth, particularly from the creator of "Pan's Labarynth". plus peter jackson is probably still burnt out on hobbits and wizards after the herculean effort of the 3 Lord of the Rings movies.

We are missing the main point here. Jackson CHOSE del Toro. He would not have chosen him if he did not have faith that he would create an amazing prequel to LOTR. This man directed both Hellboys, Blade II, and let's not forget Pan's Labyrinth. He won't fail "The Hobbit".
magikalme 2 years ago

obviously it won't be the exact same but Toro did say he wanted to make it as much his own without ruining the world that was made before. I look forward to seeing the similarities but more the differences. I mean common people, the director switch is a pretty good match, and tame at that. Its not like it would be if they decided to let Tom Burton or Woody Alen direct it! LOL!

His and Jacksons movies.
celebrimor90 2 years ago
you people are retarded del toro will bring a new fresh look and peter jackson will be just as much part of these movies as he was with the trilogy.......
worldtraveler1985 2 years ago

WHAT why do you think jackson should be doing it? it would be the same thing over again. del toro is perfect have you ever seen any of his movies? he is the guy for the job. no doubt i would put money on it.
ollymcguirk 2 years ago
Its supposed to be the same thing again because thats what it is. its a different story but the same world, so if there was a different director heaps of things would change cos he is trying to make it his own.. so the continuity wouldnt be good. Look at harry potter they have had 4 separate directors in the series and you can tell cos actors and sets and costumes change like every movie. but no i havent seen any of del toros movies so yeah im sure hell be fine its just id prefer Jackson
pehfarrow 2 years ago
But that is where you are wrong, i understand what you are saying about different stories, same world but infact the world is very different in the hobbit. sure its still middle earth, but alot changed in that gap between the hobbit and rings. its a much smaller tale, more fairtale like than the huge epic lord of the rings is. its a more smaller feel, sure it has its moments, but its more like a little adventure, so really the worlds are different. Check out pan's labyrinth, and the orphanage.
ollymcguirk 2 years ago 2
thats money for you...hollywood clowns think you cant sell a film unless someone young and "hot" plays them...
i hate personnel changes as well...sometimes it cant be helped in the case of a death of an actor...Dumbledore, and the cookie lady from the Matrix....though more often than not its just stupid...eg; Saavik from Star Trek..
rageohol 2 years ago
yeah he cant be Bilbo.
