I have another question my granddaughter had to go to the ER for svt greater then 200, the Dr wanted my son to try vagal manuvers before going to the er, my granddaughter just had the asd repair 2weeks earlier, they gave her beta blockers x2 iv she converted over, but she's still on lasix and beta blockers, I thought the repair was supposed to fix the problems. thanks for answering my questiona. Jeannie
@jeannie0007 I'm very sorry for your granddaughter's rhythm problems. It would help if you could tell me how old she is. This rhythm problem is very rare in young children, which is why we try to repair this defect when the patients are still adolescents.
my son is 7 and he needs surgical closure for his ASD . the doctor tried to do it with the procedure but couldnt , they said that the device does not fit . is this possible ? now they recomended to with Surgical Closure I am freeked man . because before that i lost 18 month baby girl coz of DCM in that same hosp. dont know what to do they said do it after 1 year as your son is fine .. please advise
@Hindukimaakathoko I'm sorry about your son's ASD, and the problems you have had. It is very possible for a attempt at device closure to fail because the defect is too big. In those cases, it is good that the cardiologist did not leave the device in. Your son needs a surgical repair. In our hands, this operation has been done for the past 15 years with zero mortality. The hospital stay is 3 days. Life expectancy after surgery is normal. You need to go to a top congenital heart surgery center.
@amr0arafat Thank you for the kind comment. We rarely close ASD's primarily, unless there is absolutely no tension on the suture line. Primary closure of a secundum ASD under tension will cause a recurrence, and we have seen patients with this complication referred from other heart centers. We treat the pericardium with 1.5% Glutaraldehyde for 5 minutes. We have also used Cormatrix for these repairs.
my granddaughter had surgery to repair her asd , she's one week post op, now she keeps having runs of svt and complaining of chest pain the cardiologist said just give tylenol, should he be doing something for the svt? she has had approx 4 episode of the svt post surgery,
@jeannie0007 Thank you for your email. I ran your granddaughter's problem by our electrophysiologist, probably the best in the country. His name is Steven Fishberger MD, and he said "Typically we try to document the mechanism of SVT by an event monitor.
If reentry SVT due to a pathway, then ablation can be done. Many of the atrial
tachycardias post op are transient and resolve spontaneously. In the interim,
this can be quieted down with a beta blocker." I hope this helps.
i had a defect when i was a baby and had an operation when i was 4....the thing is i don't know it it was ASD or VSD and when i ask mom she just says that its was a hole in my heart and that all she remembers aboutl my childhood that i cried most of the time "before the surgery"
@kawaiiushii Statistically, your defect was most likely to be an ASD. It appears that you recovered well, where did you have your surgery? Sincerely, Redmond Burke MD
@kawaiiushii We would have taken intraoperative pictures of your heart defect before and after the repair, and stored them in an electronic medical record, which you would have access to. That way, you would know exactly what your defect was, and be sure that it was completely repaired during your operation. This should be the standard of practice in medicine, but we are the only team that does this.
@kawaiiushii This is a great question about ASD. It is possible for a child to have an ASD, then have it close without surgery, and then have it open again. It is also possible for a child to have surgery to close the ASD, get a good initial result, and then have the repair fail and the ASD return. This is usually due to a technical failure by the surgeon. We usually use a patch repair to prevent tension, and check an intraoperative echo after the repair to make sure the defect is closed.
Congratulations on your daughter's successful surgery. I'm happy to hear that she has done well after heart surgery for TAPVC. Good luck in the New Year.

Congratulation for this nice work
In closure of ostium secondum ASD, Do you prefere closing it directly or with patch?
When you use pericardial patch, do you use it treated or not?
if you like to treat the pericardium which concentration and how long do you use gluteraldehyde?

@kawaiiushii so it was either Great Ormond Street, or the Harley Street Clinic, your mom will remember.
