If you pitch up a track by 3%, it changes key by one semitone, so if you have 2 tracks in the same key and their tempos are within 3% of each other, then they should sound OK together.
@lambd01d Oops I meant if you pitch a track up 6%, it goes up 1 semitone, but the second part of my comment still stands, as the interval between the 2 starts to resemble a minor 2nd(which is dissonant).
Here's a SECRET folks, if you key all of your vinyl tracks at 1 CONSISTENT bpm (ie: 130bpm for House) & THEN learn the pitch of the tracks relative to that bpm, it doesn't matter where your sliders are anymore as long as your tracks are beatmatched to each other. Play a Hip-Hop track beat-matched w/ a House track and they'll stay in pitch. ;o) Check out some near perfect harmonic blend examples on my on my page. ANTHONY JAOCBS
i have a question perhaps regarding mixing in key... does traktor scratch pro's "key lock" function mean that regardless of the change in tempo... the songs' will remain in key?
@DJhattymarris Yes, that function stretches time without affecting the pitch, so in theory it's designed to do that. In practice, my opinion is that it sounds SO atrocious, that one would never, ever want to touch it.
I was holdig my breath waiting for a solution to this. But it never came :( Conclusion is you should picl/match records for a set that do not outrun eachother in bpm/tempo much.
I want 2 ask u if djm 800 effects work even on Technics 1210 mk2, which don't have any A/D converter...in other words has this amazing mixer a converter for each channel or KAM turntables [in video] have it inside? Thanks a lot
+/- 6% pitch change is the equivalent of going + or - 1 semitone so if you're mixing two songs and you have to change the pitch more than 4.5% to get them beatmatched it will sound a bit off preferably only mix tracks that require less than 4.5% pitch change to beatmatch
If you make a uniform mix,an line up mix with good selected tunes ,even you have defferences of 5-6% on pitch control none will never notice that.Djs who play minimal know that....minimal tracks have the largest BPM range....many track from 124 to 132BMP....and very different keys, higher and very low.
So...it's up to the Dj to chose the good tunes, and avoid that situation and keep the mix balanced with proper tone.
If you really want to mix a song with another that is not in key with you can also record the song with an application like virtual dj... with this application you can change the key without touching the bpm wich is a very good particularity of virtual dj. The only thing is that you have to prepare this stuff before your mix...
BTW excellent tutorial jonathan you've got here! these can help all kind of dj, from the beginner to the advanced!!
Good vid... tho there's even more into this if you go further into it. You can find the pitch that will increase it note or 2 notes etc... and the pitch amound could be checked too to increase/decrease by note etc but think this will come in future videos.
I've had this problem but i would want to mix some of my tracks but when i get em in to the same tempo they sound terrible. :/ well maybe i shouldn't try to mix em.
Maybe not... also have you considered also moving the pitch on the other one too make them more close to each other to begin with more close to the 0 point... maybe if difference is +2 then having one +1 and one -1 (in theory) you might be able to keep the feel the key.
j what kam decks do you have? i got 1200 but thinkin of getting new ones, they look great, my first ever decks for some belt driven kam lol would you recommended them over the 1200s? happy new year mate
thanks j , hope you have a great new years, im sure you will be djing lol. btw ever thought about doing a video of your top 10 tunes of all time?? id be interested to see what they are
I think Master Tempo doesn't fully solve the problem at the moment. It locks the key in place at 0%, but what if you want to change the key to -2% and the temo to -4%? The new cdjs should have Master Tempo 2.0, which can lock the key at whatever pitch you want. The Key Change effect is (at the moment) a better way to solve this problem. Am I right?
The Pioneer DJM 800 I believe has this Key Change effect you're asking for. You can lower the pitch/tempo, then lock the pitch at that particular tempo, so that it stays the same after you change the tempo.
If you pitch up a track by 3%, it changes key by one semitone, so if you have 2 tracks in the same key and their tempos are within 3% of each other, then they should sound OK together.

What lens do you have on your camera that allows the viewer to see a widescreen view of what you're doing? I need one of those badly. Thanks.

is the -/+ 6% pitch change = + or - semitone rule somehow adapted to harmonic mixing diagram? If not, it should be.

Wat you can do is mixing a track that doesn't have the same key, but wen speed up, it does sound great anyway because of the changing in key... :)

The harmonic effect on the Pioneer DJM-800 should go towards helping with this problem.
It allows you to adjust the key until it matches the other track.

to Hingst,no, the master tempo will keep the key for you giiving you the option of using the pitch to it's fullest extent. j
ellaskins 4 years ago
I think Master Tempo doesn't fully solve the problem at the moment. It locks the key in place at 0%, but what if you want to change the key to -2% and the temo to -4%? you're talking about +-3%=7 keytones?

probably not, since I don't understand what you say, sorry. I can't explain it better, just correcting "temo" into "tempo".
yvesmdjgryphon 4 years ago
The Pioneer DJM 800 I believe has this Key Change effect you're asking for. You can lower the pitch/tempo, then lock the pitch at that particular tempo, so that it stays the same after you change the tempo.
