@deaxchem~ Im a U.S. NAVY veteran and a HUGE John Wayne fan. You have NO idea what you are talking about my friend. There are HUGE numbers of total LOSERS wearing a uniform and there always has been. Get your facts straight and before you run your mouth about someone, hows about you list all of YOUR great deeds and accomplishments!
@deuxchem The Duke was not a "draft dodger" as you put it. He was where the Government wanted him. He did far more for the war effort making movies that pushed for the sales of War Bonds than he ever could in uniform. he was a Patriot and the true definition of a man. If you can't handle that, sit in your corner and knit.
@deuxchem John Wayne had a health problem that kept him from going into the service, so he did the next best thing, he tried to uphold our service men and he tried to tell the stupid in the USA what we were fighting for. so read a little more before you try and bring down Big John.
When war broke out, John Wayne tried to enlist but was rejected because of an old football injury to his shoulder, his age (34), and his status as a married father of four. He flew to Washington to plead that he be allowed to join the Navy but was turned down. So he poured himself into the war effort by making inspirational war films.
He was born is different generation strong/Macho was the way to go, but he was changed man, he learnt a lots of things from his life experience. He was a good man.

I love the Duke-but you read his early 70's interviews about race or women's rights or the Vietnam War etc-he was as into an Us vs Them, i.e. Hyphen mentality, as anyone you could name. Sorry but it's true.
mowm88 I agree that John Wayne was not a perfect person.... for that matter neither am I or any of us for that matter. Maybe he changed and grew. I mean he lived in a differant era than us and I understand that. If you listen what he says is so simple and basic, and that i beleive is the beauty of this poem and why it rings so true to me.
The Duke said it all

Ignore that moron. :)
"John Wayne was exempted from service due to his age (34 at the time of Pearl Harbor) and family status, classified as 3-A (family deferment).

THIS IS A MESSAGE FROM THE DUKE!!!
I fought for America, and it doesn't bother me that he didn't!!! He says everything about my country I wish I had the words to say.
God Bless my beautiful America. And God rest The Duke.
I hope he would not be ashamed of what we became without him............
jlcarter99 2 years ago 13
No it doesn't bother you. But it bothered thousands of other soldiers and families of soldiers who fought and died.
By the way, how do you feel about those dodging VietNam by fleeing to Canada?
They belong in jail no?
