The blues has something that blues-rock doesn't. The blues is haunted by ghosts of the past. It's the long history and feeling in the blues that puts it on a whole higher level. After really getting into the blues I started to see blues-rock music in a different light. Take Led Zeppelin for example. I now listen to their songs and can't help but think how derivative and gimmicky they sound. I agree with deadboys1010. The Stones got closest.

the stones, zepplin, clapton, and mccartney were influenced directly by old blues mucisians like muddy waters, johnson, etc. That is what they were raised listening to, it is the fundamental basis of rock n roll.....i suppose that is why they did cover some of their songs, a lot of their songs actually. i think clapton did a whole record of johnson songs. Even rockabilly was directly influenced by delta blues style guitar and boogie woogie piano from like pinetop perkins..

Blues-rock is NOT blues. its an adaption. Aerosmith and Zep are not playing in the same tone, mindset, and style as Johnson and Muddy Waters. does the point need to be argued?

the closest thing a rock band trying to capture the blues soul is The Rolling Stones all the way up to Sticky Fingers (minus Their Lords, that was psychedelic). they've lost it over the years.

YES, dazed and confused was an old blues song, but they did have permission to use it, and they have a ton of original stuff that can be viewed as an old blues song, when really, they wrote it themselves.

Wow. Let's hear it for Mr. Jones! Nice post. For what it's worth, Whole Lotta Love is actually a Muddy Waters song called "You Need Love." The lyrics are almost identical. Anyway, this guy, J.D - is without a doubt the most talented lyricist out there today. I almost wish the band would slow down a bit so you could hear everything he's singing instead of having to read it off the CD. GREAT AMERICAN BAND!

You are a damn idiot. Led Zeppelin started out as a blues cover band. Nobody is saying they didn't cover blues tunes. Heres the trick though Zeppelin perfected them. The songs that they did write were phenomenal. If you don't have respect for zeppelin then you have no knowledge of music.

Zeppelin's versions of Willie Dixon's tunes were unlike anything that had come before them. Lots of British rock bands were influenced by Mississippi delta blues. It was generally a starting off point for many 60's musicians. Zeppelin took those influences, along with rockabilly, soul, funk, folk, etc. and forged their own sound.
