As it hasnt been played live since Cliffs death and is very personal to the other band members he was probably extremely nervous about playing it, which is why it (understandably) seems rushed and why he waved off the last part.
I understand Cliff was amazing, but to be honest if Cliff were alive now. He probly wouldnt want back in Metallica with how it is now. Its too far from what it was.

@singemfrc No, that's not true, there is distortion all the way through the original recording. It is definitely not a clean sound, it's just that Cliff plays heavier as the song continues and as he changes the tone-filter on his way-wah pedal to higher and lower frequencies

Yes Newsted is a great bassist, but so is Trujillo. Plus Rob's style is much closer to Cliff's, compared to Newsteds style. It's more fitting for Rob to play Cliff's masterpiece than for Jason.
He should have finished, Lars was ready to. Kinda sad especially since Lars probably hasn´t played that live in a looooong time. Sometimes it´s good to remember people though others renditions of their music.

Playing this with his fingers so flawlessly should now show everyone who was in any doubt, what a great bassist he is! And as much as I love Jason, Rob is really the right man to continue Cliff's legacy with Metallica! <3

why cant everyone just shut the fuck up and listen to the music, he played it out of respect for Cliff, he probably didn't play the solo because he, most likely, hasn't played it in the last 8 years and didn't want to mess it up. Yes Newsted is a great bassist, but so is Trujillo. Plus Rob's style is much closer to Cliff's, compared to Newsteds style. It's more fitting for Rob to play Cliff's masterpiece than for Jason.

@bluefukingreene I recall a few interviews saying he couldn't play Cliff's solos. He could do Ktulu, but that Orion and Pulling Teeth were beyond him or something like that.
IMO, I think he could play them, but it was really that James -wouldn't- let him. Not without his head on a silver platter...
