Well,after 30 yrs of living in Houston and being active in the GOP,I am unaware of anybody in either location that sees oil as 'renewable'...that's why we are always looking for more...duh...I also favor conserving and using marginal methods like wind and solar,but leaving oil in the ground solves nothing with a growing population....only by developing more domestic sources will we lessen the Arabs' grip on our import needs....it's not rocket science...just drill where we know there is oil

Come on, Armigerous, even the supporters of the ANWR drilling idiocy admit (when pressed) that 1) it would take 10 years minimum for the oil to be usable and 2) that it would at best provide only 1.2 percent. The Energy Information Administration itself lamblasted the idea saying that OPEC could easily offset any price reduction ANWR ($1.50 a barrel at MOST). Stop spouting GOP delusions that ANWR will solve all our oil problems; reality is it won't.

Oil is a FINITE RESOURCE and all opening ANWR would do is **delay** peak oil and it was (and still is) projected that our oil demand would rise given current trends. The **only** way cut into our import needs is to conserve and develop renewables--the exact things Carter wanted us to do in the 1970s. We can't explore our way out of peak oil and Carter knew it. Stop living in the GOP fantasy world where oil is treated as a renewable.

In fact, free market competition DOES work, but not in a totally non-regulated market. Most people forget that the free market competition they now enjoy didn't really exist until after the federal govt. brought in anti-trust and anti-monopoly laws around the turn of the century.
Before that, it wasn't uncommon for whole states to be under the thumb of giant monopolies. (Hint: and the health insurance companies are one of the only two industries that are EXEMPTED from those anti-trust laws.)

If people really had an idea of how devastated the economy was when Bush left, they would understand why Obama has taken so many of the actions he did.

The DC educational voucher program because the GOP had killed the amendment in the bill that would have held the private schools participating to the SAME STANDARDS as the public schools per the No Child Left Behind Act. The fix was in and it would take years for that nonsense to work with way through the courts and so Obama killed this GOP effort to allow private schools to be given a blank check. The GOP are hypocrites when it comes to accountability in PRIVATE schools.
