damoneugenerich certainly part of a piece of art is in the way it is presented. I especially liked the last suggestion with the rust effect. Thanks for the vid
@sharonrubio - You liked the effect? hmm.. I don't know. I just wanted something that didn't get in the way of the piece. I thought the frame didn't add to the piece but I didn't like the rust effect. But I hear what you are saying. And what you say is true, presentation ultimately is a part of the art. I guess in the past I have over and under-framed pieces and it didn't help present the piece well. But then again, I've seen questionable frames on art loaned to museums for retrospectives. eek.
I couldn't disagree more. It should never be about different ways to show case your art. It should be about the art itself. I realize I'm a formalist. My background is in classical painting, but the piece: image, subject matter, and form should be the focus of the piece. Unfortunately, this medium which could be oil painting or painting with acrylics to make art is really reduced to "craft." I've not solved the framing issues, but standardizing the paintings helps focus on the work itself.
@damoneugenerich To say "reduced to craft" is elitist and untrue. Craft is the honing of skills that make art possible. When you say "this medium" do you mean encaustics or incorporating framing into the art work. The painted rust frame was clearly part of the art in this instance. Artistically it is a legitimate choice. Encaustic paint is also a legitimate art medium that has been around for 1000s of years. It is a beautiful medium and many great artist use it.
@Kaththee if elitist means has acquired classical principals through basic education in art. I guess that fits. "Artistically a legitimate choice" is hardly populist rhetoric. And frankly neither you nor I will have anything enlightening in the discussion between the poles. I've seen the encaustic portraits of Roman-Egyptian art so accusing me of not knowing my art history would be the same thing you are acusing me of, Elitism.
@damoneugenerich I never said that you didn't know your art history. I just made a general statement in defense of the medium for the benefit of anyone who took your criticisms seriously. Had I impugned your education lets say by accusing you of being a blowhard who maybe spent two semesters at a for profit art school before flunking out then maybe I could be accused of being elitist , but I didn't say that.
