  • the table where they're playing... is it one of those that were removed from wash. sq. by any chance?

  • @MassimoPiai Yes I actually believe it was. It is located in the Village Chess Shop in New York. You can pay to get "lessons" there.

  • ITS RDY YET?

  • Did yoou finnaly fineshed the movie? I´m collecting documentary movies about chess for a chess festival in Mexico city, maybe you wonna participate?

  • this man brought my rating up about 200 poiints after one lesson.

  • I feel fortunate to have captured Richard doing what he loves to do best. Music by Tristain Perich

  • Yes, it is true. They have a memorial note book set up at the Village Chess Shop

  • Is it true Richard passed away?? =O

  • what up? did you ever finished the doc yet?

  • A typical grandmaster would never make comments like that about a player's moves. Not even Fischer or Alekhine who are extremely temperamental would. Those are surface comments, chess is all about the plan. Your plan and your opponent's plan. Don't expect to see great talents shaped by this guy.

  • wow I cant believe it Richard is on Youtube. I go to the chess shop every so often... planning on going tomorrow =)

  • some one needs to shoot this fool.please!hes a 1100 rated player who the fuck can he coach

  • Sure, the man's got a sharp tongue...but, gees! He's a New Yorker!! They'll scare the hell out of you, but usually have big hearts behing the snarl. I'll bet he's one hell of a coach. His approach would be hard for me to get used to, certainly, but chess is not a game (read: art) for sissies, anyway.

  • look like HDTV?

  • Oh yeah I really learnt alot from this. lol ... chess will never be popular on a worldwide level like poker because it reeks of spiteful pathetic characters. Until good chess players learn to embrace other chess players on all levels with kindness and encouragement (like they do in poker) it'll always be a dead duck. It's a shame that so much dishonour has been brought upon the best game in the world by those who seek to be total arrogant shitheads for their own sick satisfaction. Chess is dead.

  • lol. i can't speak for chess on a whole, but richard is hardly spiteful or pathetic for that matter. what you see in this trailer is what the editor allows to be shown. please don't disrespect a man or your won intelligence by making a judgement based on edited exposure to him.

  • Hi, armleg: no offence intended to Richard personally, it's just that in my experience, poker players (in general) are a lot more friendly and helpful than chess players and this video doesn't really help to change that image much. I'm NOT an expert chess player (1950 elo) but I'm not bad at the game. Again no offence to Richard personally, I just think poker has better image than chess in general. But chess will have a popularity boost once the Fischer film comes out I'm sure.

  • u don't know jack iv seen this guy play in the village he is a very good chess player, and as for poker its nothing compared to chess, chess takes skill poker is 95% luck

  • Chess is war. The game almost requires a combative spirit. Buddies can sit down and push pawns to pass the time and jog conversation. If you're serious about tournaments and such, you almost need to be a jerk.. that's how generals are. It's the psychology of kingdom vs. kingdom. Read Sun Tzu's THE ART OF WAR and you'll see how much of war is mental slings and taunts at the enemy in melee combat.

  • hilarious..."chess will never be popular on a worldwide level like poker"...do you even UNDERSTAND how wild a statement that is? I am stunned by it. You may want to step back and reassess it. It's similar to saying "Shakespeare will never be as popular as Dan Brown".

  • I've played against him at the Chess shop on Thompson St. when I used to go to NYU. He's full of personality, great person...great chess player.

  • i've seen him at the shop. looking froward to the doc!

  • how is the doc coming along? R U going to be able start working on it up again in dec?

  • I have played many times with a fellow just like this man, and i cant wait to see your doc. God this is going to be awesome.

  • When is doc going to be complete. Let me Know.

    PEACE

  • Sorry I have had to put the doc on the back burner as I have recieved funding to complete another documentary the BubblegumKing. com - I don't expect to get to it until 2008. Thanks for inquiring. -DR

  • ...and yes it does just kill me that I have not been able to get back to this project especially when I visit my youtube account and see the amount of hits this chess piece has recieved. I see lot's of film making opportunities in the area of chess that have yet to be explored, to be continued...-DR

  • Please, please, please finish this baby. If you don't you'll regret it for the rest of your life. And we probably will, too.

  • Yes, sorry you know, I may be slow but I always go through with what I say I'm going to do... I plan on shooting some footage this coming summer in the famous chess rows in San Francisco. Capping it of course with East Coast footage. slow and steady wins the race, so stay tuned!!

    best.

  • I'd beat his old scenile ass all over the chess board!! :Dahahhahaha

  • what's your rating?

  • He's nothing!!! His king was wide open in a corner!!Jackass

  • That looks awesome! AWESOME! I'd gladly watch that

  • Lol he looks like he's got a screw loose to me! Scary twitching!! :S

  • So is this Doc real or not? and if it is when is it coming out?! jeeez someone must have the answer!

  • Yes it's taking me forever and I do apologize. This short film I was to direct got really messed up and I had to end up bowing out of that project. That took lot's of time and energy away from me. I've also been busy finishing up my current documentary The Bubblegum King, While it's still on hold I'm going to start posting up some more chess shots soon. so stay tuned and thanks for being patient.-Dino R.

  • richie can never be anything for the simple reason he refuses to play anyone of = strength. it's sad. he spends all day playing with people who cant make him better and then tries to convince himself he's superior.

  • You have a nerve to call this patzer a master.Hes one of the worst players in the village chess shop.WOW! 50 yrs and your still a BUM!!! Also, this guy cant stand to lose I cracked him about 6 or 7 striaght then he went wild and the pieaces went flying. If you want lessons go across the street to the chess fourm.the chess shop is full of patzers.

  • another thing about the chess shop is that you are crammed into a small space, and it is usually difficult to get into a seat or out of one.

  • Yo I'm looking for a good game, what's your rating?

  • Waht's his name?

  • I'm friends with richard also! He's a great guy....and yes...a quite a character! :)

  • i tell ya what, don't pay $30 an hour for this guy. spend your mullah on a chess dvd or a book. you'll learn more about chess there than from this melodramatic prick. 50 years in chess and he's still a nobody. a bad investment that you dont have to be part of. you're in check!

  • Nicely put together film,he looks like a great character.Love the quote after 10 years i started to show some promise, really cool.

  • His comments show he has no clue himself. Also the way he smashes the pieces. Tragic.

  • Yes, I'd like to know his full name and USCF/Fide ratings.

  • What is this guy's full name?

  • no, he doesn't suck. You can tell by the way he moves pieces. And white pieces are undeveloped too, that's because they're still in the opening (1.30 it's a theorical variation, good for blitz).

  • In this video, black's pieces are totally undeveloped. This guy sucks.

  • what happen? did he beat you? Sore loser....

  • Richards a character. I've known him for 8 years.

His antagonism is refreshing in todays society of covert hostility,

Just like the clerk who works at the chess shop

  • lmao fawk that trainer ill buy a book and save my time

  • He'd just be one of the weirdos at the club I used to play at. He'd be the butt of many jokes, I'm sure.

  • Yeah hope the full doc will be posted some day.

  • His face reminds me both of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bent Larsen. Check out recent pictures of the latter gentleman (famous chess grandmaster) to compare.

  • haha how hilarious.he is pretty mean as a coach!! hope to see your doc

  • I live in NY and konw this guy personally. He is just a shadow of his old self, but he once beat Roman Dzinzihashvili, a GM that trained both Karpov and Kasparov.

  • i took lessons from richie some time ago! he is kinda mean when u play him but he's a great teacher and away from the chess board he's the nicest human being you would ever want to meet!

  • i 2nd the emotion!

  • Great trailer, i'm very interested in seeing the whole documentary.

Why is this flagged as in apropriate for younger audiances?

  • Yeah, I'm not really sure myself. I can only guess some sort of rebellious act...

  • i think what makes it interesting is he talks more like a boxer than a chess player. most chess players sound a lot more boring. nice to have some life injected into the game. doubt whether he`s that good though!

  • Sorry folks, I've definitely beaten this guy, would suit you guys better to watch a documentary about some other chess players...GM's for instance

  • Nice video.

I wouldn't like him to be my chess teacher. Too mean!

  • lol i can take him down

    im only 1853

  • Very nice. I am curious to the complete doc.

  • I've played a lot of organized chess and seen every chess movie there is and this is documentary is just awesome...I would like a copy of the finished film. Chess is such a visualy pleasing game to play and there is music in it, well captured. The slow passing of the learned game from the older men to the teenager is so true, chess is almost like an oral tradition that's been around since the building of the first nations.

  • What a character :)

  • "Maybe after 10 years of playing I started showing some promise." Awesome comment.

  • WOW GREAT VIDEO

  • would love to see this video in it's entirety

  • nice

  • Fantastic short!

  • that geezer is owning on the younglings
