Well that can be tricky stuff. I have scene several different ways of doing it but I know the best and proper way is to actually take a knife and cut the glass off the board where it it coming up and make sure it drys thoroughly. Then use resin to put the glass back on and put a big patch over the whole thing.
Another way is to drill a a small hole it through the glass to the foam and use a syringe to pump the resin in and get the glass to stick again.
i actually used kind of a pink resin and my board turned pink on the ding! so you have to be carefull with the resin that you buy! or else you will end up with a pink board, ahah
ive got a really small hairline crack on the side of my board and have used it a couple of times since getting the crack, does this make a difference and is it something i need to get fixed or will it not matter too much?
How bad does a ding have to be to be repaired. I have like 2 dings on my board that has like 1 hairline crack on each that looks like it's below the top layer of resin, but I'm not sure.
my nose on the board is split up the sides. and the tip of the nose is shattered about 15mm into the board. any ideas on how 2 fix. i got the repair kit. i know how 2 repair dings and that. but not sure if its the same way with the fiberglass been shattered or split.
i had 2 take some of the wood outa the nose about 15mm. can i replace that with the foam i got with kit?
Also clean the board with acetone so it clean whenever old, wax residue on the surface. It is ok to use plastic container(milk container and most clear drink bottle), just don't used styrofoams cup as that is same as EPS, it will melt through when use with polyester resin. Most newer board used EPS foam core so beware of it. Good job on the video.
just a quick note that you don't want to use polyester resin(the one on this video) on EPS board as first it will eat/melt the foam away and second ,it will not adhere to epoxy resin. always wear glove when deal with any resin as it will enter your body and do some nasty stuff to you.
hi ChelseaAnn. cool. thanks for the help.. but one question. do you have any good way to calculate the amount of catalyst? how many drops per quantity of resina. and what about wax agent? i have been told it helps to sand after.. non tacky finish. what do you think?
well catalyst usually had directions on the back that gives you an idea. I never really get exact with that. It depends how long i have to work with it and how fast I want it to dry. Wax is a good idea. You dont need it but it really helps with the sanding and gives it a nice look. Use it if you have it for sure. Saves you sand paper and time.
that really helped because i have a big ding in the side, the bottom, the top, and a couple on the bottom, my friend was stupid and tried to fill it in with wall putty!
yeah that works. You dont really need the filler for a small ding but when fixing a larger one you need to fill up the space with a thick resin like that so its stonger and it reduces airbubbles.
If you dont have filler you can always cut up the cloth into small little pieces and use that
Thanks for the vid! I just started surfing and I'm using my girlfriend's beautiful Dewey Weber. I ding it, I gotta fix it. I was intimidated because the book I got says to use a grinder to cut around the area. No way! This is a much kinder way for the size dings I have. Thanks again Crash.
ummm... ahaha not really. you need fiber glass cloth. You see, when you put the resin on the fiber glass the fiberglass cloth kinda melts and becomes one and the cloth becomes invisible. If you use just some plain cloth, the resin will just sit on top of it and then the whole patch will flake off
Yes those quick fixes are fine and handy, but when you have larger dings it is best to mix up the resin and catalyst yourself. When you mix up the two from scratch it takes a few hours to cure completely. If you have not fixed a board this way before it is best to practice on small dings before you try to repair the larger ones. After you mastered the skill, the quick fixes are recommended.
thats a hot ding repair vid ;) x

Lifesucksdie123 3 years ago

my dad has a fairly good way to fix larger dins say over 1cm and deep
he puts masking tape up right so it makes a pcet then he mixes some resin with a lil bit of resin to make this first mixture runny
he pours this in then when that has dried he then makes a stronger resing to make a top layer
he then leaves it to dry and uses his sanding tools to get the shape or rails right again

I use surfboard filler mixed with resin and fill a small ding with that. Then I use the top coat of resin to finish it off. Is that ok?
Patrickiscool69 4 years ago
