My first ever car in 1995. A diamond white A' reg- 1.3 base model! Wrote off in a feild in 1997. The struts that held the boot up had a habit of failing and would chomp down on you like a damn shark! Lol..
Today there seems to be more late model Tempos on the road than Contours on the road in the states, I bet there are more late Sierras than Early Mondeos in Europe
Oh and the American car was actually more sophisticated, because it had front-wheel-drive, electronic fuel injection, and MacPherson strut suspension, while you guys were stuck with the Rear wheel drive, carburetted, solid axle sierra
@kernals12 Solid axle? Sierra is IRS... the XR4 had bosch K-JET injection, Oh and front wheel drive is nothing to do with sophistocation. Its about making a compact easy to build unit.
Funny how you say the american car was better, Even if that was correct , American stuff was using live rear ends and leaf springs, Stupid strangled v8s and horrid build quality way into the late 90's.
Im not being anti american either.I grew up with my dad owning a 51 pontiac, So i do like american cars
@retrowagen1234 maybe the leaf springs went a bit too far, but MOST models didn't fuel injection and it was rear wheel drive while it's competition from Vauxhall was front wheel drive. And the Taurus didn't have a V8, It had modern suspension, which gave it a reputation for being Fun to Drive, ALL models, had EFI, and that car not only saved a nearly bankrupt Ford and revitalized Detroit, it revolutionized how cars were designed and built forever, what did the Sierra do? Huh?
@kernals12 Pretty much the same for the UK ford market. Oh and i think your a little off with your product comparisons. At the time of the sierra , Vauxhalls equivilent would have been the Carlton. Also RWD.
I also dont think the TAURUS revolutionised anything. Maybe it woke detroit up and the Us market to what could be done. But over this side of the pond, People allready had FWD , IRS , EFI , and ABS...
this is how top gear should be today not bloody stupid high price cars that one can only dream of get practical top gear and go back to cars we use every day :)
My mum had a '89 2.0i Ghia in "Tasman Blue" Lovely car! Had most the toys, sadly cut up for it's pinto engine, it was getting rusty and running rough but the guy who got it from eBay asked me for a screwdriver and sorted the rough idle Still miss it!
My mum had a red Ford Sierra 2.0L saloon when i was younger. I remember it with fondness and would love to have a 1.6 litre for my first car. Unrealistic i know but hey :L
I remember getting driven across london in a Sierra mini-cab way back in the mid 90s, which had the 1.8 turbo diesel. 300 000 miles it had on the clock! Tough enough? :-P All Fords are mechnically tough as you'll get and fairly well made. Just a shame that Fords have Ford paint work - alwasy the weak link on even today.
I must be getting old. I find Quentin Wilson telling us how to buy a Sierra far more interesting than watching Clarkson/Hammond on todays Top Gear smashing up Caravans!

Sierra has to be one of the best cars you can buy. i will never buy a new car because they are unreliable, expensive and basterds to work on. i have just bought a 87 2.0 pinto sapphire for £450. you cant go wrong!

@retrowagen1234 if it weren't for the Taurus, Ford would've gone bankrupt, once again, what did the Sierra do?

I like the Sierra, but I am surprised that Quentin Willson doesn't find it a bit 'common' for his usual taste preferences of Mercedes and Volvos...

Oddly, over here in the states when Ford brought the Taurus in '86, it was a new shape in the car world but it was a huge success from the start.

Serious rusters though.... had three in my time and only the very early Ghia (82) stayed free of rust...

Wow. I didn't know TopGear was praising Fords so much before. They've done it with the new Fiesta too.
Ford must be donating them.
