THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL. WE LIVE BY THE BANNING MANSION AND EVERY YEAR WE RE-LIVE THE CIVIL WAR. THIS SONG IS PERFECT FOR AN OCCASION LIKE THIS I FEEL ANYWAYS.
I am a Virginian by birth, I can live nowhere save the Old Dominion, and I can never forsake her. Should the day arise that my beloved Commonwealth were to leave the Union but a second time, at birth my lot was cast and it would be my beloved Virginia with whom I'd walk. Therefore, I cannot listen to the tune "Shenandoah" without a many a tear. I pray to the Almighty that I will never live the day that I can listen without a tear.
@trippjt2 I am not born nor living in the CSA but I also feel it deeply - long live to the CSA a country stuffed full of God-fearing and trustworthy gentlemen and beautiful dames!
Well done. This version captures the spirit of the river flow and wipes the floor with some of the poor musically constructed versions sung by the choirs on you tube.
The simplicity of their performance, shows this classic in a new light. I now realize how much "sweetening" is dumped into the song by orchestras. It needs nothing added to it beyond this band's interpretation. I am on my way to check out their website ...
i have heard many arrangements of shenandoah. some were great and others horrible. this is by far the best one that i have heard. beautiful sound. nice and dark. shenandoah was written as a piece originally to show the saga and horrible truth of death in the civil war days. during that time it was one of those songs that was able to make one cry and make you look back at what the point of all the death was in the civil war.
man this song is awesome. my band performed it a year ago and it sounded nothing like this, we were not in the same league as you.great job.i'm trying to learn the euphonium intro on my trombone.
what greater song can one perform then shenandoah depicting the civil war, this amazing vidio that you have uploaded with the national civil war band, that sends chills up and down ones spine reliving a moment in history that is brought to life .great vidio upload!!!!
How dare you say something like that to something like this? This is not a song that is supposed to elicit feelings of hate or anything! Take and close your eyes if you cannot feel the intense sensations going down your spine when the trumpets let out that high note. This is not just a song. This is a composition of the highest calibre, one which was labored over so that people might know just what it is that The United States of America stands for.
The solos are very pretty for it...how quickly is it supposed to go??my band director takes it like half of that speed..then speeds up some..it says 50 at the beginning...a lot slower than you are playing it..
Thank you for your complimentary words. As for the tempo we use for our 19th Century Brass Band (Civil War era) arrangement - we have found that this is a good tempo for us since it is not so fast as to rush the wonderful melody, but also not so slow that the players run out of air by the end of the phrases.
God Bless our wonderdful country!!!!!! God bless the blue and grey and our black brothers and sisters and jeepers kreepers....... ALL of us,,Kiss 4 USA!!!!

This is a wonderful rendition.
BTW, celticwomanfanpiano -- the "harsh" sound of modern day versions of these older instruments is due to the musicians, not the instruments.

this song brings tears to my eyes... I played it in high school marching band, i had a trio on baritone... It was an honor

I love the mellow sound of the period instruments. The modern day versions are more harsh sounding. This is so much more pleasing to the ear.

Less is more. A wonderful rendition! Simple, honest and true to its origins. Much better than more ornate or over-sentimental versions.

My school orchestra in playing this song and we sound nothing like this. Awesome!! Now I know what its supposed to sound like. lol

was that a euphonium solo or a saxhorn solo?
organist121893 3 years ago 2
On this 2003 recording, we used a euphonium.

@organist121893 Euphonium... I think. We played this piece in band and the solo at the beginning was a euphonium.
