  • What are the lyrics? I can't find them anywhere online, but I love this song more than anything in the world and desperately want to know what the lyrics are! :)

  • one of the highlights on THE SHINING soundtrack.

  • I never knew the vocalist's name till now. Just that it was the Henry Hall Gleneagles Hotel Band. Cool!

  • Beautiful song ..... =)

  • I heard this beautiful song in a 1945 B/W movie called 'I Live in Grosvenor Square', a British war romance film, on the weekend. The song reminded me so much of the old romantic songs my parents used to sing me from a bygone era - I can't really listen to these war era songs now as I get too upset. Of course upon hearing this one throughout the movie I got terribly sentimental and became quite teary but I had to search for it as it touched me so much.

Thanks for posting it ever so.

  • It is a shame that back then they did not have proper technology to preserve those brilliant interpretations.

  • I just watched episode of Waltons, Episode called HOME FRONT, a 2 parter so the 2nd part will be tomorrow. Jason sings this song alone and then with a buddy (Lipinsky) with his guitar. JUST BEAUTIFUL. Also this song was on the walton tv website. Apparently it was a 2nd world war song. I watched it today JUNE 15/10 2ND PART TOMORROW ON 16/06/10

  • @grace230608

Just caught that Episode and had to find the song,Glad to see I wasn't the only taken by it.

  • On an episode of the tv series "The Waltons" many years ago one of the Walton kids, Jason, sang this song while he accompanied himself on the guitar. I'd never heard it until then and then again in "The Shining." It doesn't matter when a song was composed and produced because a good one will be good always. This is one of those good songs.

  • What a fantastic song! thx twiddlybobby.

  • Ah, yes. You've made me very happy. I've been searching for this song for the last 29 years. There are several Hall compilations out on CD, but Hall with Gleneagles has been elusive to say the least. So, thank you. I look forward to listening to everything you post.

  • where can i get the cd?

  • I wish I knew where to get this particular one. Last time I checked was around 1998, on the Pearl label, but it was already out of print.

Perhaps it's time to start digging again.

  • First heard in the movie Shining. It's beautiful.

  • Can someone add the lyrics to the song here?

  • Here's 98% of it.

When shadows fall, and leaves whisper day's ending, my heart's forever wending home.

When crickets call, my heart is forever yearning, once more to be returning home.

When hills conceal the setting sun, stars begin a' peeping one by one.

Night comes (unintelligible), and though fortune may forsake me, sweet dreams will ever take me home.

  • When shadows fall, and trees whisper day is ending,

my thoughts are ever wending home.

when crickets call, my heart is forever yearning,

once more to be returning home.

when the hills conceal the setting sun,

stars begin a' peeping one by one.

Night covers all, and though fortune may forsake me,

sweet dreams will ever take me home.

    (hope this helps.)

  • Hey, I tried. LOL! Thanks for correcting.

  • i can't get enough of this song!! is there any way you can send it to me??

  • G-D, how beautiful... what a comforting song. Take me back to the Halcyon Days...

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Heaven!

  • As shadows fall!!!!

  • This song was also in Stanley Kubrick's movie "The Shining" to an eerie effect

  • If anyone knows anything about Maurice Elwin would you let me know as he was a relative of mine who I know very little about

  • sweet dreams will always bring me home!!!!!!

  • Just beautiful!

  • I heard this one before, but it was downloaded. Its was my 5th song of Henry Hall! I like this one specially, because it is so slow and calme. Thank You for shearing!

  • I love those 'high headed'(?) early thirties Trilby's. I find old ones like this are hard to find. What a huge hit this was. I have Jack Payne on 'Regal', weeks before he left the BBC.

  • I have a much played Ambrose version of this, but this is so nicely "cleaned up",and Henry Halls band and Maurice Elwin are both EXCELLANT!

  • No wonder my favourites section was recently overflowing so that I had to empty it - I can't stop adding. Wonderful strings in this one!
