In a nut shell, Disco was in the 80s, Techno was in the 90s.

Disco died and was replaced by house music. Even if you hear disco today, it will still be called house.

Techno died and was replaced by trance music.

The difference between house and trance is in the speed or BPM. House is usually between 110-135 and Trance is between 130-145. So in essence trance is faster than house.

Trance can contain other breakdowns and the essential thing that makes a track a trance track is the magic moment at the middle of the song which can be breathtaking. and also the subgenres of trance like progressive, tech, uplift, hard, psy or goa.

One their called KRAFTWERK they actually formed in 1968 but didn't catch fame until the track AUTOBAHN was released... even at that it wasn't really a hit until years later! Secondly the next group is called CYGNUS X and they didn't appear until 1997-98. Acid was and will always be an American Detroit thing birthing in the mid 80's. Today techno is just a loosely based term!

@ToekneeDeeZee techno is born in the 80s together with house. and didnt died in 90s. they came from usa to europe expecially uk in the late 80s replaced disco and from the fusion of this 2 genres trance and all others electronic subgenres were born. and the difference is in the structure of the song, not the speed. take delerium - innocente (tiesto remix), its trance even if it's slow. different structure, different atmosphere etc

@Amgadovich Well Disco started in the 70s after that the 80s was the Italian disco era with some other euro disco, by the late 80s early techno, breakbeat and jungle started, In the 90s house, rave and eurodance become popular and by the mid to late 90s trance started getting big, now they all have subgenres out there, I have left out a few as well, like Toekneedeezee said you really can tell by the bpm and the bassline....

When you make a remix/track you want your native elements to be present in the track.

I spoke to Nitrous oxide and he goes if you don't have any of your elements in the track then its shouldn't be under your name. I like DJ's who stick to their sounds because, those sounds are unique. Armin has turned into a Tiesto/combo with Deadmau5 sounds. He has left the trance genre all together.

the difference is huge. Its all in the beat. Trance drum loops are completely different from house drum loops. The differences are there because artists has long realized that certain beat and tune sound great at a certain range of speeds or bpm.
