I'm not entirely sure what the formula is but as far as I know its random, I think it has something to do with how much gold you earn total in battle I have no idea

it is a flat 25% chance that he will leave party after every battle in the forest and after you get off the Phantom Train.

The Phantom Forest/Phantom Train scenario is one of my favorite parts of the game. And the enemy Ghost looks cool, too!

once he gets a certain amount of gil, he leaves, so, try not to have too many battles with him, and don't level grind with him until later in the game when you get him permanently.

Another note is that the ghosts in the train are either enemies, friends to add to the party and one in each train room sells items, which helped me a lot since I ran out of tonic LOL.

Btw, the difference in my experience on the train is that shadow dumped me before the forest, I only had the other 2 available and the 2 ghosts hehehehe XD

I knew about the friends or enemies part... did not know about the shop O_o I actually never found the ghost shops on any playthrough O_O... perhaps I missed um somehow ah well lol
