I work with this old guy who is happy to grind a HSS tool bit for two hours! I cant stand in one spot for less than 10 min !!!!!!! One day this guy was helping mesharpen a tool and then we went for our afternoon break. When I came back I realized I had set the sharpened tool bit down somewhere and forgotten where I left it !!! HA HA ! Start over!!
I think your idea is a good one, but I'm having a hard time understanding why you don't just eyeball your angles. That's what I've always done and it's worked good.
I thought so much of your idea that I machined this device to sharpen 1/4" lathe tools. The only changes I used was a brass collar which I installed a set screw to hold the tooling in your collet design. Also I rounded the top of the block to fit my hand better. Thank you for sharing your idea.

Bought the Grizzly G8987 grinding rest, as seen in the video, for about $15.00 plus shipping (Nov, 2010). It was put on back-order, with Grizzly doing a superb job of customer support.
The grinding rest is a Grizzly G8987. It's cheap! They'll probably raise the price if they read this. I found it after I bought a more expensive one off fleabay. I like the Grizzly design much more.
Your holder is exactly what I've been thinking I need. I don't know why I don't see them for sale. You should sell them on-line or on fleabay. Or, at least sell or post the design. I can' t see how you attached the bolt at the bottom of the carrier. Did you weld it? Dave
@servolock1 Thanks for your comments Dave. I have put a bunch of pictures on line that should make everything clear but if not I would be happy to give you more detail. All the dimensions are arbitrary and depend on the size of tool you are sharpening. Have a look at toolgrind(dot)mysmart-tools(dot)com.
I'm sorry I cant remember and there are no markings on it. It was only a cheap one bought online I am sure that you will find something similar through google. Rich
Very neat - I hope to get a grinding rest from Santa this year (lots of hints dropped to the kids about this!), and will have a go at making a tool carrier as you suggest.
I really want the attachment

It would be a lot better (and faster, once you know how) to learn how to grind them freehand. Been machining professionally for over 25 years.

I like your idea for a brass collar and shaping to fit the hand. I am also glad that I have been able to stimulate your imagination.
