  • yes I kept stopping

  • this is a song you pull out when you're having that kind of an afternoon and I get a tear every single time I hear it

  • HAVING MET AND FORUNATE ENOUGH TO SHARE A SPECIAL, AND MAGICAL EVENING CONVERSING WITH PHYLLIS, I,LL ALWAYS FEEL A CLOSENESS WITH HER AND WILL FOREVER CHERISH THE FEW TIMES WHEN WE SPOKE. SHE WAS AN ICON, AND A LIVING TREASURE.ALTHOUGH HER TIME ON EARTH WAS MUCH TOO SHORT, HER SPIRIT AND ENORMOUS GRACE AND TALENT WILL LIVE ON FOREVER. I MISS YOU FRIEND. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN PRETTY LADY.

  • My favorite female vocalist. I miss this in music.

  • One of my best artist I still love her

  • Keep love within God's commandments so that it will last for eternity. Bless you Phyllis, may you have eternal peace and embrace all that was missing from this bleak place.

  • If you have ever been loved, then you know what the sang means, and you know what it means to want to be want to be loved once again.....

  • Phyllis lived to love and be loved; moved by her passion we know as we listen closer. Love you sister for LOVE IS and ALWAYS WILL BE....

  • FRAK ME

  • this song plays a very big part in my life... every time, i avoid hearing it, because tears are sure to rush down as soon as i hear the intro.. but every time i feel so lonely, my heart craves to hear this one particular song... sweet torture.....the best song from Ms. Hyman

  • @marindukenya I thought I was the only one who was moved to tears by the passion Phyllis executed- glad to know I am not alone - we love you Phyllis forever

  • Just beautiful...

you did a wonderful tribute to a outstanding and wonderful lady of song. I was first drawn to her music...simply...in each song...you can feel the mood...even now...it remains...unchallenged...unchanged. This song reflects no gender...it enfolds all walks in life...Thanks "leftmebreathless" for posting.

  • Still isn't a talent that can compare out there! A legend!

  • That was pure greatest!! What a voice like know other!

  • She was she was a very deep person .

  • Applause! This song focus on the many little golden moments one had with a person and looks back at the whole of it. And there... you have it... moments within a lifetime.

Golden moments exist in the past, present and future. Somewhere in My Lifetime is the soundtrack for someone having a glimse of those golden moments of their life.

  • Phyllis when you killed yourself it felt as if my sister had died. My sister you could sing the paint off the walls!!! RIP

  • She was definately one of the unsung entertainers. That's how it is for some of us... It's like the world isn't ready for the abundance and fullness of our gifts, so rather than being embraced by the world, we become outcast simply because they don't know how we fit in the present reality.

  • this song should have done much better on the charts!

  • She sounds like such a deep person....God bless.

  • beautiful song wonderfully sung.

  • phylis is and always was my favorite singer. I can remember when she died my husband would not tell me knowing i would take it terrible. God Bless her. a true star and talent.

  • I KNEW THIS WOMAN PERSONALLY,WHAT A GREAT HUMAN BEING,SHE WILL ALWAYS BE MISS AND ALWAYS LOVED. PLEASE GO TO YOU TUBE TYPE IN FREDA HE GAIN THE WORLD BUT LOST HIS SOUL ,YOU CAN SEE WE HAVE LOST MANY FRIENDS A LONG THE WAY !

  • I freaking love Phyllis Hyman

  • Beautiful. I miss Phyllis.

  • This is quite simply one of the smoothest, richest, most beautiful performances in the history of music. What a sad and tragic life Ms. Hyman lived, but we shall be forever grateful that her music will live on.

  • great voice, nobody sounds like her.

  • I love you all, this is for all my friends!! xoxxoo

  • She was beautiful and had an amazing voice

  • Leftmebreathless79 thank you for posting this unforgettable melody that makes me laugh and cry simultaneously. How wonderful she sounds through her pain.

  • somewhere in my lonely dreams I could listen to this beautiful song over and over again

  • wow what a great artist, human being and missed so very much. check out FREDA PAYNE'S NEW SONG " HE GAIN THE WORLD BUT LOST HIS SOUL " SO MANY GREAT PEOPLE AND ARTIST WE HAVE LOST OVER THE YEARS

  • I remember this song being very popular on the radio around Valentines Day 1979. I believe it even climbed higher on the charts during that time as well.

  • True talent... she was so underrated.. she didn't get the credit she deserved..

  • she was a real classy woman

  • you are truly loved and missed to this very day....so beautiful..so true.........

  • INTENSELY BEAUTIFUL! ;o)

  • It's so hard to pick just one favorite PH song, but this one is pretty close. I got to see her in concert twice. Once in the early 80's with Frankie Beverly and Maze. Phyllis sung her face-off. That concert changed my life. I'd never seen someone so comfortable with their height...she rocked the house that night! I will always remember that concert. Thanks PH...and Rest In Peace friend.

  • One of the best vocalist of all time..can't believe I will not hear anymore music from her..

  • She was Fanastic Great Artist .........

  • When I'm traveling a distance, I always play Phyllis' CD, featuring this song. This song is my favorite. I re-play it over and over! Beautiful song and, she was a beautiful lady! Talking to others/someone can often be medicine for the head!

  • This is a very special it remind me of my first love.

  • I miss you Mrs,Hyman Gone to soon..

  • The STATURE and PRESENCE of her SOUL and VOICE was incomparable for her time. A true SONGTRESS from a loonngg list of DIVAS that have kept JACOB'S LADDER perpetually ascending through the artistry of melody and song. SADLY though, as truth would have it, we were deprived the opportunity of truly experiencing the full capacity of her gift. Only because she hadn't fully blossomed. Can you imagine witnessing the scope of her growth potential. We must be thankful, however.--- ALL PRAISES!!!!

  • @Quan1906 When I was 13 my aunt gave me front row seats to see Phyllis and the O'jays and needless to say I was mezmorized by her performance. She shaped my view of grace and class, she was all of that and some.

  • this song is makin me sad..oh what she could of been in 2011...God why? :( someone that left WAY TO SOON

  • i just wish she had gotten the help she needed. i suffer from depression and i tryed for years to self medicate with alcohol.finally got the help i needed.this song is so beautiful ir will give you the illusion you are in love even if you are not.rest well phillis

  • @sweettooth471 If you watch the autobiography about her from the TV1 Show Unsung, You will see that she tried to get help. She went to rehab, counseling, and therapy more than once. Depression mixed with substance abuse/addictions is a powerful thing that many people do not understand. "Getting help" is sometimes easier said than done. RIP Phyllis Hyman, A TRUE DIVA!

  • Classic! Classic!! Classic!!!

  • She is so greatly missed. Would love to have heard her voice today, here and now but unfortunately her mental illness wouldn't allow us that opportunity. Thank God today there is more help for the disease and the stigma isn't nearly as bad as it was 20 years ago.

  • an excellent singer, with lots of issues, not much different from most people. However not mentioning her failed marriage or ex-husband who started her on her long dependency of cocaine is leaving out a fairly large part of her story.

  • I just want to cry when I hear this song. I used to have every song she made. Too many moves___How sweet is that voice?

  • Still a classic beauty and soulful, sultry sensation...Rest In Love Phyllis - we miss you...

  • BEUTIFULLLL .THIS SONG REMINDS ME OF THE MAN I NEVER MET .THE ONE I ALWAYS SEEN IN MY DREAMS .OF COURSE MY SOUL MATE , THNX PHYILLIS.........THIS SONG REALLY MAKES ME CRY.SADNESS,BUT YET JOYFULL TEARSSSSSSSSS.BEEN AN FAN SINCE THE AGE OF 19 ...........33 NOWWW WOW STILL FEEL THE SAME WAY.ALWAYS WILL BE A FAN EVERY OTHER ARTIST I ADMIRE THERE MUSIC NEVER WAS A FAN

  • I loved her music.......so moving and romantic......such a sad soul.......

  • miss you mucho and love you!!

  • When I think about how here career was I just want to cry. I'm 17 and I was watching TvOne when I came across this gorgeous woman with a even gorgeous voice. Now I can't stop singing any of her songs everywhere I go. She's an influence on many and her story of her battle with bi-polar has really touched my heart and I realize that it's no joke. She's better than Whitney and Mariah and she never received the attention she deserved. Your fams LOVE YOU Phyllis, you're music does live on. :)

  • Phyliis was such a unique singer/performer however sadly

towards the end, she had a troubled soul. Her music though

    will live on...

  • ABSOLUTLY PHENOMINAL. JUST CLOSE YOUR EYES AND LISTEN TO HER VOICE. SO MANY DIFFRENT RANGES IT'S EXTRORDINARY...I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS SONG

  • 16 years ago today,Phyllis left us.One of the greatest and most under appreciated artists ever.Love her music even more now..RIP Phyllis

  • My daughter sang this song at her oldest sisters wedding in 1981 and slamed this jam. She set the church in an uproar and had everyone crying, especially the groom. God rest both Phyllis' soul and my daughter Kira's too.

  • GREAT VIDEO! AND NO OTHER COMMENTS ARE NEEDED; ONE OF MY FAVORITES.

  • HER VOICE RINGS IN MY HEAD CONTANTLY. WHEN YOU EXPERIENCE A VOICE LIKE HERS, IT IS EMBEDDED IN YOUR MIND AND HEART FOREVER. I MISS HER

  • what a Diamond!! And she never even knew'

  • @26160219 beautifully stated. ;)

  • Barry Manilow obviously knew what he was doing when he produced this Classic Ballad ... it is simply PERFECT !! I LOVE you , Phyllis ...xoxo

  • @PeaceFan1 I agree 100%

  • i will always play this i hope you found peace sadly missed by us all

  • Heavenly...forever and always our Sophisticated Lady

  • @rnantista :-)

  • Love your video and a great song.

  • why did she have to kill herself? i love music like this

  • I love this song, so sweet, so deep, so smooth, and mellow. The late great Phyllis Hyman was a bad sister. We love you, Ms. Hyman

  • I love this song, so sweet, so deep, so smoth, and mellow. The late great Phyllis Hyman was a bad sister. We love you, Ms. Hyman

  • who would dislike this song? stupid bitch!

  • Phyllis I am glad I lived in an era when truer artist emerged. You had to stop, listen and reflect. Thanks for leaving a wealth of music.

  • i adore phyllis

  • With the way she sings you would know it!! She sings with such emotion it's hard not to know how she is really feeling, and the messages she is trying to convey in her songs.

  • @dutico i so agree....

  • One of the few songs that can instantly move me to tears. It's a remarkable song and I don't think anyone else could ever do it justice

  • Phyllis Hyman was a beautiful woman, with a beautiful voice. She is one of my secular music favorites. A woman of great class, etiquette, and charm. I wished she could have beaten those mental illness demons that lurked within her.

  • i truly did not know jesus alvarez.....the writer of this wonderful song...i wanted to give him credos ... soooo glad that he is doing okay

  • That voice, could touch You and Me, her range! She (Phyllis Hyman), could make Me,happy and cry at the same time. Miss her, but her CD's will be here forever, for those who know what great singer sounds like. Hopefully She is in a happy Place Now. R I P Lady.

  • Too bad she suffered from major depression! Her partially decomposed body was found over 10 years ago.....suicide. Great singer. We all miss her.

  • Phyllis could really tell a story about love and hurt. Sometimes they were one and the same. You can really hear the emotions in this song.

  • THIS IS SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL

  • @bxfinestladiie yes yes Barry Manilow put his "stamp" on this the big ending... give me chills

  • Probably mentioned already but I believe Barry Manilow, her label mate, wrote this. You can hear the Manilow production all over it.

  • I recently reconnected with my first love. We will see eachother for the first time in 25 years and I sent this song to him. He loved it so much that he wants to play this at our reunion dinner, Thank you Phyllis for your wonderful voice and talent. R.I.P.

  • How can you not market a voice a pure as Phyllis Hyman's?! Everything is pure & effortless. It goes to show that you never realize what you had until its gone, and Phyllis Hyman is a perfect example of that! Honestly, she's better than Whitney Houston & Mariah Carey! Phyllis your voice & statuous beauty will always remain close to my heart!

  • it's more than vocals.... it is EVERYTHING ...... emotions .... feeling ...... gorgeous lush orchestration ..... wonderfully phylis hyman ......... thank you , jesus alvarez for writing this song that has me crying right now

  • @csp1csp1 how do you know jesus alvarez ? today Jesus Alvarez is still singing and writting as a Pastor of the love of jesus family church in orange nj ... extremely gifted singer, musician and Christian leader ...

  • This song always moves me so unbelievably...

  • leftmebreathless79 thank you so much for this, its beyond beautiful.R.I.P. Phyllis.

  • I was fortunate enough to see PHYLLIS perform this song live in concert on March 21st, 1979. Became an instant PHYLLIS HYMAN fan as a result.

  • ooooooh this song man I'm telling you. um. almost makes a grown ass man wanna cry! lol

  • I'm with that person who says there are 4 people who have no taste my mom and I are chillin just enjoying her sweet sultry voice we love her.

  • Such a classic. THis song never gets old.

  • One of the greatest female vocalist of our time.....

  • @littlejonhg ...yes she was! Pure R&B jazz...

  • there are 4 people who have no taste in good music

  • i know your pain baby girl, i live it everyday, fortunetly i have found someone in my life to make it easier, i love you Phyllis, and i really wish you had just hung in there, i guess this world wasn't meant for someone as beautiful as you, like they say, the good die young, R.I.P Sophisticated Lady

  • amazing....speechless...gone to soon, but your music lives forever in my heart.., I love you Phyllis...thanks for sharing your amazing gift with the world..,

  • Her voice is very commanding.....it makes you stand still and take notice.

  • This Song Gets Me Ever Time yall. I will ALWAYS ALWAYS REMEMBER This Beautiful Woman. Ham-Mercy!!

  • Listening to you again Phyllis brings Joy & Pain! you were an incredible soul and would have loved to hear more from you!! I can't get enough of that "unique" yet beautiful VOICE!! BLESS YA

  • Phyliss was a force.. sadly... was a force that never truly got to be reckoned with. But truly.. a voice that one could say was "unforgettable."

  • Voice of a Goddess...R.I.P.

  • A sad yet beautiful song. Phyllis Hyman will be sorely missed! She will always be loved by both men and women all over the world.

  • she is greatly missed. thanks to you and other people who post her songs are keeping her alive for us--and i am very grateful to you for posting!!! thanks soso much!!!

  • She will always be in my heart...along with her music...

  • I remember I was on Am-Trak on my way to Valdosta, Georgia when I heard the news. I was shocked!!!!

  • An Amazing Ballad From A Truly Gifted Songtress

  • THAT VOICE.......I MISS IT.....R.I.P. PHYLLIS!!

  • 150k love this thank God, rip phylis

  • While Phyllis never took issue with Barry Manilow as a person, she really didn't care for this collaboration with him because it was at Clive Davis' suggestion. Clive wanted Barry to produced more of the album but as you see, this is the only song he did. Phyllis was not trying to hear it. She knew who she wanted to be as an artist.

  • this pic of her is beautiful

  • This is my favorite Phyllis Hyman song, perfect vocals!

  • WE MISS YOU PHYLLIS.... Mental Illness is real & it kills people everyday...Suicide is not the answer... STICK AROUND CUZ IT ALWAYS GETS BETTER EVENTUALLY!!!

  • SOOOO GREATLY MISSED!!!! :_((((((((((

  • I saw her perform here in Baltimore at a night club ,i can't remember the name but it was later called Ethels place~maybe someone out there knows the name ~i believe it was in the area of the Meyerhoff. Met a few of her band members strolling around before the show. Also Dizzy gellespi opened the show for her~! I witnessed true talent that evening!~and two legends~

  • I ´play this song again and again in memory of those years with my ex filipina gf , guide/travelcompanion in my 4 wonderful trips to Philippines. I just can't get over her... : "Somewhere in my lonely dreams You've been here with me I have kissed your lips Lips so tenderly They've been kissing me Oh so close to me And I've been loving you Somewhere in my lifetime Somewhere in my lifetime Somewhere in my lifetime It was you...and....me..."
  • My 1st love turned me onto this song, never have forgotten either one!

One of a kind! Forever in our heart!

  • Listening to this just made me go.......WOW!!!!

  • it doesnt matter your age. I love that you created this video and snippets about her life. Thank you.

  • I still get all goosebumps when I hear this song............amazing.....

  • That first photo here is from the insert sleeve of the album "Goddess Of Love." It was white with stainless-steel "bugle" beads, all hand-sewn onto the dress. According to Phyllis, it weighed 30 pounds... Only someone like her, 6-ft-1-in tall could wear AND CARRY it.. Claims it was "stolen," and "...to be on the look-out for any conspicuous drag-queens! I mean, who else could fit in it just right?" Multi-talented, funny woman. Bi-polar had her mentally tormented and broken in spirit.

  • my my my my my my my my my.....it is u u

  • @MrSteezuh agree her lips are way better and what makes them more appealing is that they're natural no surgery or anything just pure beauty

  • Phyllis was a sultry diva who didnt have to resort to nakedness and lots of rythmics beats she used what God gave her ... a voice..

    Rest in Peace...... thank you

  • i feel bad for anyone who has never seen her perform live OMG pure 100% soul

  • her lips are waaaay better than Angelina Jolie!!!!

  • What I think is a shame is that had Phyllis Hyman had been going thru these problems today, she prob would have been cured with all the therapies for depression and anti-depressant medications. It is a hurtful shame that we lost her. I saw her perform live back in 1988, and she broke down and cried on stage; then I knew Phylllis was struggling with some type of demon(s) that obviously got the best of her.

  • I just love her voice. She is and will be the greatest singer out there. Thanks for posting this song.

  • @virgingirl26 i think about her all the time

  • Wow who produced this lady???

  • this was so beautiful,thanx 4 posting ;)

  • she is the best

  • "Somewhere in my Lifetime"...Phyllis has always taken me there, since I first heard her voice "No one can Love her more, than I do"...no one !

  • Did you know that Barry Manilow produced this song? Phyllis we love you and miss you so much. I only wish that she knew just how much she was loved when she was alive. I have to stop now because I feel the tears coming.

  • Somewhere in my lonely dream...... she felt every single syllable of that line.

so lucky to see her twice on Broadway in Sophisticated Ladies w the Hines brothers. she owned everything, the presence of a truly classy diva, incredible contralto voice.

    Twotimes in my lifetime.

Baby I refuse, to be lonely-- lonely is place you can not be

wander thru the You Tube postings and remember and refresh, renew

how we all felt the loss and will never forget our precious Phyllis.

  • i did not know she killed herself

  • So blessed ,so gifted,so talented, so very beautiful,so very sexual,so very under rated as a singer, yet maybe one of the best vocalist of our time! What a great lost to the world, her family, her friends and her fans

  • Comment removed

  • Real soulful talent is truly a gift that should NEVER go unappreciated. Phyllis like Billie had souls deeper than any of us could ever understand. Although you felt their love and pain in their music it still was much deeper then they could ever share. .

  • Lmao!!!

  • True Beauty and Amazing!!! These new girls have nothing on this voice. It will melt a glacier. We miss you our sweet songbird. Too bad you did not realize how much we loved you. Rest in Peace

  • This is the only celebrity that I cried over when she died, an incredible loss.

  • fantastic voice and story.. life is like this. Some sing in the shower or walking their dogs and some get it out there. Nice to hear. it out there.

  • love this song..its my theme song.cry with it all the time

  • This is just the most beautiful song I have ever heard. I cannot stop listening to it. It also has such special meaning to me. Her voice is striking and compelling and cuts right through to your soul. I love you, Phyllis. I hope you find my Mother in Heaven and sing to her. Her name is Phyllis, too. She was also very unhappy and depressed. I wish you could come back. I hope you find up there what you did not find down here! I wish I could have met you.

  • A co-performer said that she had perfect pitch, that she could get a song right THE FIRST TIME! Can "bouncey" do that?

  • beautiful!thats enough! i miss her so....

  • what a beautiful soul and what a beautiful voice. If you have not went through a depression, you probably do not understand this song. what a beautiful lady.I miss her.

  • @alexandscotty i agree with u. she does have that beautiful voice and soul. i'm always listenin 2 her music & know where shes comin from. she really puts emotions & soul n2 her songs/singing, 4 there will never b another phyliis hyman. there r times when i hear her songs/singing its just how i feel. like many others i 2 miss her but we have her music/songs 2 remember her by.

  • who ever made this you are fucking awesome!!

  • beautiful voice R.I.P.Ms.Phyllis Hyman!!!!!!!!!!

  • Two Words, " Thank You".

  • Thanks so much for sharing!!!

  • So tall, so lucious, so sensual, so desirable, look at those eyes! Always made me wonder what was missing in Phil's life? Just when you think someone has everything, makes you wonder.

  • This is such a beautiful song that even makes me cry sometimes. Such detail is so true to how a broken heart feels long long after. Sometimes it simply doesn't ever heal. This is an ideal song for a contest.

  • Another legend, "Gone Too Soon."

Why do the GOOD ones leave us so early?

I have the box set of Hyman's songs. U can't BUY it from me.

This woman could sing ANY genre of music U put B4 her.

I don't think she ever got the recognition she deserved for her talents and accomplishments, from The Industry itself.

I think that is what also caused her to commit suicide, at age 45, besides not finding LOVE.

  • I think Beyonce Should play her in a Movie. (Of course after some acting classes)

  • Still gives me chills! had the pleasure 2 c and be in her company, unfortunately she never seem to be at peasce. I'm a vocalist as well; defintely understand the adulation and living in depression..unresolved hurts and pain..wore a mask...8 yrs since my last perf, but working through healing and deliverance...holdg on to Christ and realized music is who I am. My prayers for those who relate. I wish Phyllis had found her peace...can u imagine? She was in a class of her own!

  • i am a 48 yeard old woman and i grew up listenining to phylliss hyman, she never got the credit that she deserved and to suffer from depression and her pain but phyllis i understand

  • i L0VE THiS..

  • OH man, this is perfection.

  • I LOVED Phyllis Hyman....She was an amazing songstress...I met her once and was able to actually talk to her..she was statuesque and beautiful... My all time favorite is "The Answer is you"....

  • Great talent that will be missed.
