I was in Chicago and got to see Mr. Hargrove at The Jazz Showcase. Before the show I asked Joe Segal, the club owner, if I could step outside for a smoke. "They're yer lungs" was his response.Anyways, outside with my smoke I was joined by none other than Mr. Hargrove who also stepped out for a quick smoke before the gig. I said to him how cool it was to be 'smoking with the musicians' and he started singing that line over and over. Without saying too much, his smoke, a lot better than mine!
Marvellous sound. I have had the opportunity of assisting to 2 of his concerts many years ago. He danced on the stage and sang "September in the rain".
He was a young "lion" then, with Antonio Hart, Joshua Redman,...Energy and class.
Thanks so much and best wishes from Salamanca, SPAIN!!!.
@horbergus ...yes, two hours is alot to drive to see a show...but volunteering to drive these guys around for four days was worth the great memories! They are a great group of guys. In fact, it was just after this live recording was done in July 2007. The group came into Washington State straight from their month long tour of Europe. Then went on to do a West Coast tour.

This is heaven in a sometimes evil world driven by greed, hate, and darkness !

It's amazing how he makes that flugelhorn sound like a saxophone.

Roy plays beautifully here. Hell, he ALWAYS does. Right now, I don't believe there's a better quintet in all of jazz.
