It's been in my favorites almost two years and yet, every time I watch it, I have tears in my eyes and the pictures of Kazimierz bring some old memories. All these beautiful people in the old pictures should have lived long lives and had many offspring to enrich this world...but most of them are gone. My father lost an entire family while he survived in the German POW camp but just barely.
I'm 31 male from Poland and i know that the past will never come back. The pre war Poland was completely destroyed by Germans. Thats so sad. Those people who died during the second world war could do so much good for the world both polish and jewish nation. Someone did not like it.
Hitler will emerge from the hatred that surrounds him now as one of the most significant figures who ever lived... He had a mystery about him in the way that he lived and in the manner of his death that will live and grow after him. HE HAD IN HIM THE STUFF OF WHICH LEGENDS ARE MADE.
Jews and Germans today should be friends.. as Germany has taken great strides in improving relations with the Jewish people.. although there are some Jews out there who still have hatred of the Germans irregardless if they are a new generation or not.. But, I for one am not one of those.
Der Verlust jüdischer Kultur mit ihrer faszinierenden Mystik und ihren schönen Liedern ist ein großer Verlust für Deutschland. Was haben wir nun? Assitürken in Neukölln!!!
It is a shame that this very rich and beautiful language is literally dying out with each passing day. Nowhere in Europe is Yiddish spoken anymore as a first language. It is only preserved in a just few insular Hasidic communities in Brooklyn.
Looking at a Yiddish movie from Poland from 1936 , I can't help but see a civilization sings its swan song.
Yiddish is still spoken in Europe as a first language. It is the first language of many in the religious communities in England. Many Jews in Antwerp (Belgium) speak Yiddish as a first language. And as a second language it is spoken by many more Jews. I do though agree with you, Yiddish is no longer what it was, and if the movie you refer to is Yidl mitn fidl then I agree with you, it is a window into a world on the edge of destruction.
Hello.. I am a semi-native Yiddish speaker - semi meaning I am also learning it everyday.. My goal is to speak it as if I was one of those living in Eastern Europe at the time. It is by no means a dead or dying language.. and yes, it is a language so dear to me that it is also dear to half of the world's Jewish population as most of us have roots and or came from Eastern Europe.
I speak Yiddish... my parents wanted me to have this as my 1st language when I was a child.. I am originally from Ukraine, but a las.. I have forgotten a lot but I just got several books and am taking classes to help me with it.
ניין! א בראך צו די, וואס האט אומגעברענגט די יידישע קהילות! יידן נקמה!

MANDORLA after Paul Celan In mandorla , where Nothing reigns, What stands in mandorla? Two almond-shaped eyes, Royal blue. And in eyes, what stands in these eyes? A tear, a tear with dead shine inside. And this shine, what reflects this shine? The sky, the sky full of ashes and soot. Black, charred almonds, Empty, almond-shaped eyes What stands in mandorla? A royal tear, which it isn` t there
And the correct translation is in fact "spring song." I've seen versions in English that put it as "freedom song" but that's not the original title, although it's very much in the spirit of the song.
sorry - it's Frühlingslied (well i guess the yiddish vrsion is spelled something like friling.
But right before that there's a whole untranslated sentence anyway which goes something like "when the first springtime-tree is in blossom syng my song, sing my springtime son"
Could it be that the text is an English version instead of just a litteral translation (you know - really translating poetry is a pain in the you-know-what)
This brought so many memories of Poland and Krakow, my Jewish Community Center and my Jewish friends. It's all in the past now, only pictures remain and my wonderful memories of great times. It wasn't always so great for my family before I was born, they had to escape their town (on mother's side) and everybody on my father's side was murdered, my father survived in POW camp (he was in Polish Army in 39). Life throws us around the world like powns but we always try make the best of it.
what can I say nothing, I just look and listen as tears roll down this mans face I thank God I was not born in that time or was I, looking at there faces remind me of my family all gone to God not a Hoenig was spared nor a Valentin and all those other Jews not only Jews who lived in Berlin ,or Breslau you have your family memories different names and places ,I have a hole a void that will never be filled you see I WAS BORN IN 194I 2 DAYS BEFORE MY GREAT

Who did the translations? I really don't know Yiddish, but the translations are not accurate.
Anyway, what a pain in the heart these poems are; and what we have all lost!
