  • THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL. WE LIVE BY THE BANNING MANSION AND EVERY YEAR WE RE-LIVE THE CIVIL WAR. THIS SONG IS PERFECT FOR AN OCCASION LIKE THIS I FEEL ANYWAYS.

  • Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you Away you rolling river Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you, Away, I'm bound away 'cross the wide Missouri

  • I am taking The grade 11 American History class in Canada. Without that class i would not have found this lovely song.

  • Wonderful music. Greetings from Bavaria (the German South) !

  • What a wonderful rendition of a moving and historic song. Thanks so much.

  • is there a way to get a good quality copy of this recording?

  • @hedroncollider There is a 2008 Live Concert recording of this song in the "Magic Lantern" section of our band's website.

  • is there a way to get a good quality copy of this recording?

  • I am a Virginian by birth, I can live nowhere save the Old Dominion, and I can never forsake her. Should the day arise that my beloved Commonwealth were to leave the Union but a second time, at birth my lot was cast and it would be my beloved Virginia with whom I'd walk. Therefore, I cannot listen to the tune "Shenandoah" without a many a tear. I pray to the Almighty that I will never live the day that I can listen without a tear.

  • @trippjt2 I am not born nor living in the CSA but I also feel it deeply - long live to the CSA a country stuffed full of God-fearing and trustworthy gentlemen and beautiful dames!

  • @whitemaleandproud

    Amen. God save the South.

  • @trippjt2

this is what Gen Lee said and did.

  • Well done. This version captures the spirit of the river flow and wipes the floor with some of the poor musically constructed versions sung by the choirs on you tube.

  • Very nicely done, that song will forever stir my soul for America.

  • yeah this is quit a bit faster than the written tempo

  • When I played this in band 2 years ago, I almost cried.

  • This is a wonderful rendition.

BTW, celticwomanfanpiano -- the "harsh" sound of modern day versions of these older instruments is due to the musicians, not the instruments.

  • Thank you for posting. This is wonderful!

  • simple and sensitive. very nice music. i also like this song with Romanian Young Brass

  • this song brings tears to my eyes... I played it in high school marching band, i had a trio on baritone... It was an honor

  • I love the mellow sound of the period instruments. The modern day versions are more harsh sounding. This is so much more pleasing to the ear.

  • The simplicity of their performance, shows this classic in a new light. I now realize how much "sweetening" is dumped into the song by orchestras. It needs nothing added to it beyond this band's interpretation. I am on my way to check out their website ...

  • Less is more. A wonderful rendition! Simple, honest and true to its origins. Much better than more ornate or over-sentimental versions.

  • My band played a much simpler version of this song but beautiful euphonium section

  • y band is playing this!!!! i love it

  • my band is playing this soon

  • i have heard many arrangements of shenandoah. some were great and others horrible. this is by far the best one that i have heard. beautiful sound. nice and dark. shenandoah was written as a piece originally to show the saga and horrible truth of death in the civil war days. during that time it was one of those songs that was able to make one cry and make you look back at what the point of all the death was in the civil war.

  • For sure I play this on mandolin

  • man this song is awesome. my band performed it a year ago and it sounded nothing like this, we were not in the same league as you.great job.i'm trying to learn the euphonium intro on my trombone.

  • what greater song can one perform then shenandoah depicting the civil war, this amazing vidio that you have uploaded with the national civil war band, that sends chills up and down ones spine reliving a moment in history that is brought to life .great vidio upload!!!!

  • How dare you say something like that to something like this? This is not a song that is supposed to elicit feelings of hate or anything! Take and close your eyes if you cannot feel the intense sensations going down your spine when the trumpets let out that high note. This is not just a song. This is a composition of the highest calibre, one which was labored over so that people might know just what it is that The United States of America stands for.

  • My school orchestra in playing this song and we sound nothing like this. Awesome!! Now I know what its supposed to sound like. lol

  • was that a euphonium solo or a saxhorn solo?

  • On this 2003 recording, we used a euphonium.

  • good!

  • @organist121893 Euphonium... I think. We played this piece in band and the solo at the beginning was a euphonium.

  • what are you talking about? its a euphonium not a french horn

  • Good Job!

i was there to listen to the battle of the bands. Thanks to all.

    Job Well done.

    :0)

  • Absolutely beautiful song/performance. The only flaw is the sound quality of the recording. Nice job.

  • someone coughed somewhere

  • Love it!

  • The solos are very pretty for it...how quickly is it supposed to go??my band director takes it like half of that speed..then speeds up some..it says 50 at the beginning...a lot slower than you are playing it..

  • Thank you for your complimentary words. As for the tempo we use for our 19th Century Brass Band (Civil War era) arrangement - we have found that this is a good tempo for us since it is not so fast as to rush the wonderful melody, but also not so slow that the players run out of air by the end of the phrases.

  • Long live the CSS Shenandoah--last to surrender!!Deo Vindice

  • lovely!

  • God Bless our wonderdful country!!!!!! God bless the blue and grey and our black brothers and sisters and jeepers kreepers....... ALL of us,,Kiss 4 USA!!!!

  • Is that a hhorn I hear? SWEET! This son is so prettily depressing. We might be be playing it for band.

  • long live the south is a beutiful country that God gave to us that's why were back as a nation again.

  • Cool video! Check out "Gettysburg" by Michael Chain on Youtube.

  • Me too.this is one of my favorite songs.
