The best, one of the best! I have no idea why the people of my adopted country decided that he is less human than white people? Now I know, they envied him for his talent like they envied Ella or Louis Armstrong and many other geniuses who happened to be black.
@junkmail5417 The video/audio sync on this upload is slightly off, but Junkmail, all you have to do is sync your ear and eye a bit and you can see that he could never have recorded this prior and played it again identically. It just wasn't who Erroll was, either. He was a totally whimsical, spontaneous piano prodigy who excelled at exactly what you see here. One take.
@maddadram1 Erroll Garner was also the composer of this song, yet he could neither read nor write music. My channel is a tribute to over a century of pop music with over 800 playlists covering artists, genres & every year since 1900. And my hat's always off to the uploaaders who make it possible to hear all the fantastic music. This is on my Erroll Garner list & the 1954 playlist linked below. chuck
Beh,da rimanere a bocca aperta.Davvero grande Erroll Garner.Ultimamente lo sto apprezzando molto più di quanto è stato considerato nell'ambito della storia del jazz..
I can't quite get over the fact that he matches a jaw-dropping ability to play that piano like he has 4 hands with an amusing nonchalance in the way he keeps glancing around the room as though he's slightly bored with his off the scale level of talent! What a stunning musician.
I guess we all know just what an amazing an totally saisfying pianist this genius was, but all those sounds come straight from his heart and brain - never having 'studied' music.
@Syllerud I respect Bill Evans greatly. However, the other pianists I mentioned speak to me much more. I prefer the two-handed pianists who could play in a variety of ways...stride, block chords, concert piano influenced, etc. These folks could play solo piano and yet easily fit into a combo or ensemble.
Does anyone out there know if anybody was ever able to capture Errol's style in sheet music. I know he was never formally educated to music and that I'm probably s--- out of luck but if anyone knows, email me at tcmenninger@yahoo.com, and Much appreciated in advance. I could try to do it by ear, but that could take a life time and not sound anywhere near "the truth"... Thanks
Erroll wrote this while on a plane, when he looked out the window and saw a rainbow. It came to him while flying through the clouds, which is exactly what I feel like when I listen to the man with the "Left Hand From God" play. Thanks to my father for playing his Concert By the Sea album throughout my childhood. For me, there will never be a better-loved jazz record. I love how he involuntarily moans while he plays. He is pure inspiration.

I think he's not just a musician but also a hypnotist. Why? While watching this video I was totally mesmerized! Jaw dropped to boot! Wonderful artist. Thanks for this video.
you can tell when a musician is self taught...they never look at the keys....because they are playing with their heart and soul...and mr g is all that and more
I found this video a couple weeks ago, and I have now watched it more than Jimi Hendrix's performance of Fire at Woodstock, my former favorite video. This is simply one of the greatest musical performances I have ever seen. Those transitions are equally powerful and delicate. I am a visual artist, and I don't know where I would start to generate something of this imaginative power or right brain complexity. When I listen, I feel paradoxically inadequate and empowered. This is art.
@schmitmg1 There's another stunning Video performance by a Saxophone player by the name of Jimmy Forrest. The song is ( Body and Soul ) Make sure it's a live performance by the Count Basie band and he is introduced by Count Basie. His performance is just as stunning and brilliant as Errol's. Like Errol he is is one of the great unknowns. Trust me... When you see it , tell me who's performance is the best, I can't tell..
Errol Garner was way ahead of his time. Sure there were many great Jazz pianist in that era, but Garner was second to none. Just my two of course. His passion for the piano and the music was evident in every key and chord progressions that he executed. SUPERB, EXTRAORDINARY, EXCEPTIONAL, Etc, etc...
the soundtrack is behind the video, it makes it impossible to follow as the notes don't correspond to what you see... it's almost painful to watch how he manages to make it sound so easy, using his hands like two crab claws. AMAZING.
Jazz piano at its best! Reading music is for the immitative, improvisation is for the INNOVATIVE! I'll bet Erroll never played this piece the exact same way twice. The world would never know--or care!
Wow, he makes playing piano look so effortless. He just plays away and the music surrounds him like clouds in the sky surround the earth.Wonderful.Misty...
