@maddogmatt44 - Sorry -never promised that ;-) Glad she didn't do it, sorry you'll never get those 17seconds of your life back, but hope you enjoyed anyway!
@superhockeyking1011 - Like a 10" deep one - was sold as a portable rink, but is basically a shallow swimming pool. Inflatables don't hold up in the cold or around skating blades, think that's why the must have stopped selling it.
The grass was green in the back ground how were you able to get ice like that, does it have its own cooling system or wtf? I am looking for something 365 24/7 and brine and other chemicals are too dangerous to be screwing with in my hood.
@alecthehbomb00 - Ok, this is getting weird... 1. It's my daughter, thought it would be fun to take a video of her skating - period. 2. Thought people might be interested in seeing an option for a backyard ice rink. 3. Wanted to share the video with grandparents, friends, relatives, and at the time I posted, it was the easiest and best way to do it. Now I'm wondering....
@alecthehbomb00 - see above response - to share it with friends and relatives, and everyone interested in a backyard rink. Or ask the 68,000 others who watched it.
@alecthehbomb00 - Just fine with me! I've watched thousands of YouTube vids without like/dislikeing any of them. Guess they bumped into it and were interested ;-)
@alecthehbomb00 This has to be the dumbest post I have ever read. Many mothers video tape their kids doing cute things, something I never did.I never got around to buying a video tape years ago.I do have one tape a friend taped of my children when they were little. Its so cute to see years later.Do you have kids?Probably not since your post was so silly.Have you ever heard of America's Funniest Videos on ABC?I am sure you watched it.Its been on TV for 20 years.
@alecthehbomb00 Coz you asked the mother of the little girl, why did you tape a 4 year old skating?Do you have kids? Most parents want to tape their kids growing up and doing cute things.Years later you can enjoy those tapes after your child has grown up.
Dude, take my advise, get her a helmet. I'm all for crazy stuff but I fell while playing hockey on the pond behind my house when I was a young kid and busted my head really good. Went to a new doctor the other day for something unrelated and when he felt the big dent in the back of my head he was like," Holy Crap! What happened?!" I told him and he said I'm lucky to have no lasting damage. Haha, I do have superior intellect and looks though:) Enjoy!!
@puddynuts Good point, but she's older now and figure skating with the local club - don't see any figure skaters wearing helmuts, would be interesting to maybe see that someday ;-)
We bought it - like a large shallow swimming pool, don't think you can get it any more. I don't think it would be too hard to build, probably some plans on the internet somewhere. Get a big plastic tarp, pound some stakes in the ground, staple the tarp to the stakes, and fill with water... Good Luck!
wowwww! how do you make that? im 11 and i want a rink in my backyard...im working on my double sal....but my dad said we have enough money to build one but ts too much work to go thru....?
Lauren just turned 7 this week, and will be skating in her first real figure skating competition in Green Bay next week - plan to post a short video of that to show how far she's come!
@alexvandy99 - Only used it in the late fall/winter, when temps generally drop below freezing. And yes, if you get some melting, some snow, etc. the ice condition can get bad. You can just spray it with some fresh water and let it freeze again, that helps.
@yogirl10601060 - awesome! It was a long drive from here too, but we stayed and went to the Packer family night scrimmage. Hope your competition went well!
@lollie87 - not even in parts of Australia? I cross country ski, and I see there is a cross country ski race this month in Austrialia. If you can have snow, you must be able to have ice!
@theyerlt well yeah in parts of australia it gets cold enough to snow...well really only one part...and thats down in the snowy mountains which is a looooong way from Sydney....here in sydney it never snows....u also gotta keep in mind that most of australia is desert....and we are about the size of the USA
@lollie87 - guess you have take the good with the bad ;) We got both - hot summers, cold winters. I really would like to visit Austraila some day, Sydney would be great to see, but really want to do that ski race - the Kangaroo Hoppet - someday. It's this weekend, the 28th, and I know a few people over there to do it.
She is 4 y/o in this video (now 6). It was Nov. in Wisconsin, and we sometimes have cold temps (10-20 deg. F) without snow, and it was cold enough for a week to freeze all the water. Once frozen, it stays frozen for a while even if it gets above freezing. Once the snow comes, we shovel it off until spring. When it snow, she's a skier too (see video response above of her last year)
She's better than me too, and I'm her Dad ;) Actually, this was before lessons, and now a year and a half later, she's in the figure skating club and doing ice shows.
Update on the rink - I didn't see this model available anywhere this year. I used it like described above,(stapled sides to stakes) and it worked like a charm. Ice finally melted, water drained, my wife took it and tossed it in the trash. Guess it's gone for good. It was fun while it lasted!
Update on ice rink - bought it on Leaps and Bounds (cataloge/website) last year. This year - Inflatable sides, lots of holes couldn't patch them all. Put up slats (driven into ground) around perimeter, stapled sides to slats and filled. Worked great. Not sure how many more years, but served it's purposes for $100.
We live in Wisconsin, I recall it was in Nov., and took a week or so of below freezing weather to be able to skate on it. I think it was in the 20's (F) at night during that streach, and didn't get much above freezing during the day either. It's about 6 inches deep, so it takes a bit to get it to freeze 4" or so and be able to stand on it.
as long as its at or below freezing during the day and in the teens at night, it takes aout 11-12 days to freeze to the ground if its 4 inches thick like mine.
1. It cost about $100, and was purchased in a catalog from a company associated with One Step Ahead (can't find it anymore, but I'm sure there are similar ones out there)
1. I cost about $100, and was purchased in a catalog from a company associated with One Step Ahead (can't find it anymore, but I'm sure there are similar ones out there)
2. Not a kiddie pool, but similar to one - it's about 8" deep, and is intended for just this purpose, a small, portable, instant (with freezing temps) ice rink.
Ha,that's a good one! And that's not real grass, or my daughter either ;) Believe what you want, but isn't ice clear?? Go out on a lake after first ice - it's pretty cool how you can see the bottom. This was the first time we tried it after it froze solid. I'll try to post a video response of what it looks like now - alot different than when it first froze up...
does it need to be freezing outside? or does something underneath the ice keep it frozen? cause i live in vancouver BC.. its cold. but not freezing temps.. =[
No problem - it was late Nov./early Dec. here in Wisconsin, and there was a cold snap of Several single digit (F) nights and teen days. It's only about 5-6" deep, so it froze up hard. Never did look that close, but it kinda does look like summer! Grass was still fairly green, early winter.
We bought it through a catalog called One Step Ahead (baby/toddler stuff) If I recall, it was the only size they offered. I think there are other sources for similar products on the web, even saw some on ebay. Some might be larger.
It's an instant ice skating rink, can be bought for ~$99. Lay it out, inflate the sides (two tubes, and fill with about 6" of water. Allow to freeze and presto, instant ice rink! Just don't run into the sides with the skates, or you'll put a leak into it. Can be patched, but doesn't really matter once it's froze.
