  • I agree with TheScorpionSquad" this is one of few literary works that High School students should have to memorise!!! It is a shame that we no longer remember the price paid for "Freedom" by this country. And yes, Godd bless all those who have or are fighting for the freedom of this country!

  • my name is poppy xxxxxxx May they rest in peace

  • Remembrance Day. I am glad this is one of the only videos on youtube that hasn't received a dislike. The men and women that fight for our countries deserve our unwavering respect and gratitude. May they never be forgotten.

  • Freedon is not free. God Bless our Warriors!

  • This poem is the reason why in Canada and Britain, people wear poppy flowers on their shirts on Remembrance Day (Veterans Day in USA). Every year in elementary school, we would have an assembly commemorating the day where we'd read this poem. It's imperative that we remember the sacrifices of those that came before us so that we won't ask those that will come after us to do the same.

  • Out of all the poems that come to mind this one is always near, maybe because the constant reminder of poor boys in foreign lands laying down their lives.

    Bless all out soldiers

  • Thank you !

  • I came to this same video a year ago. Thanks for posting!

  • When I went to school in a one-room school house (grades 1-8 with one teacher), we had to memorize "In Flanders Fields" and we recited it in unison on 11/11 just before 11 a.m. and our two minutes of silence. I have never forgotten and still shed tears when I hear it read. I appreciate that poem and our veterans very much.

  • MY GREAT GRANDFATHER WROTE THIS :) just found that out pretty proud and honoured

  • @caleighbc Must have been quite a man Colonel John McCrae, Medical Corps, who died of wounds on sustained on Flanders Fields, never to see his beloved Canada again. Your pride is bound in a family of honour....

  • Lest we forget! ✿Remembrance Day 11/11/11✿

  • Reading this at my school Veteran's day assembly, wish me luck.

  • i remember when i was in year six, on this very day i performed this peom, and for some reason these words have stayed with me through out the ears, rest in peace, our heros.

  • R.I.P

  • R.I.P.

  • Fun Fact: the writer of this poem was actually in shock when he was writing this. He was on ambulence duty when his buddy, a few feet away from him, was hit with a shell and his other friend picked his peices up so he could get buried. When he was going back, he started to write.

  • I am a student i am learning the peom

  • Both my Great Grandparents fought in WW1, both their sons fought in WW2 and My uncle is currently fighting in Afghanistan and the one thing that fills me with Rage is when some stupid American Kid tells me America saved our Asses,.

    Rule Brittania

  • I always loved and cherished this poem as it really says it all. May God bless all soldiers and their families, not only on Remembrance Day, but always.

  • @majical11 remembrance day is to let us remember all of our fallen soldiers not just WWI. WWI, WWII, Korea, Afghanistan i know im leaving quite a few out but i just dont feel like writing them all.

  • Unless you are a true vetran that served and fought for your country; Canada. Shame on you for acting like you have took place in the horror that happened, when you are sitting there and saying; not feeling, what occured. God bless John McCrae; we love you...

  • i hope this will never happen again..

  • Dont forget our sisters who have died in war too!

  • @JimroidSoldier ...WWI was composed of men.

  • My Grandpa served in the second world war...I didn't get to see him , he died when i was was young.

I agree though this is the most moving poem I've ever heard, and they should teach it to the new generation so they do not forget all the brave men and woman who unfortunately gave their lives for our freedom, which we take for granted. I'm not saying everyone takes it for granted.

Remembrance day makes me proud to be Canadian and how lucky we are to have a time of peace...

  • i miss you papa

  • It is truely amazing how many people here are so brain-washed as to believe that Britain was fighting WWI for freedom and democracy against an evil and god-less enemy. Are those people not interested in the truth? Are they so lazy that they let other people do the thinking for them? Don't they ever pick up a book from time to time? Or do they find comfort in the blissful ignorance of the majority? Depressing!!

  • this is a deep poem

  • Before I know this poem, I heard the song from Libera called "We Are the Lost" excerpt from this poem. This poem is classic with great historical value.

  • i know its not as good, but heres my war poem: r.i.p the fallen. dont glorfy the dead. take from them the lesson, of war in its most vile end. the point of no return for the son, for the mother left who grieves. let them shout. let them make you hear the horrid end. of flesh fallin from the bone, and muscle torn beneth the skin. of crys from the deepest soul, and sobs from the wounded left. hear that never agen we shud let them shout. r.i.p the fallen thers no glory from the dead
  • I think everyone as ever misunderstands poetry. Poetry is there to be appreciated, but it is not some kind of clear cut document. People are free to find whatever reasonable meaning in poetry they like. Everyone is welcome to their own opinion.

  • "We are the Dead. Short days ago. We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields."

  • A poem by an ordinary Canadian soldier that is today read out all over the world on Remembrance Day - from Sydney to Manchester and from Vancouver to Aukland, I remember been taught this poem at school, we will remember.

  • May you find respite from the horrors, may your loved ones find comfort in the Truth, may you wander in the Glory, may you forever be remembered, may you rest in Peace. Thank you for laying down your life so that I may have one. God Bless You All.

  • Lest us remember, god bless you for your bravery we bow now to your sacrafice

  • sing along

un fladers fields the poppies blow between the crosses row on row that mark our place and in the sky the larks still bravely sing fly scars heard admid the guns below

  • oatesn- Actually, the torch symbolizes the continuation of the fight for the continued freedom of the generations of people to come.

  • oatesn -Actually, the torch symbolizes the fight for the continued freedom of the generations to come.

  • This poem always brings tears to my eyes. Our nation has given a lot of young men to the horrors of war and Canada did not need to. But I am proud of these sacrifices they define us as a people. Not a selfish people, these men died for an Empire they loved, they died for those they loved, they bled blood that wasn't theirs and fought battles that were not theirs to fight. They died for a cause that did not belong to them. Recognise them for what they are. Heroes.

  • McCrae was a medic so he was trying to save people

  • @PuckSlapper83 Thanks that answers my question. He was more than just a poet. A great man.

  • So was John McCrae actually a bad ass soldiers. Or was he a pacifist wimp who sat on his ass all day, wrote poetry, and complained about trench foot?

  • @MajBlood He was a medic...

  • @AskG0d Yes who doesn't know that? You didn't answer my question to whether or not he was bad ass.

  • I also thank you for this timeless, very deep and thought-provoking video.

The torch of war is still being thrown around today, and the young soldiers

that are killed in battle don't get a chance to grow old. Some things, like war, never

change, but wouldn't it be heavenly if they did!

  • They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

    We will remember them.

  • i sang this my freshman year......i started to cry

  • Thanks so much for this...

  • can somebody explane what the wrighter means with ''If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleet, though poppies grow in Flanders fields.'' i do not understand the true message to the people of it.

  • @DutchPetriot It is we shall not Sleep! And the torch that he asks us to catch is the torch that lights up the continuation of the war . Against what he was taught

to be the evil \godless enemy

  • Certainement!

  • here's my poem for the dead: r.i.p the fallen. dnt glorfy the dead. take frm them the lesson, of war in its most vile end. the point of no return for the son, for the mother left who grieves. let them shout. let them make you hear the horrid end. of flesh fallin from the bone, and muscle torn beneth the skin. of crys from the deepest soul, and sobs frm the wounded left. hear that never agen we shud let them shout. r.i.p the fallen thers no glory from the dead
  • A moving poem that should be taught in schools so the younger generation don't grow up thinking all wars are like playing computer games. Wars are bloody, nasty, but sometimes unavoidable. Our great armed forces fight to protect the innocent and weak and to protect our freedom and democracy. It is the same now as it was then - only the enemy and geography have changed.

It's certainly one of the best War poems written. Can't imagine what they must have gone through. God bless them...

  • Yes but when schools are so stuck up the rich kids and high graded students, a veteran came to school when i was there i had really low grades but the teachers didnt care about us only the ones at the top. if schools are going to teach this then they should get rid of the classes that are still in existance today as much as in the past.

  • I know how you feel. I also had low grades because of bullying from students and teachers. I learned more from books and putting myself through extra subjects and night school than all my years at school. Out of all the teachers - only two were people you could really learn from.

  • i couldn't agree more, the part where it says we are the dead, short days ago we lived..... that always chokes me up. and i can relate to what your saying about school grades, i got bullied as well and found myself reading the textbooks outside of lessons i was that interested. it angers me when people get ridiculed for wearing poppy's by others sayin you actually bought THAT etc...

as i say every year, we will remember them.

  • @TheScorpionSquad It was tought to us amongst other war poetry when I was in school, a very emotional poem.. A timeless poem that should be shown to everyone

  • @TheScorpionSquad they already teach it in my school

  • @TheScorpionSquad Such a senseless waste of lives . I hope that something like this may never occur again.

  • It's read every Rememberance Day in Canada, in schools, too.

  • @TheScorpionSquad I was privileged to learn this school 20 years. Has never left me from it. A fitting tribute.

  • @TheScorpionSquad I think you should credit the younger generation with knowing the difference between real life and a computer game! Many of the WW2 games I played inflamed my interest of that time period and helped me appreciate how horrendous it must have been for them (thus furthering my respect for them). Obviously it comes no where near making me know what war is like, but that's true of every person who has never been. You shouldn't generalize computer games as crafting simpletons!

  • You've replied to the wrong comment. I never denegrated or disrespected this video, poem or the soldiers who lost there lives in WWI and others. Please check comments carefully before responding.

  • Thank you for putting this up here, my great-uncle lies somewhere in the fields of Flanders, resting place unknown, killed in action, aged 18. September 1918

  • Breathtakingly beautiful and so very tragic.

  • They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn, At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

  • And who exactly is "taking over"?

  • These men gave their lives and you cant spare 10 minutes to watch this? Shame on you!

  • Rest In Peace young men...you will never be forgotten

  • It makes you think how these men would give their lives for others freedom . There is no greater deed. It must have been so scary.

  • i hope thats a joke

  • Lest we forget.

  • RIP

  • Written by John McCrae, Canadian officer who died in 1918.

  • so so movin thank you for this

    Awesome.Will all ways be loved

  • Outstanding

  • Awesome.

  • That has got to be one of the most beautiful, albeit upsetting, pieces of literature I have yet come across.

    Endearing.

  • lest we forget these brave souls.

  • Written by Capt. John Mcrae. Canadian.

  • IM READING THIS TOMOZ FOR MY ASSEMBLY WITH MY CLASS!! .we all have diff parts n im reading that =]

+ One Moment Of Silence Please +

    Thanks-

    ...

  • that's a bit harsh. you could have put your point across in a more diplomatic way.

  • MustNotRead, Well I am not a Brit to invaide devide loot & dstroy every country diplomaticaly. Where ever the evil Brits went, they plunted the seeds of death devision & destruction. Look at the Middle Eat, India, Kashmir Pakistan Afghanistan Iran & Africa. They fucked the diplomaticaly with no one challenging them. Fuck Britain & their dead.

  • great poem adn one of the only poems that really touched my heart.

    We will remember them

  • @TheLittleMissRandom1 and I heard children say the poem as they put little crosses in at Hartfield in Sussex.

  • we will remember them.... i have an unusual love of poppies and every picture in my living room is of poppies... oils, watercolours and cross stitches.... every one an original... 18 plus... i and my family will never forget the sacrifice of the fallen in both the Great War, 2Nd WW, Northern Ireland, The Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan

  • your love of poppies is not surprising. i'll explain: since WW2, poppies have been used by the military/government as a symbol of those killed in wars and have become symbolic of a glorified image of death.

you obviously buy into the glorious "heroic" image of those killed in wars and so you see poppies as a way to express your inner fetish and love of death and war.

it's not the poppies you "love", it's the idea that they have come to represent: death and destruction.

  • Poppies grew in the fields where young soldiers were killed. People buy symbolic, imitation poppies out of respect for their sacrifice and to support their families.

But for the grace of God, it could have been you that had to fight and die. Get your nose out of the pretend battles you're addicted to - your beloved videogames - and try to get a grip on reality. I'm sure you can grasp it.

  • I don't know where you live, but here in Canada the poppies are used to represent our mourning the loss of soldiers' lives, and to raise funds for the soliders or their families (medical help, etc.).

  • REST IN PEACE HEROES

  • bloody awsome.......i felt his body beside me...i lay where he lay...god bless all.....we will remember..

  • I bought anthology of First World War Poetry last year and have found it to be the best poetry I've ever read. Just because the last three veterans from the Great War have died doesn't mean we should not forget their sacrifices and their sufferings back then.

  • lest we forget!

  • 'A generation who forgets their past are condemned to live it again.'

  • exactly!......where does that quote come from? oh and by the way. if your a reader? ive just finished a wonderful biography of a guy called "noel chavasse" a medic who is the only man of ww1 to have been awarded the vc twice. a very humbling read. all the best

    j

  • "Lest we forget" is from "Recessional" by Rudyard Kipling. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it," by by George Santyana, who also said, "Only the dead have seen the end of war."

  • "Isn't a noble purpose the only consolation for those whose loved ones are killed in battle?" thats beautiful.

  • religion is most often due to an accident of birth and second its all fairy stories. Christianity was created by the Romans getting its basis from a pagan sun god. They used region good / evil heaven / hell as a way of population control over a vast empire.

  • enochpowellwazRIGHT oh dear they make so much sense dont they, I mean its such a good thing to hate another human being because of a sheer random event like where they were born ?

  • There is a time and place for such arguments, and this is not it. I understand the need to respond to those who appear to you to be spouting rubbish, but this video is about reflection and remembrance. Please, have compassion for those who have lost loved ones and are grieving, because their grief is real, no matter the reason they lost someone.

  • really touching poem xxx I'm crying

  • Your right schools should stick to educating our children with facts how to read and write and do mathematics so they are able to form their own opinions and stop indoctrinating them with ideals.

  • It's amusing that you think schools should stick to teaching "reading and writing" but you yourself are obviously semi literate. The spelling is YOU'RE not YOUR and have you ever heard of punctuation? What is "your right schools"? Oh, you mean "you're right: schools......" You clearly don't know what a comma is so why should we listen to the rantings of a retard? And don't tell me you were "in a hurry!

  • You my friend are an idiot. You are right it is a poem about patriotism, but it also about camaraderie, friendship and loss. How can you say it is propaganda when written by a soldier who was exposed to the horrors of war, when you are sat in your warm chair, with your free and liberal thoughts that were protected by people like the man who wrote this poem.

  • Jambonjamasb I want to see this democracy / freedom you speak of we have 2 political parties whose fundamental policies are identical and where the lobbyists with the most money get what they want. Politics is a sham speaking a truth doesnt make you a liberal or a communist or a fascist its irrelevant who is in power because its a front the people with the most money get what they want. We in so called democracies only have the illusion of a choice.

  • And the poppies still grow in Flanders Fields

  • i remmeber in primary school i got selected to say this poem out, it was sad and even more so because i didnt really know what it was about but now it makes me sad :(

  • we watched this in my assembaly and it as quite sad ;(

  • thats good i liked it because you can think ov all the peaple that got blown, wondid, and shot.

  • It's OF not OV. Show some respect to our war heroes and spell correctly for God's sake. How can you possibly get a 2 letter word wrong???

  • We did this at school (well they read we lsitened) then a break this girl played that buglar...or sumin..you kno the thing they play at thr start ov 2 mins silence...and she was awesome!

  • PELOGS123 Quote (shut up) well according to your rational these men died so we could have free speech so why dont you have some respect for what they fought for (in your view)

  • We heard this earlier at assembly too, I'd give my heart out for the soldiers who fight for our country i was crying in assembly and my hot english teacher took me outside then i told him tht my dad was out there in afghanistan

  • we had to do 2 mns silence 2 day, very sad :(

  • What do you mean you had to? You should want to do this.

  • @Sterlingjob

Well, i did, its just that i already did it on sunday too .

Soz, didn't mean to offend nobody

  • we heard this in this years rememberance day asembly and I cried :(

  • Thankyou to all who fought for there country in the war. May you be blessed and forever in everyone's hearts. There will never be more braver men and women :) x

  • why does the usa not really commemorate this at 11:00 when britain does? it should span the world

  • im guessing because of the different timezones

  • the americans have veterans day, which is similar

  • beautiful...

...It's terrible and horrifying when you think of how many men died, but what's even worse is that they all fought because they were told it was 'the war to end all wars'... and then what happened 20 or so years later?...

  • Love this poem...we read it at school today

  • thats a beautiful poem

  • Bless those that fought for us all in both of the world wars.

    Forever in our debt.

  • This shows so little... yet so much.

  • ='(

Man, I'm crying because of all these chavs who waste their time and post nasty comments on a video like this! Thank you, SpokenVerse, for posting this.

    R.I.P.

  • R.I.P.

Thank you, guys, for winning the War for us. We are FREEEEEEEE!!

  • look who ever sayes the solders are crap there a big ball of sh**t cuz they fited for us and dont say the people are crap who rite poems becouse my dad wrote a poem and his famous you fu**res

  • Who's your dad?

  • Heart rendering, beautiful.

  • any1 who say this poem is crap or whatever is because they have no idea about poetry. In order to apreciate this poem you must read it and listen to it carefully, then you dickheads will understand why its writen as it is

  • My Headteacher read this to us today.

  • same :)

  • Does it matter if this poem sucks or not ? No

people clearly have no respect for those who fought for us and claimed their lives for us , we should be grateful and respect them! So r.i.p all who lost their lives

  • My school reads this every year..People keep saying this poem is crap but they forget that it wasn't actually written by a poet..

Anyway just thought id say that..

  • What makes a poet then?

This poem is lovely, some of the best poetry is written by people who have gone through experiences that we would not wish on our worst enemies, and many signed up as willing participents. - Thank you hardly seems enough.

  • Lest we forget them, RIP.

  • nice poem and the first time i have heard it in my whole life

    :)

  • really? the poet was an army medic and wrote it in a field hospital in Belgium, if im not mistaken :P

  • yes this is the first time i have heard it, i am 18 as well if you were wondering of my age.

  • Rest in peace in those who died :( and nice poem

  • That comment is really disrespectful! Today, all of Britain (I'm not sure about US) fell silent at 11:11 so we can respect those who lost their lives for us in the War. This poem is really touching and makes me cry to think all those men who fought and died for our freedom are being insulted by a dick like you. How would you like it if you died and someone wrote a poem about you to honour your name and I said it was crap? How dare you!!

  • You have no idea fool.

Learn the background, otherwise you wouldn't be here.

  • i mean not that im disrespectful i mean top top most respect to the men who fought and died in the war but when u have to go over this in english so many times u just feel like dying kinda takes away the meaning

  • mmm it is iconic but there are better ww1 poems agreed :D

  • god save all those catholics who died in the ulster division in world war one

  • I had to read this poem at school today

  • we had 2 sing that in school :'( nnd we watched this vidd what a teacher made nnd this lass was cryin bless herr :) (this isnt my profilee its ma brotherss) x

  • rip to past war vetrans but its a bit strange how are troops in afganistan are now fighting to protect the poppy feilds sorry stop immigration.

  • To all those who died, rest in peace.

To all those in the field, keep safe and come home.

  • you stupid chav, your so ignorant and stupid.

  • bless all of you soldiers who died for us

  • You Died For Us...

    You Kept Us Safe...
