@MrFacebuster using an actual swastika would limit where the show could be broadcast. Israel, Germany, France, etc all have very, VERY strict laws concerning the swastika and anything nazi-related. rather than edit the episodes for all those countries, it was much easier for the creators to just use some other symbol, especially since it's fairly obvious who these soldiers are and it wouldn't create any confusion.

Superman is a problem character, at his peak he's nearly unbeatable, unless you have a bunch of kryptonite or red sun radiation, which is not something that you can find anywhere, this makes him a broken character, and its wrecks the story, even J'onn has an easy to obtain weakness to fire.

You have to weaken him to make a decent story. Either that or bring in a bunch of super beings like Darkseid and Doomsday who can fight him on an equal footing.
