Absolutely love Tom Waits, but not everyone is going to feel the same. I'm glad in this case that a great song can be enjoyed by millions of people who just don't like/get Tom. Dunno why people have to get so precious about which version is better. Whichever version you like the best is the best one, to you, which is all that matters surely?

This is an embarressment.
Rod Stewart is a talentless poseur and a ponce, who has never written a decent song in his entire life. He shoudn't be allowed within a 1,000 miles of a Tom Waits song.
I don't think this is disgusting, but, I feel like Rod does not get the tone of longing/hopelessness/loneliness/etc. that Waits captures in both lyrics and vocal delivery. Tom's voice is not great, but he does pain very well. Rod is not making bad music, it is just at odds with the song as i know it.
His choreographed stage antics are flat out embarassing. He takes a soulful song and turns it into an overproduced farce. Give it up dude. Tom Waits is a legend, you are a soldout poser. I'm sure old Tom isn't going to give back the money he made from Rod doing this song, but I'd love to see him laugh while he watched this.
You are forgettin that Rod Steward PUBLISHED this "soulful song". In addition, while this is perhaps not my favorite performance of this song, this song and dozens of others have given my life and my soul sustance and meaning for over 30 years of good times and bad--including some REAL BAD times.
The song miss something.. and that is the sound of a lone wolf's cry towards the moon ;) Rod Stewart is a good singer. But this cover is so boring ...
I met this guy ince, in a railway cafe in Italy. Like me, he was there to see Scotland play at the Worldcup. I was very hung over and tired having slept in the station the night before. It was about 9am and he was having a coffee with his manager and girlfriend.
I was very hung over and in love with someone I had split with.
I think he does do a good job of this song, though I agree with the guy below that calls him a poseur
Gota agree with you Jim, this is fucking shit. Why does he do it, he's murdered some classic's. Rod can't you just stick to 'do you think i'm sexy' and 'sailing' and make us all happy
No I mean yeah Rod is an amazing singer but ...first Tom's not black and Rod may be an amazing singer for his type of music, but Tom's style fits perfectly with his hard bluesy voice, wich adds a lot to the soul of it. I just think you can't beat Tom's version
True, true...I take your point. Guess I'm just a stickler for songs in their original form. And there's plenty of covers out there that are actually an improvement on the original. For me, personally, this isn't one...but each to their own ;-)
A medicated and saccharine version of a classic originally by Waits. I doubt the sound quality helps, but this couldn't be any more removed from the original. But to be true, this should be judged on it's merits.
Rod, you may be good, and in the avoidance of upsetting his fans, I do like him, his voice, but this song should remain untounched, by anyone. Backing singers and faux Waits posturing (see the orginal video) do not echo the sentiment of the early version.
Lol @ Rod Stewart

Despite some pathetic attempts to imitate Tom Waits, Stewart yet again fails to get beneath the surface of the song he is singing. Awful. Just awful.

BRILLIANT song! BEAUTIFUL!!!
Pity that this broken-down narcissistic POSEUR Rod Stewart got hold of it, though.
I had to punch "pause" for the time that I write this, because I hate to hear a great song massacred.
Go watch / listen to the Tom waits original [Tom Waits - Downtown Train -1985] (at the moment, 3rd from top in "related videos" on the right).
