Not that it is important but I do not believe that he was, actually, split in two. The CART medical director said "...When I reached the car, I was shocked to see that Smiley's helmet was gone, along with the top of his skull. He had essentially been scalped by the debris fence. The material on the race track was most of his brain. ...I rode to the care center with the body. He had a gaping wound in his side that looked as if he had been attacked by a large shark. I had never seen such trauma."

amazing to see the disintagration of that car at least gorden didnt suffer a lingering death it was for the most part instant but every human has a certain amount of feeling b4 dieing no matter what the cause is the ? is how long are u seeing your ultime departure from this plain i think determains what plain you go to upon exit from this plain only a theroy not proven

A friend of mine was working for ABC Sports as a camera man and watched this happen. What they don't tell you is that "Gordie" was really cut in half at the waist............Sad but true.......

By tradition, nobody dies at Indy and they are always pronounced dead in the ride to or at the hospital. But rumor is that Smiley could have been transported in two ambulances :( This is definitely one of the all time worst solo racing car accidents. RIP

@TheDK077 Shredded to pieces. His skull was shredded against the guardfence and they found brain tissue hanging on the fence after the crash.  The chief medic on the scene wrote about it in a book after he retired.

According to the CART medical director who was on the scene, his helmet was pulled off his head on point of impact and the top of his skull was gone and brain matter was on the track. As the director rode with the body in the ambulance, he performed a cursory examination and discovered that every bone in his body was shattered and had a large gaping wound as if a shark had bitten him. This is quite definitely the most gruesome crash in Indy history. RIP
