Scatting is vocal improvisation with random appellations and syllables or without the use of words.  Scatting allows singers to improvise melodies and rhythms to create an instrumental-like solo using their voice- a vocal improvisation. And without a doubt, vocal improvisation is much more difficult than insturmental improvisation.

hey I recommend you listen to the best of Ella Fitzgerald. She is a fabulous jazz vocalists and has some great scat solos. Also download or buy the program 'Band in a box' if you want to scat yourself. It's great if you're not very good at piano. You just type the chords in and the program plays it for you in whatever feel you want or are going for.

if I were you, find someone who can improv really well and ask them to help you out. If you can find that person and they teach you correctly, you're in luck. If not, I would suggest buying the Maiden Voyage and some type of Jazz Piano book, that has Jazz Voicings in it. There's also plenty of videos out there (careful with youtube how-to's of scat, most people on youtube don't know how to scat). I hope this helps, I just had a class where I studied scat singing, good luck in the audition!
