Normally these things sound ok with a small speaker like that so I think the amp itself needs work. The speaker you're using is fine to test the unit with. When you get it straightened out try the speaker in an enclosure. Also, if you decide to ditch the speaker you're using, go for a 4 incher, they're a good balance between sound quality and portability.
if you want to make your 386 amp sound good, get a big speaker and use a simple compressor, like the orange squeezer, to use as a preamp. and play around with different cap, resistor values. i love 386 amps easy to build, but harder to make sound good .
sound might be because of the small speaker. having small/crappy speakers not in a case really sounds like ass. i have another amp i built (not seen in my videos) with a 6 inch speaker in a wood cab, and sounds very nice. i have a question though, this amp you built is the one with 2 lm386's in a bridged configuration correct? if so, what is the ohm rating for the speaker you're using? ive heard that less than 4ohms will blow up the chips, just want some verification.
Hi, its not the crapy speaker which is the (main) problem, i tested it through a greenback also and still had the rubbish sound. Although i no longer have the speaker and i still possess my poor memory, i am pretty sure that the speaker was 4ohm.
I have made other lm386 amps and tested them through a 16ohm cab and they worked fine untill the voltage reached about 8v. At this point all hope was lost for the IC.
Well, I think they are very well played. The timing is right on (I can hear your foot tapping, I think) and the articulation is good too (especially on the Tetris theme). I haven't heard "Jailbreak" much lately and I recognized it immediately.
It's interesting that the amp sounds better because of the distortion of the video, because it sounds pretty good to me.
Thank you! thats always nice to hear! Regarding the sound on video, i admit, it doesn't bad at all but it really really does in real life. I made the MKI just after this which worked fine and sounds so much better, especially through a greenback...mmmmm....
Turns out that i had 2 resistors in each others place. I haven't had time to fix it yet so there could be more to the problem. Thanks for the comment, if it still doesn't work i will give your suggestions a go.
Try a nother speaker. It sounds nice with a 16 ohm cab.

Hey! I know the second song is "Jailbreak" by Thin Lizzy. And I know I know the first one...but I can't think of it. What is it?

Box the speaker and/or change the output caps and/or replace the IC...
