  • Wow, that end was so disturbing, haha. Love that song though. Thanks for posting this!

  • I keep listening to this song over and over... He's just got this great gentle, smoky voice that is just perfect for songs like this.

  • Just perfect... Almost made me cry... how beauty is here :)

  • Your a knuckle head thinking its not him FOR SURE you don't knw him or his music..That's the man the living legend the king on being different...

  • great song.

  • Bela canção, uma peculiar interpretação. Peter Gabriel é um artista completo, um ícone da música contemporânea com todo mérito.

  • this is what happens when the right kind of middle class white boy expresses gospel and the blues.

    No fakin, just the heart

  • beautiful

  • That's Sid McGuiness on guitar from Letterman's late show band The CBS Orchestra

  • Great! It's true: very rare! ;-) thanks to share this video...

  • f-king brilliant!

  • This has now been released on DVD. From French TV the programme and DVD release is called Chorus 1979-1981.

  • Is that Robert Fripp on the guitar?

  • @shjoed it does look like him... but iam not sure.. anyone?

  • #OMG! The top of romantic rock!

  • Wow, Sheldon from Big Bang can really play that guitar!

  • This could easily have been a Genesis song had gabriel stayed in the band...has that vibe to it.

  • my favorite song, thanx ^^

  • Mouth all dry, eyes bloodshot, Data stored on a microdot. Kicking the cloud with my moccasin shoes, TV dinner, TV news. Fear, Fear, she's the mother of Violence, Don't make any sense to watch the way she breed. Fear, she's the mother of Violence, Making me tense to watch the way she feed. The only way you know she's there Is the subtle flavor in the air. Getting hard to breathe, Getting hard to believe in anything at all But Fear.
  • "Mother Of Violence" Walking the street with her naked feet, So full of rhythm but I can't find the beat. Snapping her heels, clicking her toes, Everybody knows just where she goes. Fear, Fear, she's the mother of Violence, Making me tense to watch the way she breed. Fear, she's the mother of Violence, You know self-defense is all you need. It's getting hard to breathe, It's getting so hard to believe, To believe in anything at all.
  • TheDailyVinyl approves this video. Peter Gabriel rules.

  • Peter sos y serás el camino a seguir, ojalá las nuevas generaciones tomen tu camino, y no el del capitalismo infame que se come los nuevos talentos

  • tv dinner tv news ...... brilliant

  • OK, in hindsight he looks a little bit like RF, but it is definately SMcG.

  • The guitarist is Sid McGinnis who was in his band around that time (1978). Looks nothing like Robert Fripp.

  • Fear, fear, she's the mother of violence

    Sad and true

    Thanks

  • i hate u

  • if this makes you feel alright ...

  • the guiar player is ROBERT FRIPP, WAW.

  • and he is rubbish thats why toyah married him cos hes a gay idiot and u know it thats why ive shut u up

  • ^^ The End - Face reminds me of Genesis - Times

  • Cette chanson "fend le coeur" comme on dit.

Bien sûr, tout est dans la voix, et dans l'attidude non verbale, de PG : magnifique !

    Merci encore.

  • great song

  • This performance is strong. The ending is outrageously good.

    PG is The Man.

  • How it's possible don't love him? Did you saw what a beautiful hands he has? ... i never saw hands like this...

  • That's got to be one of the most bizarre compliments I've ever read about a singer (or anyone) ever... o_O

  • ...hahahah, it's that hands somehow represents physically the soul. If you like the hands of a person, probably you will like also the inner part of that person... So Peter Gabriel had wonderful hands... for me. You look when he plays flute also...

You all have a nice day.

  • Nothing to be good or bad with the bipolar bear thing, but freebeings said he is not,and i just said he was...and i love him more than ice cream chocolate with toasted almonds and syrup..maybe i was wrong...i don't care.. PGabriel rules!

  • i love his music and him as a humanitarian*

  • Beaucoup d'emotion cette chanson.... Magnifique

  • But he is a normal guy.Not C R A Z Y.

  • Around 3:11-3:18, Gabriel has a creepy face.

  • He's bipolar..maybe he acted like that, like representing an act when he feel sad.

  • hahah LOL! hahah that´s true! what a face..

ok my friends, I´ll be back...going to Foro sol to presence PETER GABRIEL´s gig in Mexico City...I´m the happiest man see ya! and watch my videos..

  • Peter Gabriel has a gorgeous face you have no taste. He could have modeled.

  • He is NOT bipolar either, you people are so retarded. Shut tf up

  • He is,i worked for him in his Womad shows.

Thanks indeed for your reply ;)

  • NO He is not bipolar. You are a moron; and you don't know him.

  • Ok..he's not bipolar..and i didn't work for his WOMAD shows in Canary Islands..sorry.

  • Maybe he was just sad after leaving Genesis and his divorce. And people took his isolated days as something serious.

    Take Care,Pravin

  • No need to be so angry. I'm a massive fan of Peter but even if he IS bipolar, it's not a bad thing. In fact some of the greatest writers and musicians in the world suffer from it. Beethoven and Stephen Fry but to name a few :)

  • Marrit right?

  • I meant do you know Marrit, cus she loves The Mighty Boosh..i saw on your chanel.

  • are you talking to me about the migbhty boosh? Im confused lol

And dont worry, my other comment was directed at freebeings, not you. I can tell you like Peter very much! (like me) :)

  • lol..Nothing,it's just that it thought u knew a friend i used to like named Marrit, and that u was friends with her,and told u to defend me against freebeings...but it's ok...Freebeings always wants to win :)

  • Peter Gabriel, a paternal voice, a wonderful song writer, a heart of gold pro-human rights worker. He could be bipolar, he could be crazy, he could be whatever people wants to call him, but I know if more people would think like him, this world would be more peaceful.

  • Comment removed

  • This performance is missing Robert Fripp. I wish Fripp toured with Gabriel.

  • Fantástico

  • Now I´m back in the year 1978!- i like this soo much! thanks!

  • Fear is the Mother of Violence. What a great line.

  • meraviglia! grande Peter, qui anche giovane e bello

  • Wow, the piano is really beautiful on the studio version. Is that PG himself?

  • i have to side with sparrow...i also love PG's strawberry, one of my fave Beatles songs btw, & i still own the vinyl of "all this and WWII" not to mention all the vinyl Peter has released including a Security sung completely in German...i know this doesn't mean anything 30 years later, i guess i'm just a fuddyduddy tho' given that Bach's own sons called him that i think i'm okay

  • Just when you think you can't love this man any more his voice just melts you into submission. aaaahhh!!!

(Sparrowissexy, mabey he can't make a bad song but he can sing one very badly... to my surprise... Check out stawberry fields)

  • Hmm, sorry I can't say I agree. I love his cover of Strawberry Fields! It's strained, beautiful, modest and branded with that individual 'Gabriel' quality that moves me beyond words. I love him ;)

  • I swear, Peter cannot make a bad song. He has a rare ability to lift your mood, like a hot chocolate on a cold day. Such a gifted musician in addition to being a blissfully handsome man...it leaves a permanent smile in your heart :)

  • Is he a hansom man OR WHAT! ;-)

    (and still at 58)

  • I'm glad PG got the recognition later and people have found this song. It's always been one of my favorite songs.

  • OMG i think i just peed my pants... total genius!!

  • FUCKING AWESOME !!

  • thanks for song it is very good .

  • No songs from this album made it onto his greatest hits album. Not his most commercial album but still well worth a listen.

  • His daughter sang this at Westerpark, Amsterdam in 2007, I was there =D

  • haha how he looks like singing lalalala at the end :-) nice song, one of my favourites of PG.

  • this song is beautiful. Arrangement, melody, the guitar part against the piano...but what does it for me is the lyrical integrity...because fear is the mother of violence, along with desire...fear and desire together are the parents of violence. Its a very beautiful rendering which I have never heard before. Thankyou VERY much!!!

  • Every politician running for office should play this song over and over until they can sing it back on command.

  • My Peter Gabriel number one song, the rest songs of his catalogue are treasures too.

  • MoV is one of my very favorite PG songs of all times, it's amazing that someone had a live version of this. This is really lovely. Thank you for sharing!

  • Awesome video. I just posted what I think is the best live performance of "White Shadow"... recorded for King Biscuit radio at the Bottom Line in NYC. It's only audio but I added photos from 1978 to give you something to watch while you listen. It's in my videos, just click on my name.

  • One of my favourite Gabriel songs.

  • me too, very fragile context.....

so many thanks for post this video.

  • One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Simply awe-inspiring, unique, vibrant, complex and truly breathtaking.

  • P.G.'s two albums for Atlantic Records are really under-appreciated, and there are great songs on them, like this one, D.I.Y., and the classic "Solsbury Hill".

  • Is that Tony Levin on guitar with him?

I'm not sure with all that hair :P

  • the guy on acoustic guitar is Sid McGinnis, who played guitar for Peter on the PG2 album and the following tour. He now plays in David Letterman's band. Tony Levin was there for this taping, but not for this song. They played Humdrum later and he was there for that. Timmy Cappella is on Piano and Larry Fast is on keys. Jerry Marotta, the drummer, doesn't seem to have been there.

  • Doh! At first I thought it was punk-era Robert Fripp. Some resemblance, don't you think?

  • And the Tony Banks Twins on keyboards.

  • Data stored in microdot

  • Thank you so much for sharing this! It's much better quality than I'd seen before. Do you by any chance also have "Humdrum" from the same show? I just uploaded the MOV/Humdrum combo I had (see my channel), but the quality is nowhere near this version.

  • he's not on drugs...god...he's just into the song...what is this from? what show? the quality is really good!!

    wow....what a treat....

  • Grazie Peter per questo momento che solo oggi sono in grado di vedere...allora ero un ragazzetto ma oggi posso apprezzare emozionandomi un pò, thanx to Youtube here!

  • God, in this video PG scares me! but the song is beautiful

  • took a chance to see if this song was posted...didn't expect to see this!!!ty ty for posting!!!!!

  • OMG - I can't believe this video even exists... thanks for posting.

  • I never saw pg on drugs before and I am a fan beyond fans..he is feeling no pain here..god bless!

  • I'm curious what leads you to believe he's on drugs?? A "fan beyond fans" would know he had one very bad (and very funny) experience with a hash cake and never did drugs again... this looks like a typical, sober, run-of-the-mill (and wonderful) PG performance to me. He's plenty weird enough without any chemical help!

  • ohhh i so second that and i'm so glad there are people like you to answer correctly to ignorant idiots like sketchyfolk.. 'fan beyond fans' LOL.. as for Peter and MOV.. i adore the song. and Peter is so.. Peter! as someone said below :)) thanks!

  • I third this. =)The Spencer Bright telling of the drug story is a really funny one indeed. Peter is just one of those characters where "high on life" applies.

  • thanks so much, this one very special rare song from 2ºalbum(Scratch_1978)

    great Performance,Melody

  • Great video! The ending is so.....Peter! LOL

    He's a TRUE Aquarius!

  • Lol. Yeah, he is. Unpredictable and Original!

Are you an Aquarian as well?

  • No, actually I'm an Aries.

  • One of my favorite PG songs! Funny ending!

    I love you Peter!!

  • Melany sang this in Amsterdam Westerpark, got it on cd now :) Such a beautifull song, especially with Melany

  • beautiful

  • Fantastic, my favourite out of his early solo albums. Merci beaucoup.

  • Haven't seen this in a long time. Thanks for uploading to YouTube.

  • Holy @#$%! Where is this from???

  • Wow! Where did you find this?

  • Exceptionnel !
