There is some crazy violence in the Old Testament, no doubt. But the peaceful teachings of Jesus abrogate this violence. The quran goes in the opposite direction. Muhammad (piss be upon him) started out with some nice peaceful things to say, but then abrogated those peaceful teachings with violent verses. The few remaining peaceful verses only apply to fellow muslims.
In the bible, there are specific sentences that were said by evil people, and the bible just reported it to us, and of course the bible al ready mentioned the story for each one, sometimes there are symbolic meanings, and sometimes they refer to mistakes of good men, but no single word in the bible can ever allow killing or murdering others, I just wonder when people like the guy who posted this video will stop making lies and start actually reading the bible...

The Old Testament is NOT a guide to ethics, since the New Testament is the New Covenant. Old Testament recounts many historical misdeeds by Israelites and few Christians take it seriously except as interesting matter of historical record. Christianity starts with Jesus. Historically, Christians have engaged in a lot of violence of course, but definitely not with the blessing of Jesus. They don't get shortcut to Heaven for it, trust me. Whereas Allah loves his jihadists as much as prophets.

There is some crazy violence in the Old Testament, no doubt. But the peaceful teachings of Jesus abrogate this violence. The quran goes in the opposite direction. Muhammad (piss be upon him) started out with some nice peaceful things to say, but then abrogated those peaceful teachings with violent verses. The few remaining peaceful verses only apply to fellow muslims.

Personally my view is the West is a bit of a mess these days. Capitalism created so many crappy products and shops and fast food stores. I really hate all this stuff.
It's the price of freedom perhaps.
I would like to live in a more scholarly society, and i think islam has the potential to provide that. I just don't agree with some of the very harsh restrictions on things like
- music
- philosophy
- science
- arts
which should be free.
The West has lost its DISCIPLINE.

oh i know Islam was great civilization between 9th and 13th centuries - centre of world's learning in many many spheres.
Chemical apparatus - flashs, decanters etc - are islamic inventions.
Astrolabe was perfected by Islamic scholars.
Algebra - the greatest contribution perhaps.
Many great philosophers and poets.
I think islam needs to allow it's people some liberty to CREATE IDEAS, without being called "heretics"! And stop worrying whether music is evil - it obviously isn't!

I fully accept that terrorism is unIslamic. There is no justification for it in Islam.
Just like in Christianity, there was never a justification for the inquisition. That was thoroughly evil, and there will be several popes and cardinals in hell as a result!
Islam can create very civilized and scholarly societies i think! But it should allow a little more freedom in the non-religious spheres - philosophy, music, art, education, science - and then all would be good perhaps..

ok, here's a question. Is it true that in Madrassas in Saudi Arabia there is a lot of memorization of the qu'ran - instead of interpretation of it?
In Western education we used to make children memorize everything (prayer books, mathematical formulae, poems), but we don't do it anymore. Would that possibly explain why Saudi Arabia and other arab gulf states don't have such brilliant universities...because memorizing is not a very effective method to develop the brain!

Yes, i had seen statistics which showed that a lot of people in muslim societies were happy. Too much knowledge and freedom - like we have in the West - can be a bad thing for the human spirit. If you have no spirituality at all, that is a shame.
I hope you will agree though that religious fanatacism can go to far and become a kind of insanity.
Like when the Taliban demolished 2000 year old Buddhist statues.
Or when classical music is BANNED because it is "unIslamic".

I think you will find Christians have a low rate of suicide, most suicides are atheists. Understandably, since there is no penalty on death for an atheist, it really doesn't matter much.
Saudi Arabia enforces religion on all its citizens, so it's little wonder they all follow it very seriously. Does that make it true?
I think Saudi Arabia has MANY MANY disadvantages which outweigh the suicde rate drop.

And then the bible stories serve as a guide for that. There's a lot of interpretation involved and people come to slightly different conclusions. But sh'ariah is no different there (since e.g. "there is no compulsion in religion" said allah, but "whoever turns his back on religion - kill him" said Muhammad. Who do you believe! Allah or Muhammad!!).
The bible is not a "sacred object" for Christians, it's just a guide. Jesus HIMSELF is the closest equivalent to qu'ran!

In Christianity there is a concept of the "holy spirit" which is supposed to occupy each human being - that's why they talk about "receiving the holy spirit", which just means becoming aware of your own conscience / moral responsibility. It means there is another source of "divine knowledge" which muslims don't have:
The inner being. By contemplating / reflecting, Christians are supposed to be able to feel what is right to do, based on God-given powers of judgement & morality.

Even in earliest Christian texts, the central message never changed - Jesus lived sinless life & gave himself up for mankind. The Old Testament contains more than 2 MILLION killings ordered by God, not including 65 cities without counting the inhabitants and a global flood!
The Bagavad Gita of Hindus is just as bad - it starts of peaceful enough, but quickly becomes a narrative about glorious wars and conquests between kings and emperors.
The only exceptions to the general rule are the Christian N.T. and writings of Buddha, which are both almost completely peaceful.

Ask your Imam about the Banu Quryza tribe! Or better still, do some research yourself. The source of this story is the historian Ibn Ishaq, and others. Some of Ibn Ishaq is regarded is nonsense today, but i don't think this story is. it was justified in terms of qu'ranic law for war...since some of the tribe had been traitors, the judgement was to extinguish the whole tribe. This pattern was used many times in Islamic history.
Every other religion has done similar things.

pro TWO state solution in Israel,
pro-Jesus as great role model especially for children, but against most organized Christian movements e.g. Catholicism
pro America but NOT pro-NeoConservative foreign policy (i hate Wolfowitz etc)
anti-Some Islamic rules e.g. preventing muslims converting to other religions, preventing preaching, stonings etc.
I think Jesus is better example than Muhammad.

Have you heard of the Banu Qurayza tribe? SOME of them plotted with Medinans against Muhammad. After the Medinans were repelled, Muhammad turned his attention to this tribe. A judge ordered that the men be executed and the woman and children given into slavery. The adolescent boys were checked to see if theyhad pubic hair, and if so they joined the men and were beheaded. It took a whole day, and between 600 and 800 people were slain.
Jesus had put a stop to this nonsense.

The Old Testament is NOT a guide to ethics, since the New Testament is the New Covenant. Old Testament recounts many historical misdeeds by Israelites and few Christians take it seriously except as interesting matter of historical record. Christianity starts with Jesus. Historically, Christians have engaged in a lot of violence of course, but definitely not with the blessing of Jesus. They don't get shortcut to Heaven for it, trust me. Whereas Allah loves his jihadists as much as prophets.

"The sun rises and the sun sets, AND HURRIES BACK TO WHERE IT RISES"
Reading the Bible you have the image that you can fall off the "edge" of the "four corners" of the world. And that the sun rotates around the earth.. Am I lying?

And the verse I related to you last was [Psalm (93):1].. Other verses suggest the earth is supported by structural pillars: [Job (38):4] and [Job (9):6].. Though there's verse the declares the earth "circle", but are circles 2D or 3D?
