This was also the album to introduce me to New Wave. I was 7 in 1979 and Pop Muzik was the very first New Wave song I ever heard. It is still my favorite genre of music from the entire decade of the 80's.
OMG My older sister bought this at Thrifty's in L.A. where there used to be a lot of K-Tel albums. I remember me and my two younger sisters would give this record a spin quite often, dancing to M's Pop Muzik, the last track on the album. It is still in my possesion. This is the first time I've ever seen the commercial for it. Thanks for sharing a childhood memory of mine.
I had one of these back in '79 with some of the same songs, but I think it was by Ronco. It had "Makin' It" and "Heaven on the 7th Floor" and "Gold" by John Stewart. Great stuff when you were 12
I grew up with this album. Mom got it back in 1979 when were were kids and wore Sad Eyes out. I thought about getting another copy on ebay. We also had several other K-Tel and Ronco Lp's. To get all your favorites on one album was a rare treat then.
K-TEL is the shit man! They make some kick-ass compilation albums! I have a bunch on 8-track, and an album too! (Look for bright orange tapes with weird titles when you go to your thrifty stores.)
I have "Disco Fire" "Night Flight" "Reflections" "Full TILT" (on album) and "Star Power"
if it wasn't for K-Tel, no one would have ever heard of David Naugton or "Makin It" - That song was on every K-Tel record during the late 70s!! I loved that song!
@TypesALot It was the title song of his TV series, and got to #5 on the Billboard chart (four months before "Different Worlds", the theme song of "Angie" got to #18).
Even without the song, we still would have heard of David Naughton. And wouldn't you like to be a Pepper too?
This commercial I saw, but not like this. I thought "M" was at the end, "Elton John" is how I remember, but the beginning was changed...the rest i am not sure about...
I remember this too well. As a matter of fact, as a kid I saw a "Different' commercial. still similar to this, a friend/family friend had the album, gave it to me, it dissappeared, then later on I got another copy on LP, 8 TRACK TAPE (which I am playing right now) & CD. Weird thing: as I played "Blue Morning, Blue Day" as the song ended, it had an 'echo' of the ending... PART 1
I have some old K-Tel albums that I've bought at used record stores, thrift stores and flea markets. Back when they had the original recordings. Now all they have are the cheap re-recorded songs by the original artists. :(
the picture featured on Wikipedia on 'Pop Muzik" was the 12 inch single 5 minute version album cover. The actual album cover Pop Muzik was originally on features the letter M with a ring around it as it were resembling a planet in space.
the second M album (1980) was called 'the official secret's act'- a concept album based on a secret agent who worked for the government just to find out he was framed himself. very cool lyrical content and story. more darker and different music styles, yet electronic and experimental. you should check it out. it's good, but not a 'pop' album...
I know your right, but the song I remember got radio play in the spring of 80, just like Michael Jackson's Off The Wall album, half of which got radio play in late 79-early 80.
I have this album on 8 track and record and lots of these songs and artists were not on the album such as Bonnie Pointer, Suzi Quatro. I gues they were false advertising lol.
This ad is for the American version. The Canadian version had April Wine, Nick Gilder, Joe Jackson and a few others whom I cannot recall. Would this be the version that you own?
