hola soy de Colombia///sabes hace poco fuy al yunk yard y compre un motor exactamente igual no tiene marcas ni nada es algo misterioso este motor pero mi pregunta es ¿tu sabes de cuantos HP es este motor?
Looks like shes working like a top... I would not muck with it....A little smoke is nothing to worry about... If it runs and pulls good I'd use it the way it is!!! check oil level periodically...We have one on a old grain auger and it is the smoothest running motor we have...burns oil like a s.o.b, and smokes like heck but I guess I'll run it till it dies....
@TheFarmerfitz The auger that it's on, is a 6" Versatile my Dad bought new in 1956 with the motor...we still use it...the pipe has holes worn through in a lot of places that we Duct tape up!!!
@TheFarmerfitz About the fuel seeping through the carb bowl?... Ours has sat outside since 1950, and it still is not doing that, so I think you're good.....
Can you tell me what type of carb is on that motor. its the same as the one on my snowblower, I have difficulity getting the upper half and the lower half of that car apart because of the diagonal brass tube. any tricks on how to get it down without damaging the tube. THANKS TONY G.
@NathansBackwoods Lol, it would be hard to part with it. I just don't know what I want to do with it. I'm thinking I just want to run a generator off it or something stationary.
The LA County Flood Control used to have a Hale portable fire pumps that had an engine just like that. It had swing out handles so a couple of guys could carry the pump. ale is still in business. haleproducts
I agree with oldhowlingHound, I have the same looking motor. I am using for a go-kart, it was a 1969 Hale 250gpm portable pump, Mine has the starter generator option, the starter still works but the generator regulator is shot and irreplaceble.. these motors would and could take a beating
@AGIII49: Well i'm jealous because that starter generator would be nice for this one. I still haven't decided what to do with it yet, I really want to see it put to good use. I'm thinking about making some kind of hauling wagon since I have a bunch of transaxles sitting around. But still kicking some cans around. I need to run it again real good, its been sitting forever!
i remember this briggs i worked on it was around a late 70's model the cylinder was so scoured to the point where i thought there was no way this thing would run....but i put it back together and it ran (with lots of blue smoke of course) these engines are amazing they run so well i even had a buddy get one to start without any piston rings
@elic1010 Briggs still had them awhile back ago. But they were very expensive, around $120ish for just the body. I don't remember what all it was but i'm pretty sure it was ONLY the body, nothing else. Mine will usually start in one pull, but I havn't ran it since this video. Think its time for another video!
hella good engine you got there. throw a .010 over piston in there and put it on somethin bro. let er eat. fire pumps had to be reliable and you see what they used. let the legacy live on with fresh insides lol
Thanks for all the comments guys! Sorry I havn't been checking in often due to some things going on. I finally got my beasty computer built and its doing good so I plan to start making some more video's soon. This engine hasn't been started in almost a year now so I need to pull it out and run her for a bit.
My bet is that it's a model 233431 which is a 9HP very heavy duty engine. The old 23 or 23D are older in styling. For a quick air filter you can get a Wix #42301 or NAPA 2301 and using a can as a top cover and some threaded rod, make up an air filter. You might get lucky and find old stock B&S parts somewhere.
I believe you are correct because when I got the engine it had a piece of tape on it that said 9hp. I need to find the rest of the air cleaner parts lol. My local small engine shop found a parts diagram and I have somewhere in my pile of papers so i'll have to find it. It was the only thing that they could come up with at the time.
My 6 horse has a carb like that. Bit small though. I was going to get new gaskets for mine cos it leaked like crazy. But I took it apart and cleaned it all and seemed fine after. That's interesting about the aluminium bowl.
Sure there's not a number behind the carb somewhere on the side of the shroud. Every briggs ever made has these numbers somewhere.
I'm also pretty sure the flywheels on those are so heavy you can actually take the idle screw right out and it'll still run.
I love these engines and they are also availiable in the UK as well, Apart from some british built engines I've heard, this one sertainly looks the part and sounds great to,
i have a 1954 1hp i used a sprite can for the gas tank and the throttle valve was missing so i just drooped a socket in the hole it runs fine but wit the socket in the hole it runs as a fixed throttle the governor cant adjust it to compensate for lost power but it has tons of torque
I'm pretty sure that's a model 23 briggs. I have one just like it. To find out the model number for sure take the head off and look under it for the number. These old briggs are the best.

are you sure the numbers arent stamped in the shroud . Maybe on the left side (while looking at the front) a little below the s on the side.

The model number is underneath the breather tube on the fan shroud
malibuclassic99 1 year ago
Yeah I've got one of these on an old generator set we use after hurricanes
down here. Same carb & muffler but mine's green. There's supposed to be
a tin can type air filter on top of that little open pipe. Mine starts on the 1st
or 2nd pull too because of the good choke it has on it. Its a Briggs 10HP.
Still has the original decals on it. Found the generator set on a junk
pile about 20 years ago & fixed the float in the carb. That's all it needed.
Sound would be nice-hold camera still!
