The story of Chile from 1969 to 1975 is fascinating. Because of the emotional issues connected to the disappearances of family members, much of this History is misrepresented. In 1973 when the Coup took place, Chile was at great risk of falling into severe economic turmoil. There is no question in my mind that Chile was better off with Pinochet as their Head-of-State as opposed to Allende. Allende would have destroyed Chile if he had had more time.

As an American I am ashamed that the people who we elect in office think they have the right to decide what they think is best for other countries. And you are an asshole for being an apologist of a man who brutalized a country for nearly twenty years. What is ironic about your statement is that it is actually Pinochet who is more comparable to Stalinists, Ba'athists, and Nazis. Mass rapes, thousands of disappeared people, torture.
Pinochet is a torturing murderer, inexcusable, but the Spaniards have more buried bodies and skeletons too. Nor are the North Americans. Kissinger and the Americans were involved planning the coup. Why don't they go after that thug too? Because any means are justified when wiping out socialism. It's amazing how many so-called intelligent people can't distinguish between communism and socialism.

Maybe it's because here in Europe we work differently. FIRST you get elected, THEN you rule the country not the other way round.
Another thing - amid the violence, torture, murder of all opposition (or do you also deny those?) the 75% of votes in 1978 is completely invalid.
