One of the musical saints our land has seen in the recent past. I never had a chance to see her live :(.......next birth I will play Mridangam for her for ever ;) so that I can just keep looking at this apara gana sarasvathi, 'sangeetha Kalanidhi' in its true sence.

Amma has sung the Kriti with deep devotional feelings for each and every word of Karnataka (aka Carnatic) Music founder Sri Purandara Daasa's one of the great compositions. It has come out so natural since her mother tongue is Kannada.

@kandaasa She has made mistakes in pronunciation at several places. Her voice is divine but since Kannada is not her mother-tongue, these pronunciation lapses are expected.

An excellent rendition with fairly good Kannada pronunciation. One of the great things about MSS' music is that her uchcharana (pronunciation) of all words is generally pretty good, whether the language is Kannada, Tamizh, Sanskrit or Telugu. Also important to note is that she is pretty old when singing at this concert, which makes this video doubly laudable! :) Will remain an inspiration for many more decades to come.

Dear schopenhauersring , Quite interestingly every Tamil word ending with an "aa" sound gives the same meaning in Kannada. Example, the word you have mentioned "Uchcharana" is called as Ucharippu in Tamil. Good to note that Tamil is living in well in her daugther Kannada's vocabulary.

@Chempadu123 - its the other way pal. Uchcharana is a pure sanskrit word, and is used in Kannada in its original form - as are most other words. Tamil on the other hand has a lot of words that are pronounced different from sanskrit / kannada.

I agree 100% with you Chipmunchkin. I was about to comment on great MSS automatically folding her hands when she says Purandara or Venkataramana. A sign of true devotion, excellent quality which is totally lost in this present world.

Karnataka music concert is not complete without founder Purandara Daasa's krithis, padas and devara naamas. As usual MSS excels. Many foreigners consider Jagadodaarana that MSS sang at UN concert is the best they have heard in Karnataka Music. Please post it.
