  • Bravo...Renee pulls this through and gets it to heaven and back....twice. But then again, Renee is magnificent as always.

  • I don't like terfel's accent (4:40 4:54 for exemple...)

  • absolutly grandios

I will write it into the next letter fort my father.

  • If they are not in costume and for the right time period it is better if you close your eyes.

  • Saddest scene ever... Poor Dona Elvira... :(

  • they make it look like so much fun!

  • Is this performance available on DVD?

  • Wrong outfits for Zerlina Masetto.

  • @pascalcs So true

  • @pascalcs: This is a gala performance, the singers are guests at the celebration! And Hong has a beautiful gown for that purpose!

  • 5:48 -his face is the best;)

  • Ha! ol' side mouth strikes again!

  • Ya decia yo que la orquesta sonaba de maravilla, grande James Levine

  • It's so funny....

  • GRAN OPERA

  • Who is the Chinese chick?

  • Did you read the video description?

  • Wow, the young Terfel in top form -- how the camera loves him! Dame Kiri also much looser and relaxed than she often is. Lovely blending of voices too in the ensemble singing.

  • What's the production doing putting Massetto and Zerlina in the same class as Dona Ana and Don Ottavio? Why rob the audience of those political nuances so important to Mozart?

  • I could be wrong, but I think that this isn't the actual opera. Merely, a scene from it during a concert of some sort. I'm not exactly sure and if I had time I would check it for both of us right now... but alas, all I can leave you with is that suggestion for now. Hope it soothes your concern a little.

  • Thanks. I hadn't noticed that before.

  • This is from the James Levine Gala, I believe.

  • It may be just a scene. the point still stands though, about the costumes.

Sad to see Jerry Hadley as Ottavio - this cant have been too long before he took his life.

  • This was 11 years before Jerry Hadley died. He committed suicide in 2007- this was 1996.

  • Ah - Indeed. Still sad though.

  • Poor Jerry.

  • Terfel`s facial expression priceless ;) "Help! Get Dame Kiri off me!"

  • Can I be Kiri when I grow up? Please? kthx.

  • I just noticed Dame Kiri and Terfel have the same hair ;)

  • Dame Kiri was in fact 52 in this clip. Her voice is clearly the best of the bunch. I love seeing Renee Fleming and Dame Kiri in the same number! They are my two favorites.

  • kiri was 50 when this was done and shes still so energetic! considering all the discussion i've seen about her vs fleming as countess almaviva, i was hoping for something they did together. i think kiri's experience really shows in this performance...she's not afraid to have fun as elvira, she has always devoured that part.

  • ehm... Yes kiri is the best, but her voice has an unnaturaly vibrato= her voice is to old. BUT!! she live this role and so, she is the best.

  • Kiri Te Kanawa is clearly the star in this group performance.

Hei-Kyung Hung doesn't seem to want to go near Kiri (wonder why)?

Renee Flemings gown looks like it's made from the same material of the curtain that comes up and down the stage of the MET. Reminds me of Scarlet O'Hara in "Gone with the Wind".

  • hahaha...very right remark on gown :) all women have very show-biz look...I suppose they were going to the party :))

  • Very, very interesting.

First of all one realizes that "Don Giovanni" always works, regardless of the stage design (is this from "Otello" or "Simon Boccanegra" or even "Tannhäuser"?) or the costumes. It's the attitude that makes the difference.

And then the acting and the singers' ability to present us with credible characters is the basis for everything. Without it the most expensive period costumes or the most revolutionary staging is nothing.

And Renée Fleming is very sexy.

  • seeing the video we can see 4 singers ( fleming, kanawa hadley and terfel) and 2 chorus singer as hong and robbins who don't move and sing only their part

  • I don't hear Masetto

  • yeah, wow. fleming looks way better nowadays. i think she lost weight! and kanawa is so funny!

  • what year is this from? renée looks dreadful, like she's going to the prom, that hairdo is atrocious and matronly

  • Terfel and Dame Kiri at the beginning might be the most hilarious thing I've ever seen!

  • Who's playing Don Ottavio?

  • the late Jerry Hadley.

  • this is fantastic!! However, the vid stops loading at 7:59... so i don't get to hear the ending of the piece :(

  • OMG JUST FABULOUS!!! What year is this from? It looks recent. They are all so superb! I especially love Kanawa as Donna Elvira!

  • kanawa, fleming and terfel are awesome and brilliant like everytime. The best concert I've ever seen.

  • This concert was really great kanawa and fleming are awsome like everytime.THEİR VOİCES ARE LİKE ANGELS and terfel...HE İS GREAT BASS BARİTONE.he proved that in that concert.

  • All these 'sound' voices... I can hear this over and over again! Who cares about authenticity without any boring 'all-the-same'voices when there are such personalities?

  • Sorry... it has to be: who cares about authenticity with all those boring 'all-the-same-voices'. By the way, listen 7:09 till the end... THAT IS WHAT ENSEMBLE SINGING IS ABOUT!!! One perfect blend of sound!

  • This is amazing! Terfel, Kanawa and Hong were brilliant!!

  • i absolutely adore kiri te kanawa! she is just wonderfull!!

  • Beautiful! I love this part! Excellent orchestra, Rénee is again TOP, Kanawa makes the intire thing! Terfel, for me, is the best of all!! BRAVOOOOOOOOO!!!

  • Anyone know who is conducting?

  • Never mind - saw the last frame and realized it was Jimmy...

  • Jimmy who?

  • James Levine

  • This was at the James Levine's 25th anniversary conducting at the MET.

  • What stupid staging...

  • This was not stage, its a concert performance.

  • Oh. Excellent. That explains it all.

  • @shoelaced the staging is genius....they get laughs despite having nothing to work with

  • Zerlina is a little dressed up for a peasant....

  • This is one of Mozarts best group pieces, in my opinion. I think the music for voice, and orchestra is fantatic!

  • @sexybcl21 I do really love this, but i think that nur stille, from the magic flute is also one of his finer works for multiple voices... lets face mozart is just amazing! :D (lol sorry for commenting on something from like three years ago)

  • Terfel`s facial expression priceless ;) "Help! Get Dame Kiri off me!"
